Waiting (Reggie)

[Caleb Green]

Caleb wasn’t able to help his good mood. Then again, I doubt anybody would be able to after having, what he considered to be, a very successful first encounter. And what do you do when that happens? Obviously call one of your oldest friends to get together so you can talk about it? And other things too of course. Cale had missed Reggie after all. And they had loads to talk about.

Walking up to the lake, he was glad he didn’t have any more appointments for they day. He was free. And hoped that Reggie wouldn’t have any afternoon classes. Picking a sunny place on the grass, he flopped down and laid back, pulling his cell phone from his pocket, sliding it open. So, there’s this girl I know, her name is Reggie. She’s horrifyingly beautiful. If you see her, will you please tell her that I’m laying in the grass near the dock, waiting for when I might be lucky enough to behold such a creature.

As he hit send, he chuckled to himself, putting his phone back into his pocket, and he closed his eyes, a smile still on his face.

"Yep, RC and I will be flying in soon. Yep. Tickets all bought. Yep. Oh sorry, yes mami. No te preocupes. Te amo. Tell Carter and papi I love them muchly. Yes mami. I love you bye!"

Reggie shook her head in amusement, a chuckle escaping her throat as she pressed the red button to end the call. As she pulled the phone up to her lips, she closed her eyes and smiled. She missed her parents but lucky thing she was seeing them again soon!

Just as her phone left her lips, it vibrated and she looked at it to find that she had a message. It left her in giggles as she walked in the direction of the lake. What a major flirt, Caleb was.

She sent him back a text saying: I don't think this friend of yours would appreciate being called horrifyingly beautiful. But I will tell her her dork or a friend is waiting for her. She added a wink emoticon at the end and slipped her phone into her bag.

Reaching the lake, she craned her neck to search for the dark haired older meta. A couple minutes later, she found herself grinning at the man. "Caleb." She sighed softly and waved him down. "Sorry I'm late, hon."

Feeling his phone vibrate in his pocket, he dug in, and got it, reading his friend’s response. Scoffing at it, he decided not to dignify it with a response. Well, not until to found him at least. Looking over to where he heard his name from, he waved, and then pulled himself up from the spot of lying on the grass so he could properly greet her with a tight hug. “Oh no, you aren’t late, don’t worry. I’m just a bit early.”

“And ya’ know, if you aren’t careful about insulting me, I won’t tell you about this guy. Whose number I got, thank you veeery much.” Of course, she would know better. Cale would tell her all about him. Because he was bubbling. And his constant wide smile should tell her that.

“But first I wanna hear about you. What’s new? How are classes going?” He sat back down in the grass, patting a spot next to him. “I live an endlessly boring life between the hospital and living in an empty apartment. I must live vicariously through you.” Of course, there was a very good reason to hope that it wouldn't be so boring for long.

"Oh! Well then." Reggie shrugged her shoulders and dropped down beside him, careful to push her skirt down her thighs. Looking up at Caleb with big round eyes, her lips fell apart a bit when she heard him talk about a guy. "No. No way, ooh smooth operator!" She leaned towards him and poked his ribs. "You wouldn't deny me this, Caleb. You know I love to find out about romances."

Reggie forgot that Caleb wasn't always so forthcoming about the guys he went out with. Especially not in this almost shy fashion. Only time would tell of the seriousness between those two but right now, Reggie was certain it was going to be a wonderful story that will be filled with intrigue and lots of sparks.

"Nothing new much. RC has been such a doll with all the planning. He hasn't missed one cake tasting or location scouting. Good lord I adore that boy." Reggie cupped one cheek and sighed dreamily.

"Now enough about me. Tell me about number guy." She reached out to squeeze Caleb's arm.

Chuckling, Caleb nodded. “Yeah, no, I wouldn’t keep it from you. Especially considering how cute he is.” Because he was, Elliot was so cute. “Though, I did kinda trick him into giving me his number.” He said with a chuckle. Sure, it was kinda shameless. But whatever. He’d come out ahead in the end, getting the number after all.

“Ooooh.” When the talk turned wedding related, Caleb sprang up from his laying down position. “Yeah? Do you guys have any final details? Do you have a date yet?” Cale was so happy for his friend, that she’d found somebody and they were getting married. And the pair was so cute together. “Now, Reggie, when the big day comes, you have to promise not to be staring at me. I know I’m pretty, but you have to be looking at R.C. He’s the one you’ll be marrying after all.” Though, he knew that wouldn’t be the case. R.C. was quite the looker himself.

Smiling, Cale looked at his hands that he was wringing in his lap. “Well, remember that guy I told you about on campus? The really cute guy that I kinda stalked but didn’t talk to? Well, I saw him at a coffee shop and… I went for it. I started talking to him.” There was a smile on Caleb’s face as he spoke that he was trying not to let get too big, but was failing miserably. “He’s from Ireland. And his name is Elliot. And he’s pretty good with electronics and stuff.” Which, as anybody who knew Caleb, was perfect for him as he was awful with those things.

"Oh Cale." Reggie chuckled, ruffling his hair a little bit. He was charming enough as a guy and Reggie often thought that she could have fallen for any of his charms if she didn't already know where his affections lie.

Giggling, she blushed a little as she talked about the wedding. "We've got the bridesmaids and the groomsmen's colour theme down. The cake and the dress. Oh God, Cale. You have to see the dress." She squeezed Caleb's arm and bounced on the spot. "But the date all depends on RC. That's the one thing he wants control over. And I'm fine with that because he's given me free reign over everything else." She giggled slightly.

"Oh my, I didn't think about that." Reggie teased. "I must resist, yes. I'll try very hard not to let my eye wander." She laughed and patted Caleb's shoulder with a shake of her head. And he was right about RC. He was a looker. And Reggie was just lucky that face came with a huge heart.

Nodding as Caleb built up to the climax, and when he did, Reggie squealed with a laugh. "Yes! Knew you had it in you." She grinned, throwing her arms around his neck, hugging him tightly before laughing at his self-deprecating joke. "Yes! Finally someone who is qualified to teach you. And someone cute too. That is a good incentive. I can hang up my hat finally." She laughed before trying to act serious. "So when's the date?"

Cale chuckled and ducked his head when Reggie ruffled his hair. It made him feel like a kid, but that he minded the affectionate touch. Actually, since growing up and leaving certain behaviors behind, he was fonder of showing affection than ever before.

“Oh yeah? What colors are you guys doing? Are you having the groomsmen and bridesmaid match? Or just coordinate?” Perhaps in another life Caleb had been a party planner. But more likely, he was just excited for his friend’s wedding. And then she mentioned the dress, her dress. “Reggie, oh my god, you have to show me before the wedding, ok? Oooh, I bet you look so beautiful! What kind of dress is it? Do you have a picture on your phone?”

Laughing, Caleb nodded. “Yes, you must be careful. I mean, I look pretty good in a suit. Just sayin’.” Yeah, confidence was nothing that Caleb was lacking. But he was just kidding now. He knew that he wasn’t everybody’s bread and butter.

Reggie’s laugh was infectious and kept Caleb laughing right along with her as he hugged her back. “Yeah, I hope so. I mean, I triiied to warn him that it’s like my secret power, destruction of all electronics, but he doesn’t seem to believe me. So, we’ll see how it works.” And then she asked the question. He thought maybe she’d give him grief for his answer. “Well…. I haven’t called him yet. But I’m going to! I don’t wanna be that creepy guy who calls the next day, ya’ know? Not… to mention I’m a little nervous.”

"They're going to co-ordinate and the girls will be wearing this soft grey halter neck dress. It's seriously classy and gives you room to move. The guys will be wearing light blue. You are going to be in the bridal party, aren't you?" Reggie asked with hopeful eyes and a smile. "The picture does no justice. You're definitely going to have to come to my final fitting." She nodded enthusiastically, hoping he would be there.

Reggie laughed at Caleb's confidence. She had no doubt the man looked good in anything he wore. Even now, in his shirt and jeans, he looked so well-kept.

"You really should try and work through that. Yep." She nodded seriously before breaking out into laughter. She never could be that serious when it came to Caleb. Though his next words did make her give him a noice of disapproval. "Cale." She elongated the syllable to his name. "You shouldn't be though. I'm pretty sure only a dummy would refuse you anything." She cupped his cheeks and squeezed them a little with a smile.

"Oh, I just can't wait to meet him! He goes to U of V, right?"

“Oh god, the gray and blue will look wonderful together. Ugh, I’m so excited for you, Reggie.” Caleb smiled wide, honestly excited for her and to see it all. He was so happy for his friend, having found somebody she loved and who loved her in return. And then she asked him to be in the bridal party. A huge smile broke out on his face and he laughed. “Holy shit, are you serious?” He grabbed his friend and hugged her tight. “Of course I will be. Oh my god. Do you even really need to ask?” It was truly an honor to Cale, her asking him to be a part of her day. Cupping her face, he kissed his forehead and laughed as he let her go. “You’re so damn adorable, Reg. I can’t stand it. And of course I’ll be there for the final fitting, I wouldn’t miss it for the world.” She just given him the best reason to be floating on cloud nine.

Laughing along with her, he nodded and shrugged. “Man, I’m twenty-four now. If I still can’t figure out electronics, I’m pretty sure I’m a lost cause. But Elliot seems confident in being able to teach me. Or at least fix what I break.” But Caleb wasn’t entirely sure. It wasn’t that he doubted the younger man, but so few had ever been able to fix those high-techy stuff he broke. Cale smiled sheepishly when Reggie complimented him. “Nah. I’m not all that great. I just… trying to make up for stuff now, ya’ know?” Of course she knew. That was one of the downfalls of having been friends with Caleb for so long, she’d seen him when he had hit his lowest point. “I’m mooostly afraid that I’ll call him and he’ll be like ‘Caleb who?’ and then all that flirting would’ve been nothing.” Cale shook his head, laughing at himself despite the ball of nerves in his stomach.

“Yeah, U of V. That’s where I first saw him, on campus. I didn’t tell him I recognized him though…. God, I sound like such a damn creeper now.” Caleb facepalmed at himself, wondering why he hadn’t just been honest.

"Thank you, Cale." She blushed lightly before squealing when the older boy cupped her face. She gripped his wrists and closed her eyes to the kiss. The compliment she received made her laugh and she cheered when he accepted her request. It was going to be a wonderful affair, having her best friend and her mother seeing her in her dress. She was going to have to make sure she wasn't wearing any make-up because tears are definitely going to be a big thing when that happens.

Laughing at his 'lost cause' comment, Reggie shook her head. "Maybe being taught by a cute guy would be incentive enough for you to do better." She teased before smiling sympathetically at his next words, knowing exactly what he meant. She may have not seen a good side of Caleb once in the past but she wouldn't have been a good friend if she didn't stay. And she wouldn't have seen him grow so much more now. And that was something she wouldn't want to miss for the world.

"The fact that you've gotten to this point in life just proves that you're an awesome guy, Cale. We both know you are capable of a lot." She cupped his face with both of her hands and grinned. She really did love Cale and he really needed to stop looking down on himself because he had no reason to. Not anymore.

"And what you would have done before this is no better. I say being a creeper has its merits. Sometimes." She bit her lower lip as she realised she had also been one when she first met RC. She laughed and squeezed Caleb's shoulder and gave him a big smile. "You know what we should do? We should go get ice cream to celebrate our little victories. You for finally talking to your cutie and me having planned out half of my wedding already." She grinned.
