Wanting the gift of silence (Jackeroe)

((Continued from First Lesson

Going to his room, he changed quickly into appropriate clothing, folding the ones he'd donned mere moments ago. They were clean but they were not 'public' clothes. Shane sighed and grabbed the map and paper from his nightstand along with a few other things before leaving the dorm. His head was splitting open so much tears of pain were streaming down his face. He'd have an ear infection for sure in the next few days.

Shane still wasn't positive what had gotten into Avery, it had started as a simple enough afternoon. He was suppose to be teaching her guitar and then she said something about liking him, he said sorry but no and then she got very upset. He tried to push past is but she got too upset and dragged them out side where it started to rain. He'd panicked and now his ears just hurt sooo bad.

Taking a strong left he wandered the campus with direction until he found the room he wanted and pushed the door open. The man he was looking for was on the other side of the room. Walking towards the man Shane put his hands over his head phones and pressed firmly to make the static go away.

Jackeroe had been working on his files and had also been spending his time bouncing a ball he had gotten from a machine off his ceiling. He had a whole fishbowl full of bouncy balls on his desk, right next to a bobble-head doll of Yoda, but he had bought another one just for the sake of saying he had bought another one. The ball was a vibrant yellow and it made a very nice ‘ping’ when it hit his floor and a good ‘whap’ when it hit his ceiling tiles, making him smile as he bounced it. He didn’t have another session for a while and was contemplating going to see Clarisse when his door shot open.

In a mere second, Jackeroe caught the ball and widened his eyes at Shane, one of his students, as he burst inside. The door shuddered closed behind him, But Jackeroe paid no attention to that, he was more worried about the boy who was covering his ears. Shane had super hearing, and it must’ve been hurting him- immediately Jackeroe dialed his power down, letting it plunge from where it was to a mere ten percent of its capacity, scaling it down a whole ninety percent right off the bat. Once the boy was calmer, he’d boost it back up, but at the moment it needed to be taken down a few notches. He could see tears streaming down the boy’s face; as a general adherer to the motto of ‘boys don’t cry’, Jackeroe took this as a very bad sign.

‘What’s wrong? Sit.’ He signed, pointing to a bench seat that quite obviously had been taken out of a car. His eyebrows were scrunched together in worry and he bit his bottom lip- he was genuinely afraid that Shane was hurt. He wasn’t a professional when it came to medical care, he may have to call Clarisse in if the situation looked really bad, which it was starting to right now.

Shane made it to the room where he'd been promised safety, he'd come to the room that promised comfort and the promise was kept. When Jack saw him the pain stopped, Shane collapsed into a chair and with shaking hands took off his head phones with a release of breath. His movements were slow at first, moving a flat hand from his chin out in a simple Thank you.

He rubbed his hands over his ears for a few minutes hoping to ease the residual ache. My dorm mate expressed an interest in learning guitar, so I tried to teach her some today. As a person I can connect a few of the dots even if I don't understand them. It seemed like she expected some reaction from her I couldn't give. She expressed that she liked me, and I apologized, I have no interest in her. Shane shook his head and closed his eyes. I tired to cheer her up by continuing the lesson, she seemed happier, but then she dragged me out side and made it rain. She's a weather controller, she was soo sad so I tried to cheer her up again but she got worse falling to her knees and crying. When I got her back inside she was still upset, she's up there still quiet and apologizing for scaring me, but it was her I was afraid for how upset she was.

Shane opened his eyes and looked at him, I started hearing when the rain started, but it got out of control so quickly. I put the silencer headphones on but they weren't working. I didn't know where else to go. Shane was relaxing and his head was starting to ease down.

Jackeroe reached into his pocket for a moment as he watched Shane, pulling out his cell phone. He could see Shane was calming down, so, without even thinking about it, he took out the battery- turning the device off took too much time. He watched the boy with the most serious face he had, which was almost scary to see because Jackeroe was not a very serious person. If anything, he smiled more than most people in Hammel combined; it was his way of having the students trust him. When it came down to it, he needed them to trust him, so they’d have people to turn to when situations like this arose.

He had to sign slow a few times as he watched Shane, because his sign language was not the best and was quite mediocre. He understood about eighty percent of the signs, and what he couldn’t understand, he could guess from context clues, but he couldn’t process them that fast. It was like someone trying to speak to him in Spanish. He may have taken three years of it in high school, but that didn’t make him ready to delve into an entire conversation. Sign language was even harder because he had taught it to himself, so he kept signing the word slow throughout the whole conversation, which made him feel like an idiot.

But the point had gotten across, and Jackeroe’s face darkened. He had noticed the rain, and he didn’t like it- that meant the roads would freeze up and a lot of people could be in danger. If a girl was out using her powers to show her moods, he didn’t want to see what would happen if she was raging. That needed to be looked into. ‘Who is this girl? What is her name?’ He mouthed it and attempted to sign it at the same time, but he wasn’t sure of the correct signing method for asking another person’s name. He’d have to get on the computer and look after all was said and done.

That gave him an idea. He held up a finger and went to his desk, picking up his laptop and carrying it over. Once he sat down, he began typing like a madman. When he was done, he turned the screen around fro the boy to read and to type on.

She won’t get into trouble, but I need to know her name so something like this won’t happen again. It’s obvious she isn’t in control of her emotions or her powers. Are you alright physically, because if not I can escort you to Miss. Prideaux.

Shane slowed down a bit and nodded. I am just fine, much better now that the pain is gone, although I'll likely have an ear infection here soon. Shane exhaled, he knew and could understand that he need to give up the name. He knew that even if he didn't they would just look up who is room mates were and figure it out. But he still felt bad, for some reason he couldn't understand.

A.V.E.R.Y He spelled the name out for Jack and looked at the man. I met her a few days ago, she was interested in learning guitar so I told her I would teach her, but she got all mushy Shane made a face. Why would a girl do that? I mean yes, they kind of warn you that hormones will do silly things to a person, but seriously I've known her only a few days. I don't understand Shane threw his hands up in confusion. This is hormones working right? I mean I know confidentiality and all that, but this girls not crazy right? Shane already felt bad for even thinking that but it was just so weird to him. He was still in the 'girls have cooties' mode of thinking.

The rain did sound good when it started, but this rain was different, it wasn't enjoyable after a few moments That in Shanes mind was the worse part of it all. Shane loved the rain and yet now he didn't really want to hear it.
