Bad Luck: Shows Up Ten Minutes Late With... Peanuts? (Addie)

Monroe had left Addie at his apartment, possibly to stop distracting her from working on an essay and possibly because he wanted coffee and he planned on bringing Addie back a hot tea. Mostly he just drank black coffee, but once in a while he went out to Starbucks or Velvet Tone to get a latte, because once in a while, espresso called his name. Like it was now.

He'd ordered and stood at the end of the counter, waiting for his drinks and he grabbed which ones the barista told him to, telling him that one was his latte and the other the tea. His order had never been wrong. He got the same thing everytime and they often knew who he was and what he ordered anyway. So he grabbed the two cups and went out to his car, just as another drink appeared up on the counter and a regretful barista realized that he'd taken not a latte--and rather a mocha, a turtle mocha.

He left them in his cup holders until he'd returned to the apartment, where he found Addie sprawled across the living room floor with her laptop.

It sucked. It absolutely sucked. When she woke up in the morning, Adaryn had a nonstop ringing in her ears that did not cease, and the fact that she had a very important essay due Monday wasn't doing anything to help the annoyance. So what better day to head over to Monroe and Eloise's apartment?

After all the nonsense that occurred with finding out that Monroe and Eloise were actually siblings, the amount of tension between the three ceased entirely, while between Monroe and Adaryn there was a blooming sensation that she had never felt before - one that could be considered uncomfortable if only because it was entirely new. Every time they were close, she felt a strange desire to be closer. So. very. close. But it only manifested itself at random times, which completely threw her off guard.

Either way, there was no reason to avoid him for it.

And so there she was, sitting on the couch in the twin's apartment (it was so weird to call them that), laptop sitting carefully on her lap when Monroe announced that he was going back to Starbucks to pick them up something to drink. He left with a parting kiss and she returned to reading the information on the screen, trying to focus on the words but failing miserably due to the ringing in her ears.

To make matters worse, just as she was going to save her final draft, suddenly her computer fan started growing louder and louder until the screen went blue and Adaryn just sat there and stared, the annoying ringing in her ears ruining the silence that she wished she had for just. a. single. freaking. moment.

With a frustrated sigh, Adaryn carefully placed the blue screened laptop on the coffee table and slowly inched off the couch, sitting down on the floor before just lying flat on her back, hands tucked against her midsection and her eyes to the ceiling.

She sat there for a good twenty five minutes before Monroe returned, and when he did, she didn't even look to the side.

"My life," Adaryn said, her tone monotone and bored, "Sucks."

"Addie, what are you doing?" Monroe asked, upon seeing how she was laying, still, hands folded over her middle, like a corpse. Monroe knew it was a gruesome way of looking at it, but Adaryn had a habit of laying like that, sleeping like that even. So still. He joked with her about it sometimes, especially considering the way he slept...

He set the two drinks down on the coffee table and kicked slightly at her foot with his own. She'd told him about the ringing in her head. She'd had a headache and he'd tried to soothe her as she knew she had a big paper to write, so he'd also offered to go get her a warm drink and just be there for her. After all, Monroe wasn't the biggest on 'doing stuff', which meant he was fine with lazing around while his girlfriend wrote a paper, flipping through tv channels, playing with her hair, sketching, drinking coffee by the pot.

"What the world is making me do." Adaryn responded, tilting her head back to glance at him before he set down the coffee on the table. She always slept incredibly still unless in a nightmare, but there were a few times where Monroe commented on the fact a few times after she woke up. It wasn't purposeful, truly, but she was still learning how to comfortably sleep beside another individual, and apparently that carried over.

"Hey, stop it," Addie whined quietly, kicking back at him when he nudged her foot. At the current point in time, she was trying her hardest to will the ringing away, and it was completely failing. On one hand, she was grateful for the return of company, but at the same time, she also found it to be a bit irritating, if only because the added noise wasn't doing much to soothe the pain.

"My computer crashed and my head is killing me - Today is not turning out to be a good day." It was then that she sat up, only to reach for the cup set down on the coffee table. She took a sip - Earl Grey, just like she wanted. It was almost comforting that he didn't have to ask what she wanted, and instead just knew. "Thanks. I needed this."

"What did you get this time?"

"What do you mean?" Monroe asked, immediately needing her to reword it. "What's the world making you do?"

"Sorry, had to." But at least it got her to sit up. His facial expression changed almost immediately at what she divulged. "Man, sounds like a shitty day." He didn't really know what else to say. It happened. Computers liked to crash. At the worst possible times. Like when you were looking at mugs on Amazon or watching Youtube videos of cats. "You should email your teacher. Explain the situation. They'll probably understand." At least, he hoped so. It really depended on the teacher.

He smiled as she took her tea. "You're welcome. Figured you could use it...you know, even if it's tea and not the nectar of the gods." Meaning, coffee.

"A latte. With two extra shots of espresso," he told her, sheepishly, picking his own drink up off of the table. He'd dropped his keys on the coffee table and taken off his coat so now he could enjoy his coffee.

"It's making me lie on my back and contemplate why the heck school even exists if only to torture me." Adaryn looked up at him then, her lips turning down into a pout as she stared up at his towering figure. "Or maybe it's making me ask myself why the world doesn't like me today. I don't litter."

Because littering dictated luck, obviously.

Out of all seriousness, though, the girl really didn't understand why it was that she was having the worst luck on that day. With everything that had been going on, she had been feeling pretty good. Monroe and Eloise drama was only as far as arguing about his combat boots occasionally. No longer did she have to worry about the two living together. In fact, it was really convenient. Two really good friends in the same area? One could be home and the other couldn't, and Addie would still be content with coming over.

"Your definition of 'nectar of the gods' is different from mine." But she was up, and he was grabbing his coffee. However, she reached out for him, setting her tea back down on the coffee table. Because she wouldn't actively say it, but he should most definitely know what she requested just by that simple action. Addie wanted a kiss, but she was always still too "Addie" to initiate it. Normally.

"Well, school is pretty torturous," Monroe agreed, although unlike him, Adaryn was much more committed to her school work. He made a funny face at what she said next. "I'm sure not littering is not the only thing that determines if your computer crashes or not." What she said was utterly ridiculous and it made him laugh, although he did feel bad for the unfortunate circumstances.

"That's because mine is the right definition," he told her as she reached out for him and he lightly tapped her nose with his finger before grinning and leaning in to kiss her, his cup of coffee still in the other hand. It wasn't that he'd known she wanted a kiss, but rather that it just seemed natural to do at the moment. "I'm sorry you don't feel well," he continued. "Maybe you should lie down after your tea. Relax before you deal with your paper again."

He took a sip of his coffee and immediately knew that it wasn't what he'd ordered. He was incredibly used to the comforting taste of a latte accompanied with lots of extra espresso. But this was actually rather sweet, and chocolaty. He made a face.

"You're telling me," Adaryn was, in part, incredibly anal about completing her work after all the struggle she had in her sophomore and junior years. It was hard, most definitely, with the isolation that she was put through by work of herself, and then the hell that ensued last year with the uncertainty of Monroe, and her parents literally disowning her.

She still hasn't showed the scar to Monroe.

Adaryn tried not to think about it by shoving it to the back of her mind, pulling at anything that could be used to elevate her what was left of her mood rather than destroy it, and focused on Monroe in front of her. His words caused her lips to quirk upward and her arm slipped to around his waist when he kissed her. Adaryn was well aware that Monroe still held his coffee in his hand (she didn't expect anything less, really) but she figured she was small enough to not be a hindrance.

It didn't take long for him to take a sip, and when he did, a look of disgust clouded his features. She pulled back and raised a brow, "What's wrong with your coffee?" Did they get it wrong?

"You're trying your best though and it's not your fault your laptop crapped out," Monroe told her. "There's gotta be a technopath on campus who can fix it with his mind, right?" He was trying to lighten the mood with something funny but also true. That was one good thing about a meta school, he supposed. You could always find someone to solve some sort of problem. Like he'd found Candence when he needed some sleep.

After pulling back from Addie to enjoy his latte, he'd realized it wasn't a latte. "It's not what I ordered," he said plainly. Normally it wouldn't be such a big deal. Mostly because coffee was coffee and while this was really sweet, it would still give him the kick in the butt he needed, but he swore there was something crunchy on top. He removed the lid from the drink in haste and stared at his drink, which had snickers pieces resting on top of the whipped cream. Nuts. "Addie," he began, trying not to panic. "I don't know if I've told you this, but I suppose now is as good of a time as any. I'm allergic to nuts." And surely as soon as he'd realized what he'd been drinking, he started to feel himself breaking out in a cold sweat. "This drink has nuts in it."

"If you find one, you tell me." While she was annoyed and hurting, Adaryn attempted to keep that bitterness out of her tone. For the most part it worked, but she also thanked that on her empathy as well. After all, there were some things that Empathetic Manipulation was good for.

Normally, it wasn't as though they had gotten his order wrong. His cool tone made her simply shrug off the oddity of it all, especially considering the fact that Adaryn knew full well that he would drink almost anything. That is, until he made his incredibly important announcement. It didn't register immediately, as was to be expected when that type of information was bombed onto the girl.

He didn't have to hide the panic in his voice because she could feel it.

"What?!" She took a step back, not really sure how to take the information being given to her. "You're allergic to nuts and you tell me this now?"

"Will do," Monroe told her, although he wasn't sure he knew of one... But he certainly would track down one for Adaryn if it would dissolve her stress.

"I don't know, it never came up! I guess..." Mostly he'd just forgotten about it, besides writing it on medical forms. The first time he'd ever had nuts it'd been brutal, and the first and only time he'd had them. He'd been young and looking for a snack to eat in the kitchen and things had went awry quickly, resulting in his mother rushing him to the ER in tears. He hadn't planned on eating nuts again and it seemed that it was just...bad luck.

As the cold sweat worsened, he set the cup down on the table, a bit of liquid sloshing out. He felt dizzy and nauseous all at once and he knew this was going to get bad. "I'm pretty allergic," he mustered, feeling his voice become hoarser. "Call 911. You need to call 911."

To Adaryn, the panic was enough to cause a struggle in her actions. On one hand, she wondered if it would be a waste of time to call 911 because lord knew how long it took for an ambulance to get to a location. Or at least, that was her own experience - one that she’d rather not relive.

But she could tell immediately from the way his stance changed and his voice grew hoarse that her boyfriend was in some definite trouble. Her hand reached into her pocket and Adaryn dialed 911 immediately.

“My boyfriend is severely allergic to something in his coffee - we need an ambulance, like now!”
