Sage couldn’t remember the last time he had winded down and practiced his archery. It had been a while, and he truly felt at ease when his fingertips touched the bow again. Nothing made him feel calmer and more in tune with his surroundings, and each time his fingers pulled the string, it was as if everything was gone. Nothing could pull him from that moment, or so he thought…
An arrow whooshed through the air, but it was not his own, and it struck just an inch or so off from the very center circle. Emerald eyes turned to see who had made the shot, and he was most certainly surprised to see his cousin, Thyme, standing with a triumphant smirk.
“Nailed it”
Sage smiled, moving over to him with curiosity.
“Ty? When do you learn how to do that?”
Thyme grinned again and turned his back as if it had been something small that required no effort at all.
“I have my ways”
Sage clapped in appreciation regardless of his cousin’s cockiness before he turned to fire his own arrow, hitting dead center and leaving Ty gaping in awe at how easy the boy had made it look, though he did not want any praise.
“It’s not about hitting the center, Ty…it’s about concentration; consistency. Enough practice, and of course you will hit the center…but can you do it several more times without once losing focus?”
Thyme groaned and picked up his arrow again, firing a second time, but this time around, the arrow landed farther away from the center, much to the boy’s dismay.
“Concentrate”
Sage reiterated, and his younger cousin rolled his eyes.
“Sorry if I got distracted. When bacon pops up in your mind, you don’t just say no”
The emerald eyed boy laughed before Thyme brought up the real reason he had come into the room.
“Eighteen today, huh?”
Eighteen. It was hard to believe that today, Sage officially became an adult. However, to him it was like any other birthday. Sure, he liked celebrating and being with his family, but all the attention made him feel awkward every year.
“Hmm…I guess so”
He responded to Ty, his words showing little interest. His cousin did not appear to like this answer, and he grabbed Sage by the back of his collar, dragging him away from the targets.
“W-what are you doing? Where are you taking me?”
Thyme smirked and continued to pull him along, grip tightening a bit more before he spoke.
“Away. We’re celebrating properly. You’re not gonna hide in here all day and just shoot arrows”
“I wasn’t hiding in here! And celebrate how?!”
Thyme shrugged.
“How should I know? We’ll get some people, put our heads together, and make it happen”
Sage sighed and had a feeling that this was going to turn into a big mess. Well, at least his birthday wouldn’t be boring, right?
