[Juniper Birdsong]

"Ohmygoshohmygoshohmygosh," Juniper was practically hyperventilating, over the moon with excitement about her date with Jeff. Okay.... It wasn't really a date. Okay, maybe not at all. But they would be alone and talking about things! Even if those things were just biology and stuff! The project they were working on had to do with humans and the environment, a subject that Juniper was very familiar with.

But that wasn't important. What was important was that she was dressed for the occasion - a nice skirt, as usual, with a wide-necked t-shirt that she had sewn herself, and clung to her thin, curveless form nicely. Well, as nicely as anything could cling to a stick. There was a fair amount of skin showing, but hopefully not enough to make him uncomfortable.

When she was sure everything was in her knapsack (including a blanket and a picnic she had made herself - hopefully he wouldn't mind her slightly strange diet) and her mass of curls had been diligently brushed through about a zillion times, she went out to the parking lot and started the car. The drive was short, and soon she was finding a place to settle down, amidst a field of late-blooming daisies. Perfect for a break! She glanced around, before sitting cross-legged in the grass and waiting for Jeff to appear. She had told him the place to meet her at, so hopefully he wouldn't have difficulty finding her.

Jeff had ran it by a couple of the guys he--usually--if often--maybe not all the time but--not even really friends with--spoke with and they all agreed that Juniper, while using the study biology work they were assign, had asked him out on a date. Jeff had a date. It was not the usual dinner and a movie, but Jeff was still very unease and self-conscious. Jeff had somehow acted the same as he always did around people yet had not made a complete fool of himself. Juniper really wanted to hang out with him, and spend time with him. Sure they were partners and had to work together to get a good grade, but they also did not have to do their project at the lake. That made it a date.

These same friends, that were not exactly friends, told him he needed to dress nice (not like that was hard, Jeff was always dressed impeccably—except the first time they spoke to each other, when he was practically naked). So he was not nervous about looking good. He was nervous about messing up, about thinking an unclean thought or something that she got offended by. He could not afford to do it—sure she was oddly accepting, which was a refreshing break.

Although, the scariest part of all this was that Jeff actually liked her. Talking to her that night and occasionally in class now, and becoming partners, Jeff realized how nice and cute she was. She was wonderful. Jeff could not stop himself from thinking about her when she was not around, and he nearly always had a blush on when she was.

Dressed, he was now ready to go. He left the parking lot in his new/old car ('96 Gt convertible), which was an early birthday present from his parents. His dad's hobby outside of work is restoring vehicles. The only old part of this car was the frame, his dad had replaced everything else, even the radio so he has an auxiliary audio cable so he can listen to his iphone.

He hoped that they could stay on topic just because that would be easier to deal with, but Jeff was not very hopeful that he could keep himself from getting distracted. Even now as he shifted from second into third (his car was a manual) he was distracted by her smile, and nearly rear ended a sedan at a just-turned-green light. He blew out a breath and shook his hair, to clear his mind.

Finally, he arrived at the lake without further incident and uncurled himself from the driver’s seat and pulled out his backpack and locked the car at the same time. He was under strict orders from his father (and mother) to not drive with the top down, in the seasons that were not summer. They did not want him to catch a cold. He also was only allowed to drive with the appropriate number of passengers as there were seats. Jeff suspected that was why they gave him such a tiny car in the first place. He spotted Juniper and immediately his heart thundered at the top of his chest and he felt a blush creep up his cheek bones. Great. He closed the space between them, fixing his gaze at the ground. He had to concentrate. He had to.

“Hello, Juniper. Sorry I am late. I had a hard time locating my text book.” It had somehow hidden itself under his bed.

Juniper was idly flipping through some pages of her own text book when the sound of a car pulling into the parking lot had her looking up. It hadn't been a very busy morning so far at the lake, and she assumed it was Jeff arriving. A smile brightened her face as she saw him get out of the vehicle, and she forced herself to keep from wiggling with excitement as he approached. He looked a little worried, she thought, and guessed that he was trying hard to control his ability. She still felt awful that he had to be so careful around people - she really didn't care what he thought, and wanted to do all she could to make him more comfortable around her. She wasn't sure yet how she was going to do that, other than lots of reassurance and smiles. Hopefully that would be enough.

His gaze was directed at the ground, but his greeting was nice enough, and Juniper beamed at him from where she sat. Goodness, he was cute. She spent a lot of her spare time thinking about that night they had met, and the conversations they had had since then, and she was almost at the conclusion that she actually... Had a crush. She hadn't had a crush in... A long time. It made her heart race. "It's alright, Jeff. Text books have a habit of hiding when we need them most, I know." She giggled lightly. "Thanks for coming! I thought it would be nice, you know, to get away from Hammel and maybe get some inspiration for our project from nature."

She patted the area beside her, pulling out her notebook and some colored pens in preparation for working on the project. If, you know, they didn't end up getting distracted and talking about other things, which, knowing her, was quite likely. "So um, I guess we're supposed to write about an environmental issue, right? I was thinking, maybe we could write about deforestation in Vermont, and how it's effecting native species." She reached up and scratched absent-mindedly at her hair, smiling apologetically. "I mean, unless you have a better idea?" She was majorly into trees, so anything that had to do with the health of her precious forests was an issue to her.

Emotions were not Jeff's friend. They did not like him and always seemed to want to betray him. Constantly. If he woke up in a rare good mood, usually the first thing he did was anger someone with a snide thought comment, and get a glare. Jeff tried not to be too optimistic about his day, or his emotion, or his 'luck.' He discovered a while ago, that if he aimed low with his expectations, he was never upset or let down because of an outcome of something or another.

That being said, his heart and brain had him positively giddy. Juniper looked as cute and perfect as always, and now that he was seated this close to her, it had the palms of his hands slick with perspiration. He fumbled getting his bag off of his shoulder and withdrew his textbook with a small puff of a sigh. "It was a good idea, getting us both out of Hammel." Jeff hardly ever left the campus, for two main reasons; he didn't have anything to do off of campus and his sense of direction was deplorable. (how many times has he had to call someone on staff to give him directions back to campus....five...ten?)

Environmental issue? The only ones he was really familiar with were over population of cities in South Korea and the nuclear threat from the North. He had lived in the United States for the past couple of years, but that did not mean he was a news-watching member of society. He knew next to nothing about the problems of this country except for the obesity, which was something he could see with his own eyes. "If you think that is a good topic for our project, then I think we should do it." He smiled faintly at her, not wanting to admit his ignorance. It was suddenly important to him that she thought he was smart.

"So, the native species, like bears?" He smiled faintly, but as far as he knew, unicorns and basilisks could inhabit the forest and he would be none the wiser.

Unlike Jeff, Juniper was the definition of optimistic. Even if something bad happened to her or someone close to her, she always managed to find a bright side to things. She very rarely lost her temper about anything, and tended to find joy in the little things. Just being this close to Jeff and his sweet, shy smile was enough to make her week, if not her month. This was that important to her.

Juniper nodded in agreement, adjusting herself into a slightly more comfortable position so she could face him. "I find the lake is one of my best places to study," she commented, plucking a stray daisy and smiling gently. "No drama, no distractions, just... Calm and quiet." Very quiet. She was aware of every beat of her heart, of the small puffs of breath she released each time she exhaled. So far she hadn't caught any thoughts from Jeff, and she hoped he wasn't too stressed about keeping his mental walls up. Her eyes softened. "Just so you know, Jeff, I won't judge you for anything you think," she told him honestly. "Really. It's okay, I understand." She pondered the idea of reaching out to touch his hand reassuringly, but thought that was probably too much too soon. They should actually try to get something done first, and then... Well, they could talk about anything, really.

She beamed as he agreed to her project proposal. "Wonderful! Um, I think our textbooks talk about deforestation somewhere..." Juniper began flipping through the textbook again, pausing to look up and smile at him again as he asked about bears. "I think black bears live in Vermont, yeah," she agreed. She tapped her bottom lip, trying to remember some endangered species. "I think Canadian Lynx are endangered. Oh, and um... Martens!" A few other species came to mind, but she didn't see reason to mention them. "Um, they're like... Foxy-weasel things," she explained vaguely. "They're really cute." Like you.

She also realized she was latching onto Amos's habit of saying 'um' when she was nervous. She made a mental note to stop. "Anyway, we can try to come up with a thesis about, ah, the connections between habitat loss and native species' population decrease?" She hoped that wasn't too boring of a subject - she knew not everyone was as concerned about the environment as she.

Jeff was a more woodsy sort of person, so when he looked about the lake, he could only imagine how many giant and creepy fish and snakes swam underneath the surface. Jeff usually was not bothered by large bodies of water, but that television show River Monsters had him scared to get into anything deeper than a puddle. He did not want to get stung by a table sized manta-ray, or bitten in half by a catfish that had a mouth wider than he was thick. No sir, not him. He did not actually believe there were things that big swimming around in front of him, but he also did not know.

He laughed faintly. Awkwardly.

"Yeah, the lake is pretty."

He looked down at his hands folded in his lap when she mentioned his thoughts and how they honestly wouldn't bother her at all. It was so strange a thing, but Jeff was comforted by it. He really couldn't help what he thought, and was so relieved that she was so accepting, but like anything else, saying and doing are two completely different things.

He was glad to see his choice of words pleased her, as she beamed at him. He was not sure what worked, exactly, but was glad nonetheless. He could not help the grin that spread across his face when she assured him that bears did, in fact, live in Vermont. Gooooood. He nodded faintly at the Canadian Lynx and the Martens, but he was not sure what either one of them looked like, exactly. Did the Canadian Lynx look any different than those gray coated, pointy eared ones he saw on those National Geographic shows (his parents are old. what else do you think they would watch?)

"So, because the trees are getting cut down, it is killing the wildlife, like those. How...uhm....so do we make a poster?" He scratched his scalp as he tried to envision how exactly they would turn it into a project, instead of just a written paper.

Ah, the wonders of aquatic animals. Marine biology was one of Juniper's favorite subjects, and she hoped some day to help save whale populations, or something similar. If she had known about Jeff's fear, she wouldn't quite know what to think - but she would probably try to convince him otherwise.

She nodded faintly. But really, the lake wasn't what Juniper was most focused on.

He grinned, then, and her heart picked up a notch. He looked so serious most of the time, it was like the sun coming out on a cloudy day. "You have a nice smile," she told him before she could think otherwise. It was in her nature to compliment people - she wasn't used to feeling embarrassed and looking away afterwards with a nervous chuckle, like now. It was weird, but not unpleasant.

"Exactly," Juniper nodded. She was glad she hadn't lost him, and he didn't look completely bored out of his mind. "Hmmm." She pondered his question, leaning back to rest on her hands and unconsciously leaning closer to Jeff. "We could draw like.... A timeline sort of thing, or a progression of events. Like.... First is the decision the forest companies make to cut down trees, next is the process of cutting them down, then we can explain how the habitat loss and erosion and stuff effect the native species, and then how losing them throws off the balance of the entire ecosystem." She wasn't sure if it made sense entirely, but at least it was the start of an idea.

They continued to converse, Juniper sketching out ideas and writing notes as they clarified their project. After some time, when they had started to begin the actual project, Juniper let out a small huff and sat back. "I think we should take a break," she declared. They had been working hard. But with Jeff, it wasn't too bad. It was actually kind of fun. "Are you hungry?" she asked, reaching for her bag. "I brought some food," she added, smiling up at him.

His not-so-pleasant thoughts of the unknown under the water were forgotten when she complimented his smile. He wasn't even really aware that he was grinning, which was a silly idea, but so true. Well maybe he had been aware, but now that she brought it too attention, and said how she liked it, he blushed. "I like yours too. It lights up the room--" upon looking around he winced a little. Not only was that uncontrollably lame, but they were also outside.

Change the subject!

"A timeline.....works. Just tell me what to do." Jeff didn't have the initiative to come up with good ideas on his own, and he would hate for his lack of project creativity to hurt Juniper's grade. If she told him what to do, however, he could easily follow her directions and that would be easier on the both of them.

It was nice...just working pleasantly with Juniper there, she had such a nice voice anyway, it was so easy to listen to. He was actually enjoying doing study work with her--weird, definitely--and her rapture of this topic was getting him amped about it as well. When she huffed he grinned a little, it was almost unlike her (well the 'her' he had gotten to know so far) and looked up from his text book.

"A break sounds....very good." Concentrating on work was definitely not Jeff's strong suit. The mention of hunger, his stomach put on a noisy performance which cause him to pat it. "I actually am." She then mentioned food.

Oh. My. God.

He nodded his head. "You are the best."

The best way to a man's heart was through his stomach after all.

Juniper smiled and giggled at his compliment. Sure, they weren't actually in a room, and maybe it was corny, but a compliment was a compliment, and she let her eyes drop modestly. "Thank you," she murmured shyly. Amos told her she had a nice smile, but it was totally different coming from someone that wasn't your best friend. Especially if you were developing a crush on said person.

"Okay," she nodded in reply, glad that he was willing to help out, even if he wasn't an expert on the subject. Just the fact that he didn't try to get her to do all the work was refreshing and pleasant, and allowed Juniper to have more fun with it than she had really expected. He was sweet, if shy, and she caught the occasional thought from him, but ignored them for the most part; she wasn't about to point out every little thing she got from him. That would just be rude.

"Good," she breathed, glad he wanted a break as well. When she worked by herself, she had a habit of working until she was done; but with this, she didn't want to make either of them work too hard. Not to mention, she sort of wanted to have some time to just talk too, without the pressure of getting the project done.

Her smile widened into a grin, and she tilted her head, letting a few stray curls cover her face as she pulled out the food. "You might not think so once you see what it is," she told him meekly. It wasn't like it was horror food or anything, but the fact that she was vegan seemed to throw people off sometimes. She really, really hoped Jeff wouldn't mind.

"Um, I have some pita bread, and hummus, and some apples and almonds. Oh, and these," she added, pulling out a package of vegan cookies she had picked up at the store the other day. "It's not a lot, but it's healthy! Well, except for the cookies," she continued, laughing. She set out the food and motioned to him to take whatever he wanted; she went ahead and grabbed a slice of pita bread, ripping off pieces so she could dip it in the hummus. "So, um, what do you usually do when you're not studying or getting snacks in the middle of the night?" Juniper asked playfully, bringing up that night when their friendship/crush?ship started. She still grinned about it.

The thing about food with Jeff, was that there really was not anything bad that he could not eat. He loved any sort of food, no matter the nationality. He could eat anything and everything; spicy, seasoned, with meat, without meat, vegetables, fruits, grains, and defintely sweet. His absolutely favorite types of food, though? Definitely Korean. He missed it, and whenever he did get his hands on some traditional Korean food, he is back home with his parents and biological parents.

"Pit-ah, pit-a...Peeta bread?" He asked, not confident with his pronunciation at all, as he examined it. He wondered exactly what made it different from the other breads. He knew whole wheat was made with more wheat grains, and in banana bread there were bits of banana, but he had no idea what 'pita' was. Was it a plant? Some sort of fruit? The hummus, he had heard of before, some sorta Middle East dish, but he had not tried it yet.

He safely went for an apple as he watched her dip the bread into the hummus. She seemed to enjoy it, so he probably would to. However, he didn't bodly rip off a piece of bread and dip it into the hummus, he simply bit into his apple. "Thank you, for the food." He would need to take her out somewhere, to pay back for it.

Then he blushed like a complete fool and looked away. The idea of taking her....on a real date.....seemed like such a good idea, but it set his heart spluddering and his palms sweaty. He would really need to get a handle on himself and...well not act like such a fool first. He was much too insecure to do that now.

"Where are you from?" He decided to ask. Perhaps if she started talking, Jeff could pay attention to that, and not think silly things like asking her out on a date.

Juniper got a hint of his thoughts then - apparently food was an important part of Jeff's life. She grinned; food, she could provide. Korean food? Hmm. She would have to look it up sometime and try to surprise him. She was a pretty good cook - she might be able to come up with something.

"Pita bread," she repeated, laughing lightly as he tested out the word. "I really like it. It's just kind of like... Pocket bread. But you don't have to try it, if you don't want to," she reassured him as he went for an apple. She was just glad to provide for him; this really was starting to feel more and more like a date. It made her giddy. "You're very welcome," she replied with a smile, reaching out to touch his hand for a brief moment. Then Juniper grabbed a small handful of almonds and started munching on them, gazing out over the water.

As she sat there eating, she got another reading from his mind, but this was quite different from the first. Was he.... Thinking about asking her on a real date? Juniper's eyes widened, but she fought against shooting him a look; she didn't want him to know she had heard what he was thinking, she didn't want to embarrass him. Still, she couldn't help the wide grin that slowly lit up her face. He liked her! He really did! This had never happened to Juniper before, and she was really tempted to bring up the subject just so it wouldn't possibly slip out of her hands.

Before she could, though, he asked her a question, and she leaned back so she could gaze at him out of the corner of her eye. "I'm originally from Eugene, Oregon," she told him, motioning vaguely to the west. "Nice place. Very eco-conscious." She paused, then added quietly,"I miss it." She missed the hippies, the Saturday Market, the Douglas firs. Pilot Ridge was nice, too, but it just didn't compare. "What about you?" she asked curiously.

The way to a man's heart was through his stomach spoke volumes to Jeff--now he wasn't the chauvinist that believed all a ladies' job was to prepare the food--Jeff just loved food and for someone to be able to make food that was awesome was just as great for him, as if someone loved musicians and dated someone in a band....a weird analogy, but it made sense to Jeff. He took another bite of the apple as he eyed the bread. Pocket bread still didn't really offer him any explanation to what it was, but after his bite, he reached for some and broke off a small corner.

After dipping it into the hummus he slipped it into his mouth and tilted his head to the side as he tasted it. He had not the words, but to him Pita bread was a lot like a biscuit, and the Hummus was some weird condiment equivalent. It certainly wasn't bad. He smiled a little and nodded at Juniper, to show he liked it.

The idea of taking her out on a date....he could take a walk with her around the town of Pilot Ridge--from what he had seen, it was a nice little town with local businesses--and maybe stop in on some of the thrift stores and cafe's and eat a lunch or a dinner. There was a movie theater, so they could also go there. Did that still count as a date? He wasn't sure, maybe he could ask someone.

He blushed faintly at the thought and prayed she couldn't hear him. To him, she was just looking out at the water....with quite a large smile on her face. Crap, maybe she did hear him? But she wasn't angry....so could that be a good thing?

Oregon. He wasn't sure exactly where that was, but knew that was an American state, and wasn't any where near Vermont. He smiled and nodded. "I bet it is nice there." He had no idea, but she seemed to like it there.

"I am from Seoul....South Korea." He smiled faintly as he remembered. "Well, from Camp Stanley--it is one of the American Military bases there. My adoptive parents are in the Army...but my biological parents are from Seoul." He scratched the back of his head, some people acted weird around him after they found out he was adopted, but to him, he loved both sets of his parents. One set brought him into the world and loved him enough to give him to someone who could take care of him better, and the other were unable to have one of their own and adopted, and saved an infant from poverty. He wasn't mad at either one.

Well, he had been mad when his parents moved him to America, away from his biological parents, but that was the military's fault, not theirs. He sure did miss South Korea, though.

As Jeff reached over to break off a piece of the pita bread to dip in the hummus, Juniper glanced expectantly at him, hoping he would like it. As he smiled and nodded, she grinned at him. He didn't hate it! "It's one of my favorite snacks," she offered, taking another piece for herself. Ah, she really did love food. Something they shared, only her diet was quite a bit more restricted because of her vegan tendencies.

She continued to eat, pausing as more thoughts came to her from Jeff - a walk around town, thrift stores, dinner, movie. It sounded... Perfect. Juniper pressed her lips together to keep from grinning so much, but it was a useless move, because she continued to anyway. This was all just... Perfect. The fact that he was thinking about these things made her usual conservative nature about romance and relationships fade just a little, and she was about to say something until he spoke. "It is," she replied in a mild daze, still thinking about things other than her hometown.

South Korea? Whoa. That was a long way from here, and Juniper's eyes widened slightly as she looked over at him. She listened as he told his story, munching quietly on almonds as he talked. "It sounds like you have quite a history," she replied when he was done, leaning back on her hands to mull over the new information. "My mom took care of me and my sister, after my dad left," she told him, going deeper into her own past since he had offered his. "She still lives in Oregon, but she's moving here soon. I'm really excited!" She grinned again, tilting her head back to look up at the canopy above them. She couldn't wait to be able to spend time with her again.

There was a slight pause in the conversation, and Juniper's heart picked up a few notches as she tilted her head back down to gaze at Jeff. He was so quiet and kind and willing to help. Not to mention, very cute. She trailed her eyes back up to the branches above. She had to say it. "I really like you a lot, Jeff," she murmured quietly, but loud enough for him to hear. "I'm really glad we met." She folded her hands in her lap then, waiting for his reply with hardly-contained nervousness and hope. If what she had heard had been right - she thought he would respond positively.

This emotional build up to maybe....asking her out on a date was turning the heat up, body temperature wise. He fiddled with his watch, trying to distract himself. He was trying to stay focused on their conversation, but he was having a hard time thinking of anything else but this imaginary date. She probably didn't even like him like that, why would she? He had such a mental handicap, she was probably just really being nice, being his partner for this project.

Yeah. That had to be it; she was taking pity on him. He internally sighed, outwardly he munched on the apple he had picked and really considered not bringing up that date idea of his. She mentioned 'quite his history,' and he smiled a little. Yeah, Jeff's upbringing was quite unconventional and adoptions were often considered taboo. However, Jeff grew up knowing his real parents weren't old enough when they had him to really take care of him; just as well, Korean tradition dictated that his parents honored his grandparents order to put him up for adoption because of that fact they weren't old enough to care for him properly. His grandparents were nice enough old farts, but that was something Jeff kinda did hold against them. He loved his adoptive parents, of course, but still. That is kind of a mean thing to do to your grandchild.

"I am sorry about your dad." Jeff always had more parents than he could really keep up with, and he could hardly imagine if one of them just left....he would feel like something was missing--much like he has since he moved to America and can't really talk to his biologicals. He smiled along with her at the news her mother was moving from Oregon to Pilot Ridge, he supposed it really was a long way away. Jeff's parents were just nearly about to retire, and once they do, they will probably stay in Florida, but get a condo on a the beach, like his momma always wanted.

Her sudden admittance that she liked him....like liked him, his eyes kinda widened and he blushed. "I am...really glad we met too." He stammered, not really prepared for that. His sudden lack of confidence about asking her on a date vanished, and before he could chicken out,

"Wouldyouliketogooutwithme? Likeonadate?" Ug, too fast. He said it too fast. "Urh, a date? We could see a, um, movie? Or something?" Gosh. Why couldn't he do this the right way!

Juniper could hardly contain her giddy feelings as the thoughts from Jeff about a date grew stronger, but she sensed along with it a sense of insecurity, the fear that she wasn't interested in him like he was in her. She wanted to say something, to relieve his doubts, but she also didn't want him to know she was listening to what she knew was supposed to be something very private. She would make this work out somehow.

Because she most definitely was not taking pity on him. Heck, she was surprised he was still interested in her that way at all, after how much they had talked. She had never been on a date in her life - she just assumed most people were a little put off by just how into nature and how incredibly bubbly she was most of the time. Of course, she wasn't going to change for anyone, but sometimes it was a little disheartening. Nevertheless, she wasn't going to complain - she had Amos, and a ton of other friends, and she couldn't ask for more.

But she still wouldn't say no to a date with a cute boy.

She shrugged at his words. "It's okay. My mom did a great job raising us, even if my dad wasn't around. My sister and I grew up to be really independent and sure of ourselves, you know?" Having just a mom tended to make that happen, she assumed. Although, her mother was quite unconventional - Juniper got her extreme love and devotion to Mother Nature from her. Willow, her sister, was a bit more bitter and reserved; their dad had left the family when she was born, which had always been hard on the girl. But Juniper loved her with all her heart.

Juniper knew her cheeks were probably flushing quite a lot too; she had never admitted to liking someone before. It was only because she knew his thoughts that she had managed to do so now. His reply brought a happy grin to her face, and she let a few stray curls cover her cheek as she dipped her head, feeling her heart pound faster in her chest. Now what...?

Oh!

"Yes!" she replied in a squeak, before realizing she sounded way too eager, and, clearing her throat, settled back down from where she had sort of shot sitting straight up on the blanket.
