Ramona and Knives (Mia)

“Ooooh, Ramona~!” Dani sang out, her goofy grin looking even extra goofy as she grabbed a hold of Mia’s arm, and accidentally shocking the other, “I figured out what I want you to teach me!” After Dani found out that Mia could play piano, the teen was dying to be taught how to play properly. Dani had been taught the basics of piano, but it was a long time ago, and she could barely play the simplest of songs. Dani held up some sheet music, the title of it being “The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker Theme”. It wasn’t exactly the best song to try to learn how to play piano on, possibly something like “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” would be more appropriate, but Dani wasn’t one for doing things the easy way.

“I was thinking it over, and I knew I definitely wanted to learn a Zelda song, because well… it’s the best videogame ever. But with sixteen games, it was hard to choose which one. So I analyzed all the games, and decided that Wind Waker was the most relaxing and carefree one, not to mention the music is AWESOME.” Clearly, Dani was very excited about this. She had a tendency to ramble when it came to things she was excited about, and she was bouncing slightly as she spoke, “I mean, I know we’re on a field trip, and there isn’t a piano around here, I know ‘cause I looked for one, but I figured I’d show you anyway! And isn’t it cool?”

Dani finally stopped to let Mia take in all the information that was just thrown at her. She knew she was a bit overexcited about it all, but they were also on a field trip, causing Dani to be a bit extra happy in the first place.

Mia walked through the woods, it was the hiking tail, and yes, she was doing it alone. Most of the students were swimming or with someone else. She wasn’t even sure if any of her friends had come, she knew Ravyn hadn’t, and she knew Knives had. Speaking of Knives she smiled when she heard the name Ramona and looked behind her to see Dani the girl she actively called Knives. “Hey, Knives.” She jumped a little at the shock, but didn’t make a big deal about it, she knew it was because of her powers. She blinked at the girl’s excitement of what she wanted to be taught, she figured she meant on the piano. The girl was cute, the way she was excited by this certain piece. Mia couldn’t help but think if she already didn’t have a thing for a certain blonde boy would she have one for her? She shrugged it off, it didn’t matter, they were just friends and she was happy to keep it that way.

Mia listened carefully, though she had only gotten some things she had gotten the gist of it. “Zelda huh?” She looked at the music sheets, “You did your research that’s for sure.” She said with a smile. “I’m amazed you went through songs from all sixteen Zelda games.” She wasn’t much a gamer, though she did enjoy playing them, anything to keep her mind busy she enjoyed, if it was healthy and legal. “Zelda is a fantastic game but I find myself liking final fantasy better.” She grinned “yeah if there was a piano I would be at it right now.” She thoroughly enjoyed playing the instrument. “It’s all good. I’m glad you found something you would like to learn. And in no time you will be able to brag about it.” She winked at the girl.


“Walk with me?” She asked before starting to walk up the trail again. “You picked a nice piece; the beginning will be easy enough to learn.” Mia didn’t mind the girls excitement; she found it refreshing.

Dani beamed as Mia replied, only making the girl giddier about the whole thing. “Well, I have all of the soundtracks, and I like listening to them anyway,” she explained. When Mia mentioned liking Final Fantasy better than Zelda, Dani gave a mock shocked look. “Final Fantasy is good, but nothing can beat Zelda in my heart!” Dani added in somewhat dramatically.

When asked to join Mia for her hike, Dani gave a nod, and started to walk along with her. “Exactly! Soon this will be the party trick that I get to do instead of putting a light bulb in my mouth and making it light up.” She wasn’t kidding, either, once people found out about Dani’s ability to manipulate electricity, putting a light bulb in her mouth was typically the first thing she was asked to do. It was like she was Uncle Fester sometimes.

As they walked, Dani looked around and took in her surroundings. She took in a deep breath of the fresh air, “this is such a nice trail,” Dani commented after a few moments of silence, “it’s the perfect place for a field trip. I haven’t had a chance to go camping in forever.” Giving a warm smile, she looked over at Mia. “So what were you doing here all by yourself?”

Mia chuckled a little “It’s nice to know there are still some people who are actively passionate about something. You know without being unhealthy addicted.” It seemed people rather put up with things for a little while and then forget about them and moving on to the next thing. It was quite sad really, which is the reason why there were so many Zelda, and Final Fantasy games. “That’s it stick to what you love and believe in. They are both pretty good, Zelda comes a close second.” So many times, have people just agreed with others, having the same opinion as others without much thought into it. It made the world seem like everyone was each other’s clones.

Mia laughed a bit “Do people really make you do that?” If anyone asked her to make it snow or rain she would glare at them and tell them to F-off. She wasn’t anyone’s personal entertainment, nor was she anyone’s personal mother nature either. Besides she couldn’t control it either, a couple people knew about that the hard way. “Your power is pretty cool.” Why people were so fascinated by Dani showing it off confused Mia. She didn’t see the big deal but Dani didn’t mind it then she saw no harm as to why the girl shouldn’t show it off.

Mia looked up at the sky, she was content, no dark clouds, no rain, no thunder or lightning. It was a beautiful day to be on this field trip. She nodded “Yeah it is. It’s beautiful up here. It reminds me that there’s more to life than just video games, and drama.” She was still trying to get past the drama she had been dragged into between Cameron and Ravyn. “I’ve never been camping. This is my first. Well unless you count the times I camped out in my backyard with my brothers but that was only for an hour or so.” She camp out in the backyard to watch the northern lights, and sometimes just for fun. But Barrow, Alaska wasn’t the type of place where you could camp out the whole night either. “Ah, I didn’t know where everyone had gone off to. Besides I’m not really sure who came here that I’m friends with other than you.” She really wasn’t paying all that much attention.

Dani gave a laugh, “I dunno, my Zelda addiction might be a bit unhealthy. The first time I played Zelda, it was Ocarina of Time and when I was seven. Ever since then I was hooked. I’ve beaten all the games multiple times.” Dani said, scratching the back of her head, “Did you know the original Legend of Zelda was the first video game to have an open world to explore?” She added on; Dani loved her trivia, but she also knew a crazy amount of Zelda information as well; she could talk for hours on the subject. Dani had also beaten Ocarina of Time so many times that she could probably write down a walkthrough from scratch if she wanted to.

“Yeahhhh…” Dani smiled, “I really don’t mind, ‘cause even I think it’s pretty funny,” she explained, “It also might have to do with the fact that most the non-metas that find out are in musical theatre, because of my parents. And we all know how they can get sometimes.” Dani teased, meaning no harm to anybody, she just enjoyed poking fun at people. “Aww, thanks. I like my power a lot. Yours is really cool too!” Dani really meant it, too. She enjoyed science and weather always fascinated her, so naturally Dani thought Mia’s ability was awesome.

Dani wasn’t sure why, but she was surprised to hear that Mia had never gone camping before, other than in her backyard. “Backyard camping still counts though.” She stated with a nod, “I mean, the whole point of camping is to be outside and enjoy the nature. A backyard meets those standards.”

Mia laughed a little and placed her hand on the girl’s shoulder “Don’t worry about it. I think we all of those a bit unhealthy addictions.. Mine is Johnny Depp… I have seen pretty much everything he has been in..” She was a fan girl, she wasn’t ashamed of it. “I did not know that. That’s actually kind of interesting. Woah Zelda is old..” Mia had to remind herself if she ever went on a trivia game show to bring Dani along to be her partner. With both their brains, they would be undefeatable; it will be girl power all the way.

“ah really? I don’t know if I would like people wanting me to show my power. Though mine isn’t as cool. I can make it rain, it’s not as big of a deal as being able to make a light bulb work in your mouth.” Mia didn’t get how musical theatre people had anything to do with her showing of her power but she shrugged it off. “I see.” At the mention of parents she quickly sheltered herself, she really didn’t understand it. She wasn’t sure if Dani meant that involving powers, if she did than she wouldn’t know, her father had died before she had gotten her powers and her mother was and still is distant to Mia at least that’s what it seemed to her. If she meant in general well she still didn’t understand, her parents weren’t the bragging type. “I don’t see how making it rain when your sad is cool but thanks.” She said with a sheepish smile.

Mia chuckled “Alright, I will take it. But I’ve never done anything like this.” Mia nodded, she had very much enjoyed the nature during her camp outs in the backyard. Even if she had been freezing her butt off; though she was glad that she had like four fluffy huskies to keep her somewhat warm. “Well that was the reason for us camping out; so I guess it does count.”

Dani grinned, “Everyone has his or her obsessions,” she admitted with a nod, “The Legend of Zelda just had its twenty-fifth anniversary not too long ago. And may it last for another twenty-five glorious years!” Dani announced, looking to the sky as if the God she didn’t believe in would somehow make it happen. Dani was just silly and enjoyed doing things like that. “Johnny Depp is cool though, I think my favorite movie he was in was Chocolat,” she said after a moment of thought. Most would expect Dani to say Edward Scissorhands or something of the like, but she had a wide range of interests, and she remembered watching the movie with her mother when she was younger, which was also a nice memory for Dani.

“I’m not one for doing big displays in front of people, but as long as it’s all good fun, then I don’t mind,” she said after a moment of thought. Dani had a terrible case of stage fright and never liked to be made the center of attention in a big crowd, but in most situations when she was asked to "show off" her powers, it was just a couple people, so it wasn’t so bad. “It really is awesome,” Dani gave a warm smile to Mia, “I think many people would enjoy having your ability. Look at it this way, at least you don’t have something like… being able to hear seagulls’ thoughts.” Dani let out a laugh at the thought. “It’d be like that seagull scene in Finding Nemo, except all the time.”

“Well then, we’ll just have to make this camping trip one you will never forget!” Dani declared, patting her friend on the back. “We’ll do something crazy! Maybe not too crazy, since this is a school trip, but juuuust crazy enough.” The little gears in Dani’s head were already turning madly with ideas. Dani was getting excited about having some fun; she was already restless about the fact that she couldn’t be in the lake, so she needed another way to occupy herself. Dani loved swimming, but tried to avoid water if others were in it, in fear of accidentally electrocuting people.

Mia nodded “Yeah, some are weirder than others… and unhealthier.” She thought about the people who were obsessed with video games; more obsessed than Dani, like they never went outside because they were obsessed. Or the people who were obsessed with drugs. There were so many things; they world they lived in had become so messed up. She rubbed her wrist not wanting to think about obsessions anymore. She grinned “Twenty-fifth? Is it really that old? Gosh.. I feel old..” She giggled at the girl, she was silly and fun to be around. She was glad she had met the Asian girl. “Hmm movie.. I would say my favorite was Sweeny Todd, purely because of the fact he played the evil guy in the movie. Though nothing tops 21 jump Street.” 21-jump Street was the show that got her hooked on Johnny Depp, so naturally it was her favorite.

“ah I see. Well as long as you have fun doing it. It’s all that counts.” Mia loved being on stage, the rush was worth wild. The was no other feeling like it, though the only times she has been on stage was when she was singing, either during her talent show at school or on stage with her band. With her band it was more about the music and lyrics than her getting attention. It was never about her getting attention she never wanted it but it was about being able to help other people through the lyrics she sang. Mia blushed a little “thanks, though I wish I had the power to talk to animals or something a less emotional..” Mia was a very emotional person, and sometimes she did get a bit moody. Mia burst out laughing “Oh gosh. You have a good point. That would drive anyone insane..”

“How will we do that?” She was quite curious, though she didn’t get bored easily. Apparently if she had content walking the hiking trails alone. She was happy that the girl had come on the camping trip too and had come to find her. With her happiness the sun got brighter and hotter. “Crazy is good with me. As long as it doesn’t send me back to the school.” She stuck out her tongue; showing the girl her tongue ring, the pink haired girl was full of surprises. Mia couldn’t swim so she was content on staying out of the water and away from canoes and boats.

“Yup, Zelda is a classic,” Dani said with a grin, “That’s why I love it. I love the characters and how focused Nintendo is on the plot of games.” Most popular games today were shooters, something Dani didn’t mind playing, but it was never her first choice. She’d always choose a good plot over graphics any day. “I’ve never seen 21 Jump Street,” Dani confessed, “I’ve heard it’s good, the television show, that is; I heard the remade movie wasn’t all that great.”

Dani gave a big grin, “Oh, no, nothing that would send us back to school,” she confirmed with a nod. “Have you ever heard of the game Chubby Bunny? It’s absolutely disgusting but one of those things you really need to try while camping.” Dani wasn’t one for eating super sweet things, but while camping, it was a different case. S’mores were a must and playing Chubby Bunny always seemed to end up happening. Dani’s all time record for Chubby Bunny was fourteen marshmallows. How she was able to fit all of them in her mouth at once? Not even Dani herself knew.

“And we can also do the normal stuff, you know, climb trees, tell campfire stories, get a game of capture the flag or manhunt going…” the list could really go on and on, “Oh! And cook almost anything we can find over a campfire, regardless of how weird it’d be.” Dani really enjoyed making life fun. She was the type of person who was optimistic about life – she knew times can get tough, but she also lived by the idea that life was what you made it. If you wanted to enjoy life, you could always find a way to enjoy it, and no matter how bad it was, things would get better.

“Do you have any ideas?” Dani turned to face her pink haired friend, “I mean, I know everything I said isn’t exactly crazy, but we could also go around stealing everyone’s left shoe. That’s pretty badass, if I do say so myself.” She let out a giggle at the thought.

Mia grinned “But that’s why I like Final Fantasy too though. Because they put so much effort into the games and because like none of the stories are ever the same and all the characters a unique. “ She could play FF games for hours “Not to mention you have to think more with Final Fantasy than Zelda.” Another thing that she loved about the game, it wasn’t just that you had to go through the story line, you actually had to think what would be the best move to fight the creatures instead of just attacking it till it died. She loved anything that challenged her. That was why Zelda was a close second, and why she loved adventure type games more than any other kind. She hated shooter games with a passion, because it was just so boring going around shooting other people. “Really? We have to have like a marathon or something… Stay up all night on the weekends and get like no sleep just watching 21 jump street.” Mia groaned at the mention of the movie “The movie sucks.. They took a completely serious show and made it into a comedy… I hate it.”

Mia grinned with her but shortly frowned as she shook her head when she asked if her ever heard of chubby bunny. “Nope, Can’t say I have.” Though if she knew what it was she would never do with. She was a complete health freak only eating a few sweets here and there. Besides she was never able to stomach really sweet foods like S’mores she couldn’t image trying to put fourteen marshmallows in her mouth at once.

“I never climbed a tree… I’m not so sure about stories but we can defiantly sing songs.. What’s capture the flag and Manhunt?” It was obvious she never had a ‘normal’ American childhood. But she was alright with that, she loved Barrow, Alaska, even if there were no trees and you couldn’t going camping. “Oh cooking.. You don’t want me to cook at all…” She sucked at cooking, there were no words to describe her cooking other than terrible and that was even an understatement. For Mia every time things got better something always happened to remind her that her life sucked, like how she met Cameron, one of the best things that had happened to her; and then someone stole her journal and her mental state had went down quite a bit when that happened.

“hmm.. Considering I’ve never did anything like this camping wise. I don’t really have any ideas.. Other than singing in front of a camp fire..” She shrugged; she realized that made her sound like the most boringest person in the world. Mia laughed “that does sound pretty badass.”

Dani raised an eyebrow, “Zelda is a major puzzle game series,” she said, “Most of the game requires a lot of thinking. I’d say more so than Final Fantasy because you have to think on your feet because fighting is done in real time. You don’t even get an enemy health bar, so you also need to think more with trying to use your weapons and magic accordingly without knowing how much more of a fight your enemy will put up.” She wasn’t at all angry about the comment, but instead confused. “Yes, we’ll definitely do a marathon!” Dani added with a grin. It was a bit dorky, but Dani enjoyed doing marathons, whether it was watching television, movies, playing videogames, running, or biking, she enjoyed it. Something about devoting a large amount of time to nothing but one thing was fun… unless it was something boring, because then it sucked.

“It’s just a weird game that my friends showed me on one of my first camping adventures, and I guess it’s pretty popular.” Dani explained, “Basically you just shove a bunch of marshmallows in your mouth until you can’t say ‘I am Chubby Bunny’ anymore, but you don’t have to eat the marshmallows, that would probably make even the toughest stomach sick.”

Dani’s eyes grew wide after hearing Mia had never climbed a tree before. “You really haven’t?” she asked, shocked, “Well, we can always change that! C’mon!” Dani then bolted towards the nearest stable tree and jumped up, barely able to reach the first branch. Due to growing up in various theatres, Dani was used to climbing all over the place and going into high places; she was practically a little monkey. She pulled herself up onto the branch and looked over at Mia, “Manhunt is like a different version of tag, and Capture the Flag is where you have two teams, and each try to capture the other team's flag. It has similarities to tag, because if you're tagged while on the opposing team's land, then you're sent to 'jail' and someone from your team has to rescue you."

Dani climbed a few branches higher and stopped to sit on one, “As long as we don’t sing ‘Kumbaya’.” Dani teased with a laugh. “Oh, and you know I can’t cook either, but we can always get someone else to cook for us.” Dani grinned.

Mia giggled at the girl’s determination to support her favorite game. Now that she thought about her reasoning wasn’t very good; she just shrugged. “I don’t for me Zelda is easier… But I like FF for all the variations of characters.” She was going to have to draw some Zelda fan pictures for the girl. She was sure Dani would love that. She was already starting to get some ideas. “Yes! But I have to warn you, 21 jumpstreet is kind of a dark series, I mean is realistic and that’s what pretty much makes it dark. But it's still a great show.” Mia was also a huge dork; which probably surprised a lot of people. But not a lot of people knew just how much of a dork she was.

“Oh I see. That sounds kind of disgusting… But I guess it couldn’t hurt to play it.” She wondered if she could get Ana and Cameron to play. That was an interesting thought. “Well I’m glad you don’t have to eat them.. I’m not much of a sweets person..” She really wasn’t, she couldn’t handle eating very sweet things not to mention she just was a total health nut so she had no interested. “How many could you shove in your mouth?”


Mia shook her head “There are no trees where I’m from…” Considering it was always cold, trees would never be able to live; so that meant no tree climbing for her. She grinned as she followed the girl to a stable tree. “Alright!" She called after. She looked at the branch that Dani was on and climbed up herself. She barely reached it herself, she was just only a couple inches taller than the Asian. Mia had great upper body strength from working out, doing pushups and pull-ups. “Huh sounds like fun. I wouldn’t mind playing that..” Mia looked at a slightly higher branch that looked like it could hold her weight; she climbed up on to it. “Oh I might have played that game when I was younger… Hmm I didn’t know what it was called, I only played it once..”


Mia followed Dani, but stopped on the branch higher than Dani’s. She sat down and leaned on the trunk. “Uh climbing trees is sort of fun, and relaxing. Good thing I’m not afraid of heights…” She smiled “Do you know anyone who can cook? And don't worry I don't like that song to begin with.."

“Final Fantasy does have some cool characters.” Dani agreed, “I like a lot of the background characters, like Reno. But I’d have to say Squall is my favorite hero from the series. I know he’s overrated, but he’s really cool.” Dani grinned, she loved all sorts of television shows and she was sure that she’d enjoy 21-Jump Street as well. “I look forward to it!”

“Yeahhh, but it’s one of those things that once it’s done, you can say ‘I did it!’” Dani said with a laugh, picturing Mia with a mouthful of marshmallows. “This is really gross… but I once got fourteen in my mouth. I was fifteen-years-old and I haven’t been able to do it since. My friend, Aichan, has a video of it somewhere though, as proof.” Dani always amazed herself while watching that video, she had no idea she was able capable of something like that.

“But you could have climbed them here,” Dani teased, hanging from a limb before deciding to settle on it and lean against the trunk of the tree. “Hey, you can see the lake!” The teen pointed in the direction of the lake, where many of the students were swimming. “They’re really fun games. Just something to get people running around and goofing off. It wouldn’t surprise me if you played it before; it’s pretty common. I’m sure even in Alaska.”

Dani took in a deep breath of the fresh air, “Hmm, I don’t know if anyone who is here is good at cooking, but we can always ask around. If not, I’ll take a shot at it!” Dani liked to cook, well, trying to cook.

Mia nodded “My favorite background character is Riku.” She just really liked the girl, she wasn’t sure why. “Oh do you really like Squall? Nah he is really cool.” She could care less if something was overrated, if she liked it than she liked it. She grinned as Dani said she was looking forward to it. Now she was getting excited, and they really hadn’t planned anything. But she was going to make this happen, that was for sure.

An eyebrow raised at the Asian girl “What’s so great about being able to say I shoved so many marshmallows in my mouth?” She asked questionably, she really didn’t get her peers and the kind of things they thought were ‘fun’. When the girl said she had been able to get fourteen in her mouth when she was fifteen; she sighed heavily. Fifteen hadn’t been her greatest year. “Oh does she? Huh now I want to see you with fourteen marshmallows shoved into her mouth.” She winked at her, now she was wanting to see this video. Even though she wasn’t very sure about the game itself.

“Ah you do have a point. I guess I never had the want.” Even today she hadn’t really wanted to climb the tree, but she was glad she had. She always had good dorky fun with Dani, and she loved it. She was able to be a part of herself she normally didn’t show people. Mia looked toward the lake “It’s beautiful.” She said in a whisper. She really wished she wasn’t afraid of the water, she had tried just walking on the dock but even that hadn’t went well. She was just too afraid of the water, which she didn’t get. She knew she was a afraid of drowning, it wasn’t the way she wanted to die but she hadn’t realized she was afraid of the water in general. “Ah! Yeah I guess it actually is; I just never took the time to find out what it was called.”

“Hmm Well I know one person who can cook…” She really wasn’t sure how great it would be to ask Cameron to cook for them, she figured he would hold this against her for when he wanted something for her. Then again, she was sure he wouldn’t pass up a chance to cook for someone as pretty as Dani.

“Oooh, she’s cool too.” Dani agreed with a nod. She gave a laugh at Mia’s question, “There is no point!” She grinned, “but you can still say that you did it, just because.” For Dani, some of the best things in life don’t really have a point to them; shoving marshmallows in your mouth certainly wasn’t a highlight of life, but it was still a good laugh. “I’ll email her sometime about sending me that video. I made her promise to not put it on YouTube.”

“I think it’s relaxing to just climb a tree and sit here. Especially if you have a good book to read.” Dani stretched, being careful not to lose her balance while doing so. While looking at the lake, she gave a small sigh. “I wish I could go swimming with everyone…” she mumbled. It wasn’t that she couldn’t go swimming with other people at all, but when it was a large amount of people, she tried to avoid it. She had never electrocuted someone in water before, mostly because she had never gone swimming with other people until she had better control of her powers, but with larger numbers, risks increased. Also, whenever she had got swimming with friends, they knew very well of the risk beforehand.

“Oh! Who?” Dani’s eye lit up. If someone could cook, then it wouldn’t be a total disaster. Dani would still try to help, of course, but at least half the food would be edible at that point, but really, how hard would it be to bake an apple in a fire?
