And so it begins! (Chloe)

Brendan was practically skipping. He was so deliriously happy right then it couldn’t even be described. But spending time with Chloe always did that. She was the kind of person who everybody had to just love. And love he did. As a friend, of course. Not that he didn’t try. Unfortunately for him though, he wasn’t exactly the girl’s type. Which, if he didn’t have Vin, he would one hundred and ten percent see as his lose. Because she was freakin’ adorable!

Mostly, he was excited because a.) She was just horrifyingly cute as a button and b.) It’d been a little while since he’d seen her last. What with being fired from Hammel and having to find a job… Plus… He and Vin were still in the honeymoon phase. When not in bed, it was difficult to separate the two. Almost impossible. Lets just take a minute to be thankful that Brendan has some semblance of what it means to be responsible.

Still walking around the lake, but not having yet seen her, Brendan just started hollering her name. “CHLOOOEEE! OH CHLOOOOOOEEEEEEE!” No, he didn’t care who he was bothering, which he probably most definitely was. Here he was, this obnoxious guy, walking around like he owned the place, yelling for his friend. “OOOOHHH MISS SINGLETON! I HAVE A PRESENT FOR YOU!”

He did. Granted, it was an apple. Apple for the teacher? Get it? It wouldn’t have been if he were still a teacher, but now that he wasn’t, it kind of was. To him. Not me. I think he’s being lame. But he thinks he’s being cute.

Finally spotting her, his smile grew and he straightened his bowtie. “CHLOE! My love!” And he even bounced a little and ran to her. Once he was by her side, he wrapped his arms around her waist, lifted her up, and spun her around. “Hot damn Chloe I’ve missed you!”

After a good spin around, he set her down and smiled wide, still keeping his arms around her. “Have you come to your senses yet and realized you’re madly in love with me Chloe Singleton?” And then he added, in a hushed voice, “Because it’s obvious to everybody else darling.”

Chloe had woken up early to prepare for her picnic with Brendan. Why? Well, for one, it was a picnic and picnics required effort to be perfect. For another, it was Brendan, and since it had been a while since she'd last spent any quality time with her friend, she intended to pull out all the stops. So she'd woken up early, kissed her sleeping girlfriend, and then started to make all her favorite picnic foods.

There was potato and pasta salad, fried chicken, sandwiches, and even watermelon that she had used cookie cutters on to make into cute little shapes like hearts and stars. Once all the food was finished, Chloe spent another good hour or so getting ready, eventually deciding an an adorable outfit to go with the red gingham blanket she was bringing that was so iconic and therefore irreplaceable. Packing all the food, along with several bottles of water and lemonade, into a equally classic woven basket, Chloe headed off to the lake.

She was humming to herself as she selected a spot along the bank, not too close to the water but not too far away either, and spread out the blanket. The basket was placed on the corner of the blanket to hold it down while she smoothed the rest of it out over the grass. She was just about to start unpacking it when she heard a familiar voice calling her name. Long, blonde hair went flying as Chloe whipped her head around, quickly pushing herself to her feet and ran towards him just the same.

"Brendan!" She squealed, throwing her arms around his neck as his lifted her up and spun her around. Kicking her feet delightedly, Chloe giggled "I've missed you toooo!" with her entire face brightened by her excited smile.

When Bren set her down, she leaned back in his arms and looked up at him coyly. "Oh I don't know. You're still missing some very important things, my dear." She poked at his chest, laughing cheerfully, and tossed her hair over her shoulder. "Is it? Huh. And here I thought I was doing so well at turning you down."

This girl. Brendan couldn’t describe it. She was glorious. She was adorable. She was the girl next door. Not literally, but you know what I mean. And girl next door with secrets that were only seen behind closed doors. Not that Brendan knew that. But it’s fun to tease him that I have information that he doesn’t. Information that would quite literally blow his mind. Anyways…

Brendan’s head cocked to the side when Chloe said he was missing some essential stuff. “What? Like a vagina?” He snorted. “Pleeease… I mean, are they really all they’re cracked up to be?” The fact that he’d been chasing girls for the same reason for the last twenty-eight years and some odd months of his life like it was the whale from Moby Dick wasn’t the point. And just so you know, comparing a woman’s body parts to a man/ship-eating whale? Brendan’s comparison, not mine.

Of course, the comment itself was perplexing. He’d said it, mostly, teasingly to try and turn Chloe from women body parts and onto men’s. Now for the part that would mean it made no sense at all. He himself, wasn’t interested in women. At the moment at least. So even teasingly trying to get Chloe to like men… Well it would do nothing. Brendan gets an award for thinking things through so well.

“See you think you’re turning me down well. But everybody knows that ridiculously in love with me. They can feel it in their bones.” He smiled at her. “And mostly, it makes them go ‘Awww… They should just… Go at it like rabbits!” Of course, being Brendan, and needing to be ridiculous, he pulled her close and made a scene of pretending to kiss and devour her neck.

After pulling back from Chloe’s neck he smiled, with little fits of laughter escaping from him. “Just tryin’ to give the people what they want Chloe.”

Once his giggled stopped, he looked her over. Yeah, he gave her the up-down that guys do. But he always did. It was almost routine now. “Well look at you. Get yourself all gussied up for me, didja? Told ya’ you were in love with me.” He said, linking his arm through hers and headed where she’d come from so they could begin their afternoon rendezvous.

"Among other things." She said coyly, pressing her palms to his chest to make her point, then dissolved into a fit of giggles. "Brendan James!" She pretended to look appalled as he asked if they were worth it. "I never thought I'd see the day..." A smile spread across her face as she looked up at his face.

Of course she knew what had caused him to lose his job. It didn't take long for the information to reach her and while she thought it was highly inappropriate and also incredibly irresponsible, she also knew what kind of a person that Brendan was. It didn't seem at all out of place for him. Well... except for the part where the student he'd gotten involved with was another man.

"Not too long ago, you would have agreed with me, but then again, I had a hunch all that skirt chasing was just an act." Chloe shot him an appraising look before her laughter bubbled up again and she covered her mouth with her hand to try and keep it in. In all the years she'd known Brendan, he'd been the ultimate flirt, and there was never a time he wasn't after some pretty girl. "It seems you're interested in something else these days." Her eyebrows raised knowingly and she put her hands on her hips.

"How am I always the last one to get these memos?" Faking offense, Chloe huffed and stuck her bottom lip out in a pout, only to shriek and squeal when he grabbed her and pretended to kiss her neck. Laughing and clutching onto Brendan's jacket as if she didn't she might fall, Chloe called out "Oh Brendan!" in the most monotone sounding voice she could muster. When he finally stopped, her sides were aching from laughter and she had to lean against him while she tried to catch her breath.

When she was finally able to breathe without laughing, Chloe took a step back and looked Bren over just as he had done to her. "Of course, my dear. I knew you'd do the same and I couldn't let you show me up." She reached to fondly tug on his bowtie, then up to grab his cheek between her thumb and forefinger, giving his face a little shake. "Aren't you just a cuuutie~?"

She released his cheek in favor of locking arms with him, practically skipping back over to the blanket. "I hope you're hungry. I brought a lot of food." Once she reached the blanket, Chloe plopped down on it, toeing off her shoes and sliding the picnic basket over, ready to show Brendan all that she'd made for their little picnic.

Her hands on his chest reminded him of what else he was missing. “Boobs”, he said longing. “Damn I do miss those.” It was true. He did kinda miss some things about a woman’s body. It was different from a man’s. Women were soft and curvy. Men were strong and muscular. But almost immediately, smile was on his face again. “Give me a month at the gym Chlo and I could have a nice rack for ya’.”

Yes, Brendan knew he had made a mistake. But the mistake in question had been a surprise to him. As in he hadn’t planned it. And he might have been a little offended if his friend were to say she wasn’t surprised by it at all. He had fooled himself into thinking he had better morals than to get involved with a student. Obviously, he was wrong.

With a shrug, Brendan smirked at his friend. “You only have yourself to blame. I can only be rejected by you so many times before I completely loose faith in all women and turn to men out of spite. And look. Look at what you’ve done.” He said as his hand waved along his body as if to showcase it. “Now women across the globe will weep at the fact that they can’t have a piece of this. Because of you Chloe. I hope you feel the shame of betraying your own sex.” Yes, he was joking. About Chloe being the reason he was seeing a man. Everything else… Well he was only about half joking. But she was used to Brendan’s ego by now.

His expression turned sheepish though when she asked why she was always the last to find out things. “Um… Well… I haven’t told anybody really if that makes it any better.” No, Brendan wasn’t ashamed. More lazy. And unsure how to go about it. He imagined the effort that had to go into explaining the situation. And even that made him tired. “The Captain doesn’t know. Neither do Al or Ollie.” He admitted to his oldest friend that he was still keeping it quiet when it came to his family.

He would’ve taken a moment to sulk over his numerous secrets (because he really truly hated secret keeping), but he wouldn’t settle for the dullness in her voice while he attacked her neck. “Chloe Singleton. You sound like you’re enjoying yourself right with some high-pitched squealing or I will be forced to throw you in the water and look much too pretty for that to happen, but it will.”

But his threats were nearly forgotten when she said that he was a cutie though. His smile grew wide, his back straightened, and he pushed his chest out. “Well I had to my love. When one is with you, they can strive all they want to be the best looking. But they’ll always have to settle for second best.” With a smirk he added, “And I’ll be damned if I let anybody else here show me up.” Brendan’s not a flirt at all! What are you talking about?

“If you cooked Chloe, it wouldn’t matter if I was hungry or not, I’d eat it.” Gotta love those sexual in-you-end-os. Bren made me do that. Sitting down beside Chloe, he followed suit and kicked off his shoes. Then peeked over her shoulder to catch a glimpse in the basket. “Gimmegimmegimme!” He said as he pushed the fake glasses he was wearing back up to the bridge of his nose.

Giggling to herself, Chloe gently patted Brendan's cheek. "I'm sorry, hon, but that's not the kind of rack I'm after." Truly it would never get boring, teasing Brendan. Even when they'd been young she got a kick out of it, but it was obvious that she meant no harm in it. Brendan had been a very good friend to her then and he still was now, even if they didn't get to spend as much time together as they used to.

"Oh please!" Feigning exasperation, Chloe put her hand to her forehead and shook her head. Brendan's ego, while well-deserved (even Chloe had to recognize that he was a handsome man), was also a source of great amusement to her. How one person could love himself so much... well, it was beyond her. "Betraying them? Excuse me, but without you as competition, that means more for me!" She stuck out her chest, put her hands on her hips, and tipped her chin up in an attempt to look haughty.

Not that she really meant that, she was perfectly happy in her current relationship, despite the problems.

Chloe gave Brendan an almost motherly look as he admitted to keeping it all a secret from his family. "You haven't told them? Surely they know you don't work at the institute anymore though, right?" She took hold of the edges of his bowtie, affectionately straightening it. "It's okay. If you need any help, I'm here for you. You know that." She smiled fondly up at him, even while he dipped her back and pretended to gnaw on her neck.

"Brendan, sweetie, if I made it sound realistic, you wouldn't stop. And if you throw me in the lake I will take you with me! Then make you buy me a new dress." She fixed him with a warning pout before dragging him over to the blanket, which was a little bit farther away from the bank and thus safer.

Humming to herself as she opened the basket, Chloe started taking the containers of food out and showing them to her friend. "All made fresh for you this morning!" Unpacking the paper plates and the plastic silverware, Chloe passed a bottle of water to Brendan. "Help yourself."

With a pout, Brendan whined. “Not fair. I’m not a girl. I don’t have boobies.” And in that second, a huge goofy grin came to his face. “Oooooh! I could get implants for you!” It seemed logical. Except for that it wasn’t. “And it’ll be like… what? How long do those things take to heal? Like, six weeks? At most I would think.” Giggling, he imagined himself after having the procedure done. “You have to admit, I’d still look good with ‘em.”

He would’ve said something immediately. Honest! This is Brendan after all. A come back was already on the tip of his tongue. But then she had to stick out her chest. And he really did miss boobs. Vin was a fair trade though. That didn’t stop him from taking a good long look at Chloe, appreciating her form. They’d been friends for a good long while after all. And he’d done it enough times in the past. It almost would’ve been rude not to do it. After a good long stare, he looked back at his friend. Well, at her eyes. “Yeah, well now that you’ve turned me off ALL women, I’ll send any that try to bark up this tree your way.” Of course, his favors didn’t come without a price. “And all I ask in return is a pair of underwear. Yours to be exact.”

The look. It was a Chloe look. Whenever he did something bad or was keeping secrets from her or the family, it was what he got. It’d been a look he compared to one his mother used to give him in similar situations. His face instantly turned sheepish and he only looked at her from the corner of his eye. “Mom knows?” He offered her. That was another secret though, using the illusions to see her and talk to her. She might think he meant he’d been going to her grave and talking to her. “And they know. But uh… I told them I resigned to work at the theater with Eugene.” Looking at her again, he lowered his head slightly, embarrassed he’d lied. “Though, I’m sure everybody’s talking. So how Ollie and Al don’t know is beyond me. Unless they’re just keeping quiet.”

Chloe’s pout should be against the law in Brendan’s opinion. It’s not fair. She’s just so adorable! And her pout so cute and heart breaking at the same time. “Chloe, your pouts aaactually make my heart hurt!” He said with a groan as he allowed himself to be pulled to the blanket.

Looking at the food, Brendan’s mouth began to salivate. “You know, I’ve been preparing Chloe. I didn’t have anything to eat yesterday because I knew you were going must too awesome than I deserve!” Yes, Brendan had an ego. But he loved stroking others’ egos very much. Just so happened, in this case it was true. Peeking into containers, his stomach began to rumble.

“So come on Chloe. Your turn. You’ve heard me dish. Now it’s your turn. What have I missed in your life? Who do you have on your leash of loooove.” He questioned as he put a little of everything on his plate.

"And that, my dear man, is why you and I could never work." She gently patted his cheek, only to pull her hand away and look concerned at the grin that took over his face. For good reason too, because his next suggestion was all sorts of ridiculous, but that was Brendan for you. "I don't mean to quote Sir Mix-A-Lot, but silicon parts are made for toys." Even Chloe had to laugh at herself for that. "Sorry, sweetie, but it looks like you're stuck with sausage."

Brendan really did bring out the worst in her, but she loved him nonetheless. He had always been a good friend.

Chloe simply rolled her eyes while Brendan took a good long look at her chest. If she thought about it, she might have been disturbed by how used to be being ogled she was; what with Brendan and a handful of students, she couldn't go three days without being eyed up. But she didn't think about it - it was easier not to. So once Brendan had stared for long enough, Chloe gestured upwards. "I'm up here, you know." She teased and tucked her hair behind her ear.

If Brendan hadn't been Brendan, Chloe might have slapped him for such a suggestion, but instead she burst into a fit of laughter so strong that she had to double over and hold her stomach. When she was finally able to talk again, she was out of breath. "Brendan, my friend, you are not getting a pair of my underwear. Not for all the women in the world!" She placed her hand on his shoulder. "Keep dreaming." Chloe really didn't want to think about what he'd do with them if she had agreed.

Thankfully, she wasn't given much time to contemplate that, as more important things were brought up. At first she had been a little disappointed that Brendan had lied, but these were complicated circumstances. "I have certainly heard my fair share of rumors. Although I would have preferred to hear it from you." She took Brendan's hand and held it between both of hers. "I really think you owe your father that much." Smiling, the motherly look faded. "He'll understand."

Chloe began filling up her plate as well, then fetched a bottle of water and made herself comfortable on the blanket. "Well, now that you ask, there is someone." She giggled, blushing a little. Ella had wanted to keep their relationship quiet, but Chloe didn't think she would mind if she told one friend. "She works at the school too. A recruiter." She twisted her hair around her finger. "And she's my roommate."

Brendan’s face has quite possibly the definition of sad. His eyebrows pushed together. His bottom lip began to quiver. And, thanks to so much work in the theater and his ability to cry on command, his eyes began to water. “Chloe Singleton. Do you really truly believe that if you were straight and I were still straight, that we wouldn’t work? That we wouldn’t be perfect together?” The way he spoke, his voice strained and shaky, made it sound as if her answer would effect him in some kind of big way. But after a minute, he dabbed at his watery eyes and giggled.

And really, she should know not to quote Sir Mix-A-Lot around him. “MY ANACONDA DON’T WANT NONE UNLESS YOU GOT BUNS HUN!” He sung, more like yelled, for all around to hear. Not to mention the fact that he jumped, turning around, jutting his ass out at her, and smacking it. Always a class act. Of course, after only one line, he turned around and looked at her again. “Not even a liiiittle taco though?” And I’m going to stop now, because we all know it could be a lot worse and he wants to keep going.

“Oh trust me, I know exactly where your eyes are, love.” Chloe had beautiful eyes. Actually, Chloe had beautiful everything. “But it’s been awhile. Boobies… We miss each other.” Yes, Brendan was positive boobs in general missed him. “Hey now! Chloe. I’d give you a pair of my panties if you wanted some.” Unsurprisingly, it’s true. “Don’t you worry,” he said with a smirk that said exactly what was on his mind. “I most definitely will keep dreaming.”

He had to drop his head though. A little in shame. Ok, all in shame. Chloe should’ve been the first person he went to, telling her everything, so that she didn’t have to hear things from others. “I know. I’m sorry Chloe. But I’ll tell you whatever it is you want to know. Even the juicy details if you want.” He said with a smile, looking back up as he made the joke. Giving her hand a squeeze, his smile changed from one of humor to one of thanks. “I’m sure he will. But… Vin’s a guy. A student. I lost my job… I don’t wanna give my ol’ man a heart attack, ya’ know?” Given everything else in Brendan’s life, arrests (all for minor stuff) and being banned from places and other things… He’d caused quite the rift in his father’s life already.

His plate filled, embarrassingly so (except there is no embarrassingly to Bren), Brendan began eating. His fork had been midair when Chloe said she was seeing somebody. “Chloe Singleton. How dare you keep quiet this long about having a special lady friend. And a Hammel person too! Who is she? Spill. Cooome on.” He said, putting his plate down on the blanket, and stared at her.

"Perrrhaaapppss...." Chloe drew the word out, taking a moment just to survey Brendan's attempt at puppy-facing. She'd never say it to him out loud, because his ego was big enough as it was, but he was getting pretty good at that look. Besides, Chloe liked to think she was immune to puppy eyes, even if she was really good at giving them. "In some other alternate dimension, there's a Brendan getting all of the Chloe love. You should be proud for him." Not that Bren really needed anyone to tell him when and who and where and why to be proud.

But then Brendan had to be ridiculous and for a moment Chloe wondered why she didn't have a permanent palm impression in her forehead because as cute as he was, he caused her to facepalm more than anyone else. When he turned back around, she only could look at him for a moment before erupting with laughter, trying to muffle it behind her hand. "You are... something else." It was all she could think to say in response to... whatever that was.

Chloe quirked an eyebrow and placed her hand on her hip. "Your panties? You wear panties? Wait, nevermind, I don't want to know. I don't want that image in my head." She put her fingers to her temples and rubbed circles against them, squeezing her eyes shut and chanting "Bunnies and kitties" to stop any semblance of a mental picture that might have caused.

She gave him a reassuring pat on the knee when he hung his head, the smile on her face more fond than joyous. "Just one question, if you don't mind. Are you happy?" What Brendan had done was certainly irresponsible, perhaps crazy on some level (it was Vincent Verax after all), but that was just Brendan for you. It didn't make her think any less of him, so she was certain that Tim would feel the same way. "It's better he hears from you sooner rather than from someone else later. At least then it can be on your terms."

Brendan calling her out made her blush even more, her eyes darting down to study the blanket. "Well she wants to keep it quiet." She pushed some of the food around on her plate and bit her lower lip, only glancing at Bren for a few seconds. "Besides, I think you were a little bit too busy with the students to hang around with the recruiters. I doubt you'd know her."

“Well duuuuh!” That seemed like the most obvious thing to Brendan. Of course in some alternate dimension, Chloe was straight and Brendan was straight and they were getting it on like rabbits and having all sorts of gorgeous babies together. However, this might only seem obvious to him. And maybe me too. But we know this because long ago, when Chloe and Bren were still young, well younger, a certain boy might have crushed very hard on a certain girl. “Of course alternate dimension Chloe and Brendan are getting it on. I’d hate to think in EVERY dimension you’re denying me.” And causing raging… Moving right along.

Is it any surprise at all that Bren was smiling proudly at Chloe when he turned back around? Smiling so wide it caused his eyes to be nearly closed. Because who wouldn’t be proud at a moment like that? “I may be something else, but I have the love of a good woman.” He said, poking Chloe’s nose. “And that’s all I need.”

“Gosh Chloe! It’s like you don’t know me at aaall!” Shaking his head, Brendan put on his best broken hearted face. But he couldn’t hold it long. Chloe trying to brain bleach what she was sure to be picturing was adorable. And impossible. “Of course I look damn good in women’s panties. And their stockings too. If you want, I have a picture at him. I could bring it next time.”

Brendan took a moment before answering his friend and actually thought about his life now. Despite losing a job he’d dreamed of having since he was young, despite being banned from Hammel grounds forever, despite having gained a certain reputation, was he happy with his decision. Well, it only took a moment of though before Brendan turned to his friend and smiled. “I am ridiculously happy. And I love him.” He realized it was the first time he was telling Chloe that straight forward. Though, all the life changes should say as much. “He’s… Just something special.” Unable to find the right words to describe just how Vincent made him feel, Brendan shrugged and took a bite of food, smiling all the while though.

Quiet? That struck Brendan as… Odd. Granted, he and Vin had done the same at first. But the second they didn’t have to, they flaunted it. Ok, maybe not flaunted it. Because Tim still didn’t know. Not the point though. All Bren knew was that if he were in a relationship with Chloe Singleton, there wouldn’t be a person in town, possibly the state, who didn’t know. “Why does she want to keep it quiet? Will it get you guys into trouble at the school?” He wouldn’t press her for the who. The who didn’t really matter. So long as the relationship was healthy. And they treated Chloe like a damn princess, like she deserved.

Chloe went crosseyed and giggled when Brendan poked her nose, then fixed him with a bright smile. "That you do. You should count yourself lucky, you know, not just any man is privy to such a thing." Playfully, she stuck her tongue out at him, then poked him back in the chest.

But when he made to expound on his adventures with ladies' undergarments, Chloe lunged forward and covered his mouth with her hand. "Nooo! Spare me the horror! Pleeeease!" Her cheeks had turned a lovely shade of pink and she fixed him with her best pout. "You're going to give me nightmares!" Okay, so she might have been exaggerating just a little, but exaggeration was the name of the game when anyone spent any time with Brendan. The general rule of thumb was something like: the more dramatic, the better.

Tucking her hair behind her ear, Chloe searched Brendan's face when he answered. After years of experience, she could tell when Brendan was lying or even trying to fudge the truth a little bit, but she didn't see any signs of it in his eyes. And that was what she wanted to hear and see. Chloe took Brendan's hand between both her own and smiled at him. "That's all that matters. You're happy. I'm excited for you." She gave the back of his hand a little pat before releasing it and letting him get back to his lunch.

Of course it was a little bit more difficult with the spotlight fixed on her. It was a position that, unlike Brendan, Chloe didn't like. Squirming and blushing even harder than before, she only peered at Bren out of the corner of her eyes. "No? I mean... I don't think so. I'm not sure what the policy is on that." She started picking at a loose string on the blanket. "I'm not sure if she's ready to... be out yet, you know?"

“Chloe. I have counted myself lucky every single day since I’ve met ya’.” He said with a smile. And it was true. Brendan had accepted a long time ago that Chloe would never be ‘his’. But that didn’t mean he couldn’t appreciate the person she was. “You best count yourself lucky too though. Because, I’m a one of kind. You’re not ever gonna find a best friend like me anywhere else.”

Smirking under the hand of his best friend, Brendan opened his mouth and licked her palm. Immediately laughing, it was obvious he was proud of his childlike behavior. But who’s really surprised by that? “You would love it! Me in ladies underwear! That would be the one image of a man that would get you all hot and bothered. Don’t even liiie about nightmares. Because that’s just ridiculous. This pretty mug of mine? This hot bod. Nobody’s every having nightmares.”

“Thank you. I know it must be… A little difficult to understand. But…” With a smile, he shrugged. “You know me. I don’t let opportunity just pass me by.” He said with a wink. Because she probably knew better than anybody.

But it was time to move on to what he was more fascinated in knowing about. Chloe. Brendan would never, in all his existence, be able to learn enough about the girl.
