For whatever reason, after a big meal Charlie always felt sleepy.. even if lunch was the time of day when she usually finally started waking up. Given that, the wing-bearing girl had trained herself to eat more like a bird than a person.. An apple here, a granola bar there, maybe a slice of pizza or a sandwich at lunch. Never too much. Not only did Charlie have a figure to maintain, but she already got enough sideways glances because she - apparently unlike the other pixie-people at the school - almost always had her wings out. It had been a month and she had yet to see another person with wings like hers, even though she'd been told that there were a few others similar to her. Knowing they existed helped a little, but it was still a bit embarrassing to be the only person she could see most of the time that had wings.. let alone giant green butterfly wings.
For the most part, Charlie assumed people saw her as a pair of wings with a shy girl attached, not the other way around, and that was a large part of the reason that she tended to stare at the grass, the sidewalks, or the clouds as she walked. Charlie walked a lot. Walking kept muscles loose and made it easier to stand having her wings put away longer. Some of the time she tried to avoid the more populated areas but it was just a Thursday.. Surely the courtyard couldn't be too crowded?
Wrong. It was fairly crowded.. Being that it was more crowded than Charlie expected, she allowed a glance out across... and something caught her eye. She did a double, then triple-take, vision narrowing in on.. some girl's ribs. No, not ribs, markings.. Markings that looked an awful lot like.. "Wings?" Could that be one of the other pixie wing people? Finally?? Crowd or not, Charlie picked up her pace significantly, making a very zig-zaggy beeline for the girl with the revealing shirt and tattoos... She didn't want to get too close to anyone on her way.. Controlling the dust her wings naturally put off wasn't exactly effortless yet and she didn't want to bump anyone and have them tripping for the next hour.
Eventually (the amount of time it took likely seemed a lot longer to her than it actually was) Charlie would be standing next to the girl.. and be relatively sure that her tattoos were, in fact, wings.. So with a nervous swallow, she reached over and tapped the girl on the arm, waiting for her to turn before saying a word.. "Um.. Hi? My name is Charlie.. I'm pretty new here.. I'm so sorry if I'm wasting your time and you can tell me to go away if you don't want to talk to me but I saw your tattoos and they looked like wings and I wondered if you were like me and if so if you could maybe explain a few things or just give me some advice when you aren't busy--" Well that had come out a bit faster than intended.. Out of breath.. Gasp. "But if you are busy or I'm wrong or you just don't want me to bother you or something I can go away I've just been trying to find the other people with these wings... um.... Heh.." Her shoulders slumped and even her wings seemed to wilt slightly. "I, uh.. I'm sorry."
Charlie's gaze would return to the ground and she would mumble out "Um.. I like your top.. um, regardless.." before continuing to wait to receive that 'Okay, what the hell is wrong with you' stare. The one the receptionist at the hospital had given her a month or so ago.
