The Basics
Name: Esme Fatima Bakus
Nicknames: Ursula, Octogirl, Tentaculina, Tentacula, Tentacruel…all manner of Octopus related puns. Her family all call her Baby Girl
Age: 37 (Birthday: October 30)
Orientation: Heterosexual and very comfortable
Desired Rank/Job: Hammel Researcher
Powers: Shapeshifter- Esme is able to shift into a select few Octopods of the Octopodinae Subfamily. Those four forms being Wunderpus photogenicus the Wonderpus, Thaumoctopus mimicus, the Mimic Octopus, Octopus vulgaris, the Common Octopus and Enteroctopus dofleini, the North pacific giant octopus
Esme’s experiences momentary blindness when shifting to and from any Octopus, as the construction of the eye balls is so different. Splitting migraines also are common when shifting back to her human form. Esme has to be very careful when shifting, as she is susceptible to the bends (pressure sickness from adjusting to water pressure) and cannot stay in shifted form for longer than two hours.

The Details
Hair Color: Black, thought sometimes dyed silly colors if she’s feeling goofy. She’s got quite the collection of those clippy-in high lights.
Eye Color: Light Brown
Any Piercings? Ears
Any Tattoos? None
Any Scars? None to speak of
General Appearance: Esme is the text book definition of a bombshell. Her petite stature (approximately Five feet three inches, depending on how big her hair is that day) doesn’t help to mitigate her ample curves. She has to work fairly hard to make sure it’s her face that men are seeing first, but she does try rather hard. When they do find her face, it’s a rather exotic sight. Esme has multicultural origins from both parents, with large almond shaped eyes and a wide mouth in a triangular face.
At work she dresses modestly and to her body type; professional slacks and button downs, with the occasional blazer to set it all off. During leisure, she opts for something a little more exciting. She loves pink and has an entire section of her closet dedicated to pink dresses and matching shoes
She usually wears her dark hair straight, but isn’t above a sensual curl here and there. While lounging at home, she loves to don some sweats and her huge pink bunny slippers.
Personality: Born into a family of loud mouths, Esme picked up on the bad habit. She used to struggling for the spotlight and sometimes finds herself doing so even when it isn’t necessary. She strives to make people like her by being enthusiastic, extroverted, and up-to-date on pop culture.
Unfortunately, Esme isn’t really any of those things except enthusiastic. She’s really just a huge geek who wants to have some friends. Its endearing in a way, and most people view her as the overzealous little-sister type. Eager…but just a little off. Her idea of an awesome night is holing herself up in her living room and watching the discovery channel.
While she doesn’t come off awkward at all, Esme does have a small measure of social ineptitude, particularly when it comes to romantic situations. Women of science aren’t particularly common in Missouri and so Esme is used to socializing with men who are themselves socially stunted (marine biologists are a rather strange little bunch). She tries to keep up with things that she thinks the average person likes, but she’s always about two steps behind (Madonna is still popular, right?). And in situations requiring flirting? Forget it. Her equivalent to smoldering eye contact and a sexy wink is talking about the feeding habits of the blue-ringed octopus.

Strengths: Esme excels at science and social situations and she is particularly beast at Sudoku.
Weaknesses: Esme hates chess. Hates it. She can’t handle it. She isn’t good at it. She also has a bit of a problem realizing the difference between people who think science is cool and people who are pretending to like science.
Fears: Esme is afraid of not being able to control her shifting again and suffocating out of water…or worse: The other way around and drowning to death.
Secret: Esme is a virgin (barely).

History
Just before Halloween, Salesha Bakus’ dream finally came true. After raising four boys, the Bakus finally was gifted with a Baby girl. The name stuck. “Baby Girl” Esme grew up surrounded by voices; a loud, happy, close-knit family with weekly game nights and yearly reunions. Being the only girl made things simultaneously awesome and a little awkward. The large extended family was proud of her, excited to have someone to wear pink and dress up…but playing with her brothers was a little odd. She eventually just learned to get over it and pursue her own interests.
Through elementary and middle school Esme excelled in the sciences. She adored math and biology, and eventually became fascinated by the creatures of the African savannah. It became her dream to work in zoology, studying the social habits of hyenas in Africa…but it seemed fate would have other plans for her.
During a routine science class in the eighth grade, Esme’s eyes began to hurt and she couldn’t see. She felt strange, and complained of great pains all over her body, particularly in her arms. It wasn’t long before the classroom full of shrieking thirteen year olds (Esme included, if she could shriek) had a Common Octopus on its hands. Wriggling in the middle of the room, the stunned and suffocating Esme was at the mercy of her teacher. It was simply a stroke of luck that the science class kept a reef tank for observation. Her teacher was the only one with the guts to plunge her into the tank until the paramedics (and experts from an aquarium) came to Esme’s aid.
Two hours later the soaked, salty, traumatized girl shifted back to normal. Early the next morning, a recruiter from Hammel was at her door to take her to a place that would help her learn how to keep from randomly turning into an octopus all the time. Baby Girl liked the idea of controlling a dangerous power like that, and so was excited to leave. Besides, she was tired of being the baby! She spent her years at Hammel like all girls spend their teen years: awkward, mostly happy, and a little melodramatic. She didn’t date much, but applied herself heavily in school and graduated in the top of her class from Eisai gakkō, having studied abroad there in her senior year.
Esme remained in Japan after graduating, aiding Eisai gakkō in their meta-human ability research while continuing her post-high school education in Marine Biology (Africa seemed pretty out of the question, by this point). She became very familiar with experiencing the world as an Octopus, having acquired three other shifted forms and decided that maybe it was time to put her abilities and her education to some real-world usage. Aided by Eisai gakkō’s research division, Esme signed on to work with a team of Marine researchers studying the fragile ecosystem conditions of pacific reefs. It wasn’t quite Hyenas in the savannah…but damn was it close! The findings were published in several scientific journals, with Esme’s name listed as a field researcher. While the microscopic level of fame was fairly satisfying, Esme missed the states and wanted to return home to a quieter and less dangerous field of work. While it was very convenient to have an octopus take reef samples, it was very inconvenient to have one of your researchers almost eaten by a shark.
Esme took her leave from Japan at age thirty and spent some time at home before applying for a job at Hammel. She has since moved to Vermont and lives happily in Pilot Ridge.
