Okay, so this was really all Kai's fault, then. Of course it was. After all, rich, insensitive bastards didn't really have feelings, did they? "Yeah, I get it," he said hollowly. He realized no matter what he said, it seemed Zach's mind was already made up. And why should he get another chance? No matter how much he claimed to know about intimate relationships, it was obvious he just wasn't meant to have anything other than strictly casual. At least not until he learned how to change. Damn it all...
His expression had deadpanned at this realization, and as Zach exploded at him, telling him all the reasons why what they had was wrong and damaging for him, Kai didn't say anything. He didn't argue. Each word sent a thorn of pain through his chest, but he didn't react outwardly. "I said I get it," he replied lowly. "I've been nothing but trouble for you from the beginning. I'm not good for you. You deserve someone better." Kai was looking at the floor, unable to look at Zach's pain-filled expression. "It's fine. It's better this way. You can live your life free of my insufferable ego." He didn't know where these words were coming from, or how he had the strength to say them, but they were there now, like an invisible fence between the two men.
He turned to go back to his spot at the table, ignoring the zipping of Zach's bag. Kai felt empty. Part of him wanted to cling to Zach, to pull him into that lustful craze they'd felt so often before, but he knew that would just further prove Zach right. And Kai didn't want to do that anymore. "Goodbye," he uttered, keeping his back towards the writer until he left.
