The Basics
Name: Miles Dewey Daugherty
Nicknames: His parents and siblings sometimes refer to him as Milo, but he doesn’t answer to it.
Age: 14
Orientation: Unsure/Asexual - Milo doesn't seek the kind of connections with others that would allow him to explore and figure out his orientation, nor does he have any motivation to start at the current time.
Desired Rank/Job: Student
Powers: Metal Manipulation – Miles has the ability to manipulate any metal that he touches. Although his power will be voluntary with training, at this point he tends to liquefy any metal that comes into contact with his bare skin. When this happens, Miles tends to freak out and is unable to return the metal to its original state. With training he will be able to control this better, but for now he’s just working on being able to touch metal without changing it.
Besides sending him into a meltdown, his ability causes him to feel physically tired and severe body aches, mostly in his extremities. Using his ability also leaves a raw spot on his skin where he came in contact with the metal. These rashes take about a day or two to heal. As Miles learns more control over his ability his side effects will become more severe in proportion to the amount of metal he’s manipulating and the time need to manipulate it.

General Appearance: For a 14 year old boy, Miles is actually pretty good at keeping himself clean and presentable for the most part. Miles wears his hair a bit on the shaggy side, mostly because he does not like to sit still long enough for a stranger to cut his hair. When he was younger he would allow his mother to cut it, but now that he’s at Hammel he tends to go longer in between trims. Miles doesn’t have a very expressive face and only really shows emotion when it’s extreme. He also does not make eye contact usually, unless he’s either repeatedly asked to do so or is comfortable with the person he’s interacting with.
Miles loves long sleeves and wears them as long as possible for most of the year. He chews on the end of his sleeves a lot. Doing this means that most of his shirts are tattered at the ends of his sleeves. Still he gets attached to his clothes so they have to get pretty tattered before he will willing throw them out. Miles is always seen carrying his backpack, which has seen better days but still works well.
When Miles walks, he tends to stay on his tip-toes and doesn’t move his arms along with his legs. This leads him to be a little uncoordinated, but not so much that he’s constantly tripping. He also tends to keeps both hands shoved deep in his pockets when they aren’t covered by his long sleeves when he’s rubbing the fabric on them. This is a habit he’s developed recently to avoid touching anything metal.
Personality: Miles likes thing to be structured and orderly. His days are often planned out down to the minute (either by himself or a tutor during school hours). He’s not much or spontaneity. Still, if he’s comfortable with someone and the location at the time, he will allow for a little change of pace from time to time. But big changes cause him a lot of anxiety and can lead to a meltdown.
Miles doesn’t really understand body language and facial expressions, but he’s reached a stage where he feels it’s important to understand others, even if he doesn’t understand why it’s important. So he often will outright ask someone how they are feeling if he is confused by what they’re saying or doing. And then follow up with why they feel that way. “Why” is becoming his new favorite word, even if he doesn’t understand a lot of the answers gets back from asking. Miles has no concept of sarcasm or most jokes that make use of metaphors. Similes he can handle. He’s hates telling lies, which is good because he’s horrible at telling them.
While Miles is getting better at calming himself when he needs to, there are still things that will send him into full meltdown mode. When this happens it’s best to stay out of his way since he has a habit of hitting, screaming, and then curling up into a ball until the feeling passes.
Miles is very quiet around those he doesn’t know, meaning he won’t say a word to a stranger. Even with those he knows he keeps his sentences short and to the point. He also prefers that in a conversation with another and does best with shorter requests.
Miles doesn’t make connections with others easily, but he does feel the need to help when he can. Of course his version of helping is to sit quietly by your side, not making eye contact, and if you’re lucky maybe a pat on the arm. But for Miles it’s a big thing to do that.

History
Miles was diagnosed with autism when he was two and a half after half a year of doctor visits, specialist visits, and testing. His father was slow to accept this diagnosis and was always finding some new specialist for a second opinion. In time though, he came to accept that his third child was different. And in time, he learned that maybe that wasn’t such the worst thing in the world. Miles mother, on the other hand, had noticed the differences, accepted, and embraced them when he was much younger. It helped that she had two other children to compare developmental milestones.
But while the Daugherty’s understand that Miles would need a different level of care and raising, it was important to them that Miles be treated just the same as their other children, or as close as possible. This means that when Miles started kindergarten he spent half of the day in a mainstream classroom and then the afternoon he received one-on-one tutoring. He was also on the soccer team for a few games until it became clear that he wasn’t interested or enjoying himself.
Although Miles never had trouble communicating with his family, he never spoke and instead relied on gestures and noises to get his point across. It wasn’t until he was in the second grade (he repeated kindergarten once) that he started speaking. Still he preferred to keep his words short and it took a long year before words became sentences. Even then he only talked to those in his family or people he interacted with on a daily basis.
When Miles was twelve, he went to open the door to the tutoring room and the doorknob seamed to melt and puddle into his hand. He immediately freaked out, screaming and trying to shake the metal off his hand. But it had hardened back and was now stuck around his palm. Unable to shake it off, Miles repeatedly slammed his hand against the wall hard enough to eventually break a finger. His father had to come to the school to calm him down enough to get him to the hospital. When Miles and his father arrived at the hospital, they were met by a recruiter from Hammel and a meta with metal related abilities who was able to remove the doorknob from his hand.
While the Daugherty’s lived in Vermont, it was decided that Miles would be safer living on the campus. It helped make the decision knowing that Miles’ sister was currently at Hammel. Still, the school staff allowed Miles to take the transitions slowly, meaning he spent a little time at the school each day with one parents or the other and then with only his sister close by before actually spending the night there.
For his first year at Hammel, Miles spent a lot of time playing shadow to his sister and was slow to open up to anyone. For a while, he even reverted back to his earlier non-verbal state. But slowly, as he becomes more comfortable with the staff he deals with on a regular basic, Miles returned to communicating in his short sentence ways. He still carries an AAC device with him for use but uses it off and on these days and it’s more for security.
