Gwen sighed. She knew that her lawyer was right. She knew that they would have to talk about literally everything that had happened over the past few years. These were things that Gwen didn’t want to reflect upon right now, given the situation at hand.
It was hardest in this moment, knowing that she had to not only live it but talk about it as well. She shouldn’t have to deal with this. There were no signs that things would end like this. Whatever happened to for better or for worse? Evidently that had just applied to the good, or maybe just applied to her? Well no that wasn’t possible or Ryan would have still been here. Instead he was in his new apartment with his new girlfriend.
Now where are you from?
“Well I moved here to Seattle when I was eighteen for college, but I’m originally from Pilot Ridge in Vermont. I’m working on moving myself back there with Sammy.” She knew that her son was not thrilled but Burlington was not far away and Fletcher-Allen was a great hospital. She felt like she was running out of places to go, and Vermont seemed a lot less scary than moving to Boston on her own. At least she knew the layout of her old home town. “I’m working on moving Sam and myself back there now. I’ve been renting out my parent’s old house for years but I’ll move in there now.”
Oh do you have a Job there?
“Yes, I’ve applied and gotten one. I wouldn’t move Sam around like that without a job lined up.” Did this woman think she was stupid?
I see, and what is that?
“I’m a music teacher here and I will be there. I have perfect pitch and I’ve been playing piano for years and years.”
Alright, we should get to the meat of all of this. When did you mean Ryan Bracken?
Gwen thought back for a moment while the lawyer readied herself with her fingers on the keyboard of the laptop out in front of her. Gwen glanced up and then began. “I met Ryan when I was sixteen. We had a few mutual friends. I went to the public high school and he went to a private school. We dated until we graduated and then we both went to the same college, Umass Amherst.” Gwen fell silent.
Mhm, keep going.
“Well, when we were Juniors in college we pulled a fast one on our parents. We both went to Las Vegas for spring break and came back married. They didn’t like that very much. If I’d known…”
And then you had Samuel, right?
“No, not right away. We graduated first and got jobs. We were married young so we figured why not have kids? It took a while though, I have trouble conceiving and then I miscarried twice. We had Sammy though, I think that was the best day of my life.”
When did things begin to fall apart?
Gwen bit her lower lip. “Sammy was two, I think, yes two, when he started to get really sick. We brought him to the Doctors and they took test after test. That was when we found out that Sammy had cancer. It was hard, he was always so lively, I never would have guessed. I immediately started asking questions, like what did we do next? What were our options? I remember that Ryan just kind of…. sat there. I don’t think he knew what to do.”
Is he in remission?
“He was. It went away by the time he was three but it came back few months ago. Still the first time he was sick did the damage. Ryan and I started fighting all the time. We fought over money, we fought over traveling, we fought over Christmas and Easter and a million things. I feel like he wanted to pretend that Sammy wasn’t sick, and I just couldn’t. I think Ryan just wanted normal. I can’t blame him but that really could not happen with Sam so sick.”
I see you listed grounds for divorce as adultery.
“Yes. Ryan’s action started to make me suspicious. I hired a private detective and he caught them together. I didn’t want to believe it at first, after all who does. Still denial wasn’t going to help me or Sammy, denial wasn’t going to turn Ryan into any sort of father figure. I love Sammy too much to put up with any more of Ryan’s crap. I kicked him out.”
Do you think he’ll sue for custody?
“No, for money? Yes. To pay as little child support as possible? Yes. But Sammy is all mine, he’s my boy. He’ll be paying me alimony and child support though, I want you to see to that if you can. Sammy’s treatments are expensive.” The lawyer nodded.
“Also please leave Sammy out of this as much as possible. He’s only five after all…” Her greatest concern was her son. She didn’t want him pulled into a war like this. This was between her and Ryan, though it was over his treatment of Sammy in a sense. It was clear that he was never going to act like a father to Sammy, so he would be better off without him.
Of course. Do you have any other demands?
“Yes, change my last name back to Lanski.”
(Gwen has since moved back to Pilot Ridge. She has a job teaching Music at Hammel. Sammy is still ill, but very much alive and very much a five year old little boy. The divorce is official. Additionally Ryan Bracken is a meta, so Sam may or may not be one eventually. Gwen was well aware of the school and of Metas. Naturally she didn’t mention it during this meeting with her lawyer, lest she seem like a crazy person.)Behind the M A S K . . .Name: Claire
