Is there a doctor in the house? (Declan)

Being a janitor had its occupational hazards. Levente was used to mistaking his thumb for a nail and whacking it with the hammer. Or tripping over various mops and brooms. But most days he was pretty good at surviving with only a few minor scraps and bumps. Today was not one of those days.

Although he was actually having one of his ‘up’ days, it seemed that gravity was not in the same mood. From the moment Levente had stepped out of bed, he had tripped over every little crack and bump he came in contact with. Not that it had damped his mood any. But it was a little annoying.

He was mopping one of the main hallways when he somehow managed to trip over his own mop. He tried to catch himself, but slipped on the wet floor and bashed his head on the corner of his bucket. Like the other times he had fallen today, he just pulled himself up and wiped himself off, ready to continue with his work. Until he noticed his head felt rather wet. Raising his hand to his forehead, he realized he was bleeding. Normally, he wouldn’t have bothered to check it out. But he was close to the infirmary already. And even though he couldn’t see the wound, it seemed to be a lot of blood for just a scratch.

So, pulling his mop and bucket along with him, Levente walked into the infirmary and looked around for the doctor. “Hello?” he called. “I think I might need a little help here.”

The day was more or less like any other for Declan Marst. It was nothing special and he once again found himself caught in the wake of the monotonous life that he had up and created for himself on a whim. And what a stupid whim that had been, but he was not about to leave. He felt like this job was almost difficult. Not difficult in the diagnosis he must do but difficult on the scale of ‘dear lord how can I possibly survive out here in the wilderness’. He had done it once before? How was he struggling this much now? How could he, as a teenager handle what he, as an adult, could not even fathom at this point.

Perhaps it was just a whole different attitude in a sense. He had not been the man he was now back then, he had something to prove back then. Now he had nothing to prove, he just had to make sure everyone else recognized that. It was going well so far, given that his main group of patients were a bunch of teenagers. Who did teenagers listen to? No one.

Declan sat in his office, bored by the slow day, but as soon as he thought that he half cursed at himself. Now he’d get flocked my teenage girls who had *eh eh* such a bad cough, or the boys who fell off their skateboards trying to show off and grind a rail. That was what he had been thinking until a man did walk into his office.

Declan opened the door when he heard the voice and stared for a moment at the man. It was the… Janitor? He hadn’t been expecting that one. Well he was bleeding from the head and that needs fixing. “Yes, of course, come in.” His voice had softened considerably, as he didn’t feel like he needed to give any lectures, though his eyes remained hard.

“Now, can you tell me what happened?” As he asked the question he washed his hands and pulled on a pair of gloves.

On any other day, Levente would have felt extremely embarrassed about his predicament. But today he was having a great day, aside from the whole battle against gravity thing. So when the doctor asked him to explain what at happened, Levente started to laugh. He probably looked a little like a lunatic, with his head bleeding and laughing like an idiot.

“I got into a fight with my mop and lost. Dangerous line of work and all,” he smiled. He wasn’t too tired of dealing with the students all the time and bothered by Levente’s child-like mood today.

Levente watched the other man pull on his gloves and inwardly winced a little. “You don’t think I’ll need stitches do you?” Although he wasn’t scared of needles or anything, they were things he looked forward to either.

Declan opened a file and got ready to write what he was told, but the first words out of the man’s mouth shacked him a little. He looked up and blinked a few times. Got in a fight with a mop and lost? Maybe he just wasn’t expecting someone who was there bleeding in front of him to joke. He should probably take a good look at the man’s head injury, clearly.

Declan jotted down a few notes and then stood and pulled on his gloves. He first cleaned off the wound to find that it wasn’t actually one big gash, but a series of smaller gashes. Well that was sort of a good thing, the chance that they would heal up without scarring were pretty high, not that this was particularly a concern of the man in front of him.

“Well it looks like I can just use liquid stitches for these. That means no needles if you’d prefer that. I think that is the best course of action, and then we’ll need to talk about your head. I want to make sure that you do not have a concussion.”

Levente tried to stay still as Declan cleaned around his wound. But it wasn’t the easiest thing in the world. As a kid, Levente had been the type to wiggle and squirm when he’s parents tried to remove a splinter. As an adult, he still wasn’t comfortable with the situation. Still he didn’t want to purposely upset the doctor.

“No needles sounds just fine to me,” Levente said with a grin. He flinched a little as Declan hit a particularly tender spot on his head. “Ouch, man easy there.”

“Um…talk?” Levente asked, a waver of concern in his voice. Levente was never comfortable with talking with doctors. Even if it was only to access a head injury. “I…uh…don’t think there’s a real need for that, right?” Sure, he was a little dizzy. And his head felt like he’d dropped an anvil on it. But other than that he felt normal. Well, at least normal by his standards. “I’ll be fine, just fix up this cut and I’ll get back to work, okay?” He was considering leaving before Declan even finished.
