this thread takes place on June 7th
John and Jake had been up since sunrise, but it was going to be worth it. As the date of their and Rain's one year anniversary started to sneak up, the boys had been in a little of a panic. They wanted the night to be so special. They wanted it to be perfect. So after a few conversations with their older siblings and some money borrowed Asian Santa, they were pretty sure they were as close to perfect as they were going to get.
They had put a huge sign on their front door with an arrow pointing to the side of the house, asking Rain to follow the rose petals (which were fake of course) into the back yard. Although the twins had at first considered leading her to the tree house, they wanted tonight to be special, and a bit more secluded, so they had made a winding trail to the edge of the woods behind the Bishop house. It would give a bit more privacy.
They boys had hung lanterns throughout the tree branches. Most were left white to give light, but some they had covered with bits of red and pink tissue paper. The smooth ground below them was covered with a thick blanket, pillows, and the dinner they had ordered take-out from what they heard was a very good restaurant. It was a bit outside of their normal price range, so they hadn't ever tried it before. There was a stereo under one of the trees playing some soft classical music and just out of sight they had stashed Rain's gifts.
"Is there enough light to eat by?" John asked his brother.
"Yeah...maybe? Maybe hang a few more?" Jake suggested. Both of the brothers were completely nervous. They had worried that it would rain. That they would accidentally kill Rain's present before the day arrived. And now they worried that too many lanterns would be a fire hazard and not enough would have them poking themselves with forks or spilling drinks.
The two were dressed in rented tuxedos (John's bow tie was light blue and Jake's was deep red) and had spent much longer than usual in front of the mirror trying to get their hair just right.
"We can't really fix it now. She should be here any minute," John said, glancing toward the house for Rain's familiar shape. They had worried it was ungentlemanly to have her drive herself and had offer a taxi to pick her up if she wanted. Something about the idea of her walking up roses to find them under the lit trees had stuck in their heads though. Plus it gave them a little extra time to get set.
After re-adjusting each other's ties, they stood under the lights and waited, already smiling at the thought of seeing her.
