Chase was content, at the moment, listening. He knew how to deal with the kids one on one, training them to use their powers. But when it came to convincing them of things like staying put at Hammel, even though they didn’t want to, or, hell, even convincing them to come in the first place, that was where he didn’t think he could do James’ job. James was good at explaining that aspect. Chase wasn’t. He was much better at helping the kids learn about their powers, and how to tame them. He enjoyed the daily challenges the teens threw at him, be it a new aspect they’d finally grasped of their abilities, or they’d just done something unexpected. Class was rarely boring.
Returning to Hammel had been odd for the blond, but it had also been a nice feeling. A familiar feeling. It was here he’d first felt accepted for being “different.” He’d had teacher that had encouraged him to use his abilities, to extend them. By the time he’d left, he’d gained near perfect control. He used his power when he had to, and that was enough. The rest of the time, it was turned off. Mind control as a dangerous toy to play with, but he’d never felt the drive to abuse it. Not since he was a teenager, first discovering what he could do. Even that hadn’t been taken that far. A few bad grades signed off on, but not remembered, a tattoo permission form. Typical teenage mischief.
James’ question to the boy made him smile, though. Because he worked so often with the kids, he tended to find a middle ground with their names. Something he could call them to be familiar, but their full name was often used if he was annoyed with them. He’d had the advantage with Niko, though. The kid had given him his nickname to use right away. It had made things easier, more familiar. He caught James’ eye. The conversation was lulling, and the problem was more or less solved. A quick glance at the clock showed he still had a bit of time left, so he slipped the football out from under his arm and placed it gently in Niko’s lap. “So you’re staying with us, at least for now.” He gave the boy a little grin. “We still have a little time before I have to, y’know, work. We can play for a little bit longer, if you want. Or you can go back to your dorm. It’s up to you.” He’d have to tell James how it had gone, later. There weren’t many ways to describe it, except for ‘awesome, I like this kid.’
[ooc – This is more or less finished, yes? <3]
