You must be my Ward [Ginny]

Despite the fact it was only 2 in the afternoon and Gin probably had lessons, Jem waved this fact away and decided she could no longer hold herself in and needed to squeal loudly at her close friend about serious excitement.

When the phone was picked up, instead of her normal scientific fact of the day, the younger blonde practically spewed out everything in her head at once, leading to a starting sentence of:

"GINNNYYYYY. Okay there's a superhero club suddenly opened at school by someone and I want to go and you should too even though you don't have a meta human power but you can baffle them with science and not every superhero has a magical power. I mean look at Batman, he's just some rich dude with gadgets and we can gadget you up so you can be Genetica's ward!"

Breathe.

"Genetica is my superhero name, I decided it already. Anyway. Ahem. Superhero Club, you game? I'm even going to get a proper outfit. Or bully Isaac into making a proper outfit. Spencer wont come!" She pouted down the phone.

"So Hi. How are you?"

It was cold, too cold to be outside, which was why as soon as class had let out Ginny had rushed back to her dorm, wrapping her arms around herself in an effort to keep heat inside her thick pea coat. Even with gloves and coat and scarf and hat she felt chilly, and so when her phone began to ring insistently before she'd even made it up the steps to her dorm she was inclined to ignore it.

But then she thought that it could be her dad, or her step-dad, or even her mother, and she fumbled in her pockets for the phone, not bothering to check the caller ID before flipping it open and holding it to her ear, pushing her hat up slightly so she could hear.

Before she could even say hello there was an excited rush of words, almost too much for her to make out.

She got superhero club, and Batman and science. And also baffling, which this certainly was. Then there was a pause, but not long enough for her to get a word in edge wise, and she listened in amusement to talk of bullying Isaac and Spencer's refusal to join in.

"Oh, hey, Jem, nice to hear from you, too," She grinned into the phone. "Yeah, that sounds pretty sweet, I'll totally come if they have meetings while I'm up your way. You know who's starting it? And Spencer'll come around once she sees how cool we all are. Maybe we can get Isaac to make her something pretty and lacy for a costume, think that would inspire her? Tell her it'll impress whatsisface she likes so much?"

Jem now had a slight wheeze in her voice from practically turning asthmatic in her desire to tell Ginny what she'd found out. She was hopping from one foot to the other in her bedroom while the bunnies shuffled around twitching their noses. Dragging the paper out her bag, she sat crosslegged and wrinkled her nose.

"Doesn't say who, just says when and where." She explained, tapping the paper. "We must get you some awesome superhero gadgets already. I was reading a science blog and there's a gun invented that takes a small sample of skin and replicates it, so it's like a SKIN gun to heal people. We must get you one then you can be all POW SKIN." Another huge breath, and she scooped Dita and Sega onto her bed.

"Spence says she's not Super enough to be a superhero, which is bs." She rolled her eyes. "But Dani's going. And Robbie. Dunno who else yet. But I'll see if I can bribe her with Sammy." She paused to scoop the tiny bunny up and kiss her little nose. "Sega says hello!" Jem curled onto her side.

"Anyway, scientific fact of the day! Did you know the y chromosome is slowly losing more and more of it's genes? It's also the highest mutating chromosome because it's in the sperm and sperm cell divide." She winked, then realised there was nothing to wink at, aside from Dita, who's nose twitched.

"So how's life treating you, and what super name are you gonna give yourself?"

"Oh, whatevs, Spence could be super!" Ginny snorted, watching the puff of air that formed before her. Deciding that it was finally time to go inside she stomped up the stairs, pushing the door open with her elbow.

"Skin gun, nice. And how much do those cost again?" That didn't sound like something she would be able to afford herself, nor even the sort of thing that would be widely available at, say, the CVS or Wal-Mart. In fact, she would probably have to sneak into a medical lab and steal one if she really wanted one that badly, and for props for a superhero LARP the risk didn't seem worth it.

"Dani's cool." She agreed; she'd met the younger girl a couple of times, first at the Harry Potter premiere where they'd surrounded Isaac, and then again at Jem's geek club meeting. She definitely seemed like the sort of person Ginny liked, funny and enthusiastic. Robbie....she might have liked better if he hadn't tried to hit on her the first time they'd met.

"So if Robbie's going does that mean Estelle'll be there, too?"

If Jem didn't know then she would ask the other Tolkienite next time they talked on IM.

"Max? Aki? Luce?" She probed, edging away from the door as another student swung in behind her, letting in a blast of cold air.

"I know, I think she's entirely amazing." Jem complained, rolling her eyes and listening to Ginny walking around the campus. "I can always pop up and visit you, I have nothing to do for Thursday, I have an entirely free day because I got ahead in science. By a lot." By reading the entire biology book cover to cover and writing a ton of notes. Not to mention doing all her english too. Talk about a swot.

"And I'm doing okay in training. Hey, is there a zoo near you? I need new DNA specimen jars." She explained, bending down to grab a box of nail polishes under her bed and rooting through them for the best colour for her toes. "And I'm sure I can get a grant from the school for superhero weapons, right? But in all seriousness, we can get you a boomerang or a jetpack or something else that makes you badass."

Deciding on a bright cheerful banana yellow, Jem transfered her phone to her shoulder and ear, and began painting her toes, tongue sticking out the corner of her mouth. "I dunno, there's no official member list, I've just been bothering the hell out of everyone I know to come and join in." She huffed. "Someone's bound to ruin it for everyone else though, no offence but I bet Mia's going to try and cause a riot." Another eye roll.

"I can ask Max... I really dunno who's going though, it's a mystery." She made an eerie noise. "HEY! Your dad is nerdy, right? Why don't we ask him to help us make gadgets?"

"Uhh, there's an aquarium, that close enough to a zoo for you?" Actually, that might be a fun day trip to make with Jem; they both enjoyed science and she shamefully hadn't bothered to visit it yet herself. A visit from a friend was always an excellent excuse. "They call it, like, a lake aquarium and science center or something, but whatever, it has fish, fish are specimen."

She continued edging away from the door until she could no longer feel the icy blasts as student passed in and out before leaning up against the wall. "Jetpacks are pretty cool." And then, "Hey now! Mia's not that bad." She protested, jerking forward involuntarily. "Doubt she'd wanna be part of a superhero team, anyway, she doesn't like to rely on other people that much."

There was a momentary pause before she admitted, "And she likes to think she can do it better. She might wanna be our rival, but she wouldn't start a riot, and rivals aren't so bad, they keep you on your game."

She pushed her hat up further, nudging her phone up with her shoulder. "Right, well, I guess we'll find out when we....whaaaaaat? My dad?" She burst into laughter, "I don't know if painting miniatures translates into making gadgets but I'll mention it to him."

"That's good enough I guess..." Jem mused, looking at Sega as she hopped gleefully over Dita. "There's gonna be some good sea plants, and I could always use some new underwater animals, but I do need some land animals too, I can't fight crime in the water all the tim." She laughed, but made a mental note to head over there with her little jars for skin samples and other DNA packed items.

She did grin a bit when Ginny defended Mia - she knew she would. "Yeah, yeah. Sure she's not." The girl didn't sound that convinced, but then, she'd been around for the talk fallout and couldn't really forget it that easily. "As long as this rivalry doesn't involve posting pictures of me in my birthday suit across the school computers." She grizzled, before booting up her laptop to find a good website to find superhero gadgets.

"There's this new fabric called d3o, which apparently is mega flexible normally, but if impacted it goes rock solid." She said, scratching her chin. "You totally need a weapon though, something that isn't a gun, guns are just lame. How about a staff? Or a modified taser. God I haven't tinkered with something to make it better for years... not since the laser-pointer catastrophe aged 12."

Now she just needed to source some things and... "Oh your dad is totally the type to tinker, I reckon. If we just show him a blueprint of a lightning-style electricity shooter then we can grab some bits and pieces..." She chewed her lip. "Anyway, I'm getting ahead of myself. See you on Thursday with your superhero name, yeah?" She asked, enthused.

"Dita and Sega send bunny kisses!"
