[/blockquote][/size]Year 2000, Dani's childhood home.
Dani was being cranky and troublesome, not wanting to have her nap at all if she can help it, and was staring at the wall and waiting for Matty to get home. She was intent on staying awake no matter what happened. Matty was her big brother now, he had been for a week, and she was intent on being right there, on the couch in the living room, when he got back from his doctor's appointment, so she could hug him and babble at him about her few hours without him around. Daddy had the day off, so he was watching Dani, trying to get her to eat her carrots and sleep at naptime, even though she insisted that naptime is for babies and she's a big girl now.
She stared, narrow-eyed, at the door, little arms crossed, trying to make sure that the instant Matty came in that door, she would see him and be there before anyone else could do anything. Her eyes closed and her head nodded forward a couple of times, but she was sure she was going to stay awake until Matty was there. Just to make sure she wasn't too comfy, she slid off of the couch, her pink shirt lifting up when it caught on the edge of the couch, letting the upholstery scrape against her bare tummy. She rubbed at the red spot left behind, but it wasn't going to last--it wasn't even half as bad as the place she had scraped her elbow on one of the few places in the house with hard-wood flooring. Dani sat on the floor, watching the door still, and waited.
And waited.
And then, next thing she knew, she was hearing the door open and her eyes were snapping open, and she sat up from where she was sleeping on the floor--she insisted she knew everything that was happening, and was laying there on purpose, wide awake--and jumped up, running to Matt and throwing her arms around him, her black hair sticking up in every direction, framing her sweetly-smiling face. "Matty, Matty, I missed you sososososoooo much! How's the doctor's 'pointment go? Didja have to get shots? I want ice cream, Mama can Matty and I get ice cream?" She was firing questions off rapidly, not allowing anyone the time to answer, and then she was running off, picking up her bear and running back to Matt so that Roosevelt could be involved in the conversation.
Roosevelt loved Matt almost as much as Dani, after all. Although he agreed with her, his not-talking-ness could be very annoying sometimes.
