The Details
Hair Color: Black
Eye Color: Brown
Any Piercings? No
Any Tattoos? No
Any Scars? Normal rough and tumble ones, but nothing special.
General Appearance:
Michael is a man who is obviously proud of his looks. He takes great care in maintaining his physique, and grooms and dresses meticulously. He is usually wearing either a nice button up when he's teaching or a tight t-shirt when he's having casual time. He keeps his head hair clipped very short, and his sideburns and neck hair are always scruffy, but if anyone looked closely they would notice the scruff is perfectly shaped. He has a goatee that he keeps perfectly shaped and trimmed. Oh yeah, he knows he looks good, and smells it too!
He is almost always smiling a slightly lopsided, toothy, cocky smile. He always looks very sure of himself, even when he isn't. His voice is quite deep and booming, and when he gets upset he can be heard all through the halls of the school. He has a moderately thick South African accent (you know, like Leonardo DiCaprio in Blood Diamond) which tends to get out of control when he gets overly excited, either in a good or bad way. When he laughs it's a rich, deep, booming belly laugh that tends to carry and usually makes other people laugh too. It's just infectious.
Personality:
Michael is always perfectly groomed and looks confident, but in all reality this is just how he covers up his insecurities. His main insecurity is that he hates being alone, and this is only made worse by the fact that he never actually has to deal with it. He has a mild epileptic seizure disorder, which is well controlled with medication, but he has a seizure dog anyway. His dog is named Buddy and goes with him everywhere, including to class and to restaurants. He really doesn't need a seizure dog, he hasn't an episode in years, but he uses it as an excuse to never be alone.
He is also a very emotional man, prone to outbursts of both temper and laughter, often in the same five minute period. He is passionate about everything he does, because if he is not passionate he won't do it. He loves his job not necessarily because he loves math (which he does) but because he loves his students and loves knowing that he is teaching them something that they will use for the rest of their lives. He often adopts children as his "sons" and "daughters", because the one thing he wants most in the entire world is to have a family of his own.
The main thing about Michael Callahan is that he is a hopeless romantic. Unlike most men his age, Michael is not interested in flings or one night stands. What he wants is a true, committed relationship with a woman who needs him just as much as he will need her. He believes in true love that lasts until death, and that is exactly what he is looking for. Many people have told him his goals are unrealistic, but instead of being discouraged he feels sorry for these people because they have grown so cynical. He's had his heart broken before too, but he knows it will always heal.

History
Michael Callahan was born to an Irish Catholic missionary and a native South African Zulu. His father, Peter, is a very strong, commanding man who controls the life of his family as much as possible. When Michael was a child, Peter refused to allow Kefilwe to teach him about his Zulu heritage or the Zulu culture. He grew up very isolated from the other children, because he wasn't allowed to play with the villagers and many of the white missionary children weren't allowed to play with him. He only ever really had his family, and his best friend was his older half-sister, Helen. He went to Catholic school on the mission and had a pretty normal life, until, when he hit puberty, his mother had one of her rare stubborn rebellions and took him to see the shaman of her village. Her culture believed that metahumans were special, but not in a bad way. They were the religious leaders of the community, so obviously the shaman was a meta. His powre was identifying other metas, which is why Kefilwe decided Michael needed to see him. The shaman didn't speak English, only Zulu and Afrikans (a derivative of dutch) so Michael had no idea what the heated discussion was between his mother and her old spiritual leader.
As they were heading back home, his mother told him what the shaman had told her. Michael was a meta. The shaman had no way of knowing what his power was, but he did know that he would develop one, and do it soon. Michael knew his father absolutely hated metahumans, thought they were possessed by devils, and was terrified of him finding out. His mother told Michael not to worry, not to tell him. She didn't tell him it was because the shaman had the phone number to the head recruiter at Kocher and was currently calling him off the one phone in the village. Kefilwe's people loved Kocher because they could call them up, they would educate and train their metas, and send them home as influential members of the religious community.
It took the recruiter about two weeks to arrive because they were in such a remote location, and when he did Peter Callahan flipped out. He started screaming at Michael, telling him he was possessed and needed to be exorcised, not go off with this insane devil-worshipper. Well, given the alternative, Michael went with the devil-worshipper. Luckily for him, the recruiter spoke English, and decided that Kocher would not be a good place for him. Instead, he personally delivered Michael to Hammel. Michael tried to keep in contact with his family, but never received an answer to any of his letters or his phone calls.
He tried to forget about how his father had abandoned him in a time of need, but this was the beginning of his insecurities, and why he hates being alone. He went through school at Hammel a fairly happy, healthy teen. When he graduated he joined the Air Force and became a pilot, but right after he finished training to actually fly bombers he had his first epileptic seizure. He was given an honorable discharge because of his condition, and he decided to go to college instead. By his second year in college his seizures were well controlled with medication, but he decided to start looking for a seizure detecting dog anyway. A dog can either detect them or not, it is not something that can be trained. He contacted a local agency that specialized in service animals, but they had a long wait list. He started checking the local shelters and then shelters all around the state of Vermont, and eventually was united with Buddy. He was only six months old at the time, and had been acting very strangely for the ten minutes or so before one of the kennel workers had a seizure. He took Buddy home, got him tested and certified, and the dog has never left his side since.
When Micheal graduated from the University of Vermont at age 24 (after 2 years in the air force, remember) he found out that his favorite teacher at Hammel was retiring. This teacher had been his math instructor, and he decided to apply and take his place. He was accepted, and the following fall he stepped in. He has happily been working at Hammel ever since, and has a nice house on the outskirts of Pilot Ridge.
