Studying....for a friend? (Open)

Maria was on her way to the library. She had a ton of homework to do. She knew she shouldn't have left it until the last minute. At the time it seemed like a good idea. Not so much of a good idea now. She made her way to a table close to the books. She took her pen and paper out. She got a couple of books and began her homework.

A hour and more then a dozen books later Maria had half her homework done. She had done the longer essay's first. She stood up and stretched. She looked around and saw only a few people around. 'I bet a lot of kids finished their homework earlier' she thought to herself, sighing. She looked at the clock and saw she had about two hours until lunch. She was getting ready to finish the rest when she looked up and saw someone standing in front of her.

Piper walked into the library. She was about to head to the fiction section to find a new book when she noticed Maria working on a pile of homework. Piper snuck past her because she wasn't in the modd to talk and take the risk of making a conversation really awkward. She really preferred being alone and snuggling up with a good book. As she browsed the shelves, Piper started thinking about the time Maria helped her when she was having trouble in the training rooms. This seemed to be the perfect opportunity to return the favor.

Piper went to the library's front desk so she could check out the book and save it for later. There were about two hours until lunch so she could read it then. She approached Maria's table.

"Hi, I thought I could... well... help you with your work. It seems like a bunch and I definitely owe you one." Piper sat down and grabbed a science textbook. "So, what needs to be done?"

Maria didn't expect for Piper to help her with her homework. She help Piper out because it was the right thing to do. 'Well biology and art aren't my best subjects. I guess it would be easier then just me struggling get to get this done' she thought. "Hey. The only thing I need to finish is Biology and Art. Neither are my best subject. I finished everything else. I can't believe I let it go so late. I really have to break the habit. Five years here and I still do everything the last minute" said Maria. She really needed to stop doing everything last minute, including studying for a final or a test.

Piper was glad she could be useful. She wanted to be friends with Maria and she was pretty sure this was what friends do. Piper put back the textbook since art was her strongest subject and she was feeling creative.

"So what do you need to do for art? Draw, paint, sculpt, design, I can do it all. I won't make it too complex so the teacher believes you made it." Piper laughed at her own joke. She was surprised this was going well. Usually when she tried to talk to people she would stumble over her own words or ask a way to personal question like "Oh I notice that your underwear is showing. It's really cute, where do you get it?" The person would either leave, cry, or start rumors. Maria seemed nice and could hopefully take a joke.

Maria was trying her hardest not to laugh at the joke Piper made. A lot of people might take offense but not Maria. She already knew she was doomed to fail art. She had to turn her head so she didn't burst out laughing. It was a library after all. When she finally controlled her laughter she turned back and said "I have to make a design. I think it has to be put on our backpacks not quite sure through. I trend to zone out. The teacher just bores me to death. She didn't say what kind of design through" said Maria. She looked at Piper. She wondered if she just made a friend. She remembered what Piper joked about and burst out laughing. So what if she gets funny looks. The joke was funny to her. "I do believe I have a new friend. Sadly your joke was right through. I expect to fail art. How someone can be that bad I don't know" she said.

The minute Maria half explained the assignment, Piper started thinking. Her plan was to think of an idea she would use and then slowly simplify and dumb it down until it could pass as something a mildly creative student would turn in. Piper really wanted to help because a friend was not something she easily came across and she was not letting this one slip through the cracks. She ripped a piece of paper out of Maria's notebook, grabbed a pencil, and got to work.

The draft turned out pretty well. Piper designed a patch that had the Hammel crest and the words "Everyone's Special" written in script below. She was content and thought it would get Maria at least a B. Since Maria kept emphasizing how bad she was at art, a B would probably seem pretty good to her. Piper slid over the paper and grabbed the biology textbook.

While maria looked over the art assignment, Piper peeked at her planner and checked what the assignment was. She had to sketch the anatomy of a frog and label all of the parts. Piper started to do a rough sketch of a frog. Once that was done, she flipped through the textbook until she found a diagram. The first thing she saw was the word anus labeling the frog's butt. Piper always cracked up when she read professional terms for private parts and this was no exception. The librarian shushed her and Piper's face went red.

Maria looked over the drawing Piper made. It would get her a passing grade, through it made her feel bad. She had to admit Piper had a thing for art. She smiled and said "Thanks. Its a great drawing. Ever think about going professional or something". As she looked up she saw Piper laughing and the librarian shushing her. That made Maria break out in giggles. She would never laugh that loud. After all she loved libraries too much. After controlling herself she asked "What has you cracking up?"

Piper had to think about the question before answering. She had never really thought about growing up and getting a job before.

"Maybe as a hobby. You know illustrate some books after I'm done counting my money." Piper joked. She really needed to email her parents about her time at Hammel. They would be ecstatic to here she was being social and even had a friend.

"I hope the teacher likes it. I would hate for you to get a bad grade because of me. But I hope she doesn't like it too much either since she might ask you to join the art club." Piper really enjoyed talking and joking with people and she wished her social skills started to develop earlier in her life.

Piper slid over the textbook and pointed out the anus. Piper started cracking up again. Every time she thought about it, her sense of humor would take over. The librarian shushed her again so she tried to hold it in. Piper took back the textbook and started working on the diagram. She decided to move closer to Maria so she could teach her the parts of the frog and Maria would actually learn something.

When Maria saw what made Piper laugh she just shook her head. "No way am I joining the art club. Even if I did draw that myself, which that will never happen, I wouldn't. So don't say that" she said. She hated anything with art so her even going near someone from the art club, besides Piper, was zero. As Piper laughed and the librarian shushed her again, Maria could only shake her head. She was glad that she had Piper to help her out through. If she never showed up, who knows what her art teacher would be getting.
