It took Dylan about three hours of debating with himself before he finally picked up the courage to send Idalia a message about this weekend.

Their date.

He still couldn't believe he had actively asked for her phone number.

Either way, there he was, typing away the message.

Hey. This is Dylan. We met at the gym the other day? I was wondering if you were still interested in going to the jazz club with me this weekend?

And before he chickened out, he pressed the send button and slid his phone over the counter, blowing out a sigh of relief.

Idalia’s head popped up from her pillow and in a panicked rush she slammed her hand into her alarm, but it had no effect on silencing the sound. When that had no effect she sat bolt up and snatched her phone expecting some sort of crisis. ‘Dylan’ it read and Idalia allowed herself to fall back into bed. She checked the clock, it was just a little past 3 in the afternoon, oh well her alarm was going to go off in about twenty minutes anyways. That did not by any means mean she was getting out of bed yet.

She found herself smiling to herself as she read the message. She started to text an affirmative then realized it was Thursday. That meant she had Saturday and Sunday this weekend. And she was still on nights. Idalia sighed and replied.

To Dylan:
Hi Dylan! I remember, how are you? I would love to, but I’m working nights this weekend Does next weekend work?

Idalia sent it then paused and typed quickly.

To Dylan:
Unless tomorrow is an option?

Too eager? Was the frowny face too much? Idalia raised a weary hand to her forehead, damn this schedule.

When the reply came in, Dylan's hopes soared high before seeing the answer. It popped just a little bit but the emoticon did give him a new hope. At least she wasn't saying no completely!

And when the next message came in, Dylan's smile erupted and in a rush, he typed an eager reply of

Of course!

In his excitement, he sent it immediately and then he backtracked and slammed his phone on his forehead. Way to go, eager beaver.

I hope? Um, if it's not too much of a rush for you?

When he sent it, he started hitting his forehead with his fist. Why did he even bother with all this social interactions when it just comes out so damn awkward?

Idalia sighed with relief so glad he wasn’t put off by her initial rejection. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to go, she really did! Hopefully it helped her case that when she met him she was coming off the night shift, well, granted that was a weird week but hey at least he met her knowing she had odd hours.

She smiled and was about to enter a repeat of her message about Friday when she got another message. “Pull yourself together Idalia!” She cried at herself as she got a fluttery heart when the phone buzzed.

Her heart skipped a beat. He hoped? Hoped what? Rush? Oh no! Was she rushing into this? Did he already feel pressured?

To Dylan:
If that’s too soon we can wait until next weekend. Sorry about the wonky schedules.

Her message came through and he panicked a little. Did he say something wrong in his previous message? Dylan went through his phone and checked before blowing a sigh of relief. No, she read it wrong. Didn't she?

Oh no, not too soon. Tomorrow's perfect. And you're fine. I understand completely. May I pick you up?

To Dylan:
Sure, what time?

Idalia let out a squeals of excitement and Ike jumped up on the bed called by her enthusiasm. She hugged her overgrown puppy as he licked her face. “Ike! I’ve got a date!” She pushed him off and got out of bed unable to stay stationary any longer. She did a little dance and looked at Ike who was waggling his rear in the air feeding off her excitement. “Oh God!” Idalia dropped her phone on the table and darted to her closet. “What am I going to wear?” She turned and asked the dog who merely cocked his head with interest.

Not expecting a reply this positive, Dylan had to look away from the phone and then back to it before he realised that Idalia had indeed agreed to meet. Earlier than the fixed date. Sure, the response itself was a bit lacklustre. No exclamation points or what not but still, it was an agreement. And Dylan patted himself on the back for making a girl agree to be his date for one night.

After sending her a time and asking her for her address, Dylan put the phone down on his nightstand and grinned to himself.

What in the hell did I get myself into?
