Well, this was going to be a first. Alexis tried to breathe normally and smile at those she passed in the hall, but some small part of her feared they all knew where she was going and were judging her. How pathetic is it to feel like a freak at a school for freaks she berated herself. Besides, lots of perfectly normal people saw therapists, and probably most of the people who went to this school. She was sure not all of them had enjoyed their manifestation as much as she did, and she was lucky to have such a supportive family. That only made it all the more humiliating though. Nothing traumatic had happened to her, she was perfectly well adjusted and happy with her life. She was being sent to the school psychologist, or was it psychiatrist? What was the difference again? One of them prescribed medicine or something? Either way, she was being sent to the school shrink because she was stupid. No one put it like that of course, well no one except Gwen, what did her brother see in that girl? Never mind...Gwen was not someone worth wasting thoughts on right now...concentrate on the problem at hand Alexis reminded herself.
She did well in all her language and arts classes, she even managed to pass her science classes with a little help from tutors, but math was impossible for her. She could count, and add, and do basic multiplication and division, but when Fred went to the store to buy 47 watermelons, all she could think about was why would anyone need that many watermelons? Was he throwing a party? It would have to be the blow out of the century. Maybe he was shopping for Gallagher? If so then all those watermelons were just going to be smashed and wasted so what was the point of it all? Then there was geometry. That is when she really lost it. She couldn't prove any proofs. Tutor after tutor tried to help her, but she never understood it. She was good with words and letters so why was it the word and letter math problems that gave her the most trouble? Finally, her teacher had suggested she go see Dr. Neville. She must have some kind of "block". Yeah, something blocking the natural intelligence that came so easily to the rest of her family. Her parents were both numbers people and her brother had always gotten straight A's, but here was Alexis the idiot who couldn't do a simple Geometry proof.
Alexis wondered what Dr. Neville would be like. She had seen him around school, but had never really talked to him. Was he good at math? Was he going to try to relate to her and tell her about his own struggles or was he going to lecture her on what she was supposed to be doing? And were they going to have to talk about math the whole session? Ugh. This was not going to be an enjoyable experience. It was a beautiful spring day and she was stuck inside talking about math.
Alexis reached the door to his office which was slightly ajar, and knocked, rapping three nervous quick taps, somewhat hoping he wasn't there or was busy with someone else and she could reschedule. That happened didn't it? Appointments we rescheduled if another patient was having an emergency. Surely, people had non-math related emergencies they needed to talk out with the doctor all the time.
