It was not even Meiko's second week of school and she already found herself longing for a return to that miserable crate on the miserable freighter crossing that miserable Pacific Ocean. At least there, between fits of succumbing to sea sickness, she had enough time to play Fire Emblem: Awakening. Okay, maybe the twenty day period that she called 'hell on earth' wasn't favorable to her first week of school… but her adjustment period has been--well, rough to say the least.
And today didn't seem as though it would stray from the course. Many transfer students went through a placement test before officially starting with their education at Hammel--a series of tests and drills meant to determine an incoming student's over all mental capacity as well as their ability to control their given powers. Needless to say Meiko has had better outings… a combination of nerves and sleep deprivation made for a very interesting entrance exam.
"You're ability to hold on to this singularity field is extremely impressive, Ms. Tanahashi. Can you demonstrate your ability to alter the level of gravity?"
The proctor seemed a bit condescending early on, so it was nice to be complimented by such a distinguished, mustachioed gentleman. A familiar confidence began coursing through her, and she nodded at her proctor.
"Sure, no problem."
Famous last words. Meiko squinted her eyes, focusing heavily on the black 'orb of broken physics'… but she lost that focus for a split second, throwing off her mental calculations just long enough to cause both her and her proctor to bash their heads on the floor. She silently cursed to herself as the proctor, Mr. Monier as his name tag indicated, struggled to take notes, obviously highlighting her inadequacy.
"Sorry!" The words couldn't even escape her lips before she through the singularity in reverse, causing the man to float upward like a feather above a fan. Mr. Monier continued to take notes, and a look across his face that could only be interpreted as disappointment.
"Kuso… kuso… kuso!" Meiko mutters under her breath, "I apologize!" Dipping out of the private room and causing the man to hit the ground with an abrupt thud, she escaped into the training facility, leaning against the wall and sliding to the ground in demoralizing defeat.
Meiko then reached into a pocket to retrieve what appeared to be a very old one yen coin. Her favorite teacher at Eisai taught her an exercise a long time ago to help her learn to control and balance a field of singularity by moving the little coin up and down. She could use the practice now more than ever…
Focusing her mind on the floor in front of her right knee, she develops a small singularity field--but this one was a little different. Where as the others tend to be dark voids, this one had a pink tint to it. Raising a brow at this conundrum, she shrugged it off and continued practicing.
