[Continued from Flowers and Cards: Mama's Here, the phone conversation between Elaine and Cobalt.]

Elaine scrolled through her list of contacts until she found the one she was looking for. Had she been able to work the speed dial, she might have moved this one up, but for now it was good enough that she had a cell phone.

The phone rang only a few times before a gruff voice responded.

"Cobalt?" Elaine said with a quivering voice. "I'm at the hospital. Don't freak out, please. It's not me. But Morgan's been hurt."

She nervously played with the strap of her purse with her free hand while she looked around the hospital.

"It looks pretty bad, but he's awake. That's more than some of the others. A lot of the Hammel staff seem to have been involved here." She bit her lip. The whole ER looked busy.

"I don't know what happened. I don't even know how long Morgan will be here. No one's telling me anything. I just...I thought you would want to know."

Cobalt had been reading when Elaine called. Finally getting Josh calm enough and rational enough to go home and not run after Sean, Cobalt had opted to de-stress a little by reading something mindless. He was in the middle of the book when the phone rang. He jumped a little, blinked and pushed himself up to grab the phone from its bed across the room.

“Hello?” He asked, distracted as he pulled out a folder out of the pile. “Oh, hey El—” He was cut off by her wavering voice on the other line saying things like hospital and Morgan’s been hurt. His breath stopped in his throat and he was on his feet before he even realized it, but he forced himself to calm down. He couldn’t go running over there because he didn’t know anything yet. And he didn’t want to upset Elaine or Morgan.

“The Hammel staff…?” Cobalt shook his head, deciding he didn’t actually care all that much about what the Hammel staff was doing. “Is Morgan okay? What’s wrong with him?” He couldn’t keep the fear out of his voice. Not when his mind played little images of Morgan when he was younger, and how small he’d been, how trusting he always was. Cobalt’s grip tightened on the phone. Please let him be okay.

"Morgan is conscious and talking to me. But there's something wrong with his eyes--they've bandaged the whole top part of his head. And he's very tired and weak...I don't think even the doctors know everything that is going on." Elaine took a deep breath as she tried to steady herself. Before she could do anything else she had to figure out what exactly the situation was and what was called for.

"I'm still talking to Morgan, but he just seems very tired. And with everything so busy and no one sure of what's going on, I think it's best if we keep the chaos to a minimum. I called you because you're family and I thought you should know about this. But I think maybe we should wait a while until everything is sorted out before we have a lot of visitors. I'm staying here for now, at least until they decide where to place him. Tomorrow do you want to come up?" She almost suggested him bringing some cookies or something decent to eat, then she remembered who she was talking to.

"I know this is probably a lot to dump on you right now. I'm sorry for making you deal with all of this...I just don't know who else to talk to right now." She bit her lip, anxious over a medley of problems, not the least of which was her fear for her son.

"I should probably go. Morgan's falling asleep, and I need to talk to some of the doctors to see what all needs to be done. I'll talk to you soon, all right?"
