Lani opened his hands as if he were welcoming the praise from Odion. It wasn’t too complicated, and it was so easy to pull off especially for the two of them. It would be a great thing if they found someone with an important set of keys on him. “In a crowded place,” he said, start small and get a small crowd and when people were stopped and looking people would be shoving back and forth to get through at first and no one would notice being bumped. “The mall might be a good place to start.” He tapped his chin his mind working brilliantly; he would have to scope out of the camera and make sure they were stuck in the wrong direction. And the mall didn’t have great security to begin with.
Lani huffed obviously not very pleased with the answer. He felt like he was wriggling out from under a spot light. Just because Lani blushed easily… he shook his head at the two of them. But Odion was right he had gotten rusty since Odion had been gone, and he had worked so hard trying to get on the same level as Odion. All the more reason he needed to not let himself slip and he needed to keep working and keep training. He narrowed his eyes at Odion and sighed. “God, you’re right,” he said, “I’ve gotten rusty.” He laughed at himself and shook his head, he didn’t have any good responses. Wittiness was never a strong suite of his but he had gotten better. And now he was back where he started. Well it was a good thing that Odion had decided to come see him or else he might have been sorely disappointed in Lani’s lapse.
He took a moment to look at Odion again, he was having his own problems, and Lani sighed knowing that some of that was his fault. It was hard falling and having no one to catch him but there had been people, there was Adrianna and there was Shapiro and Dr. Neville too, though if anyone asked he would deny that he had spoken with the man until the day he died. But it was worse to have someone who was trusted suddenly fall through. For that Lani felt guilty for taking that away from Odion. And Rhett was gone, at least Lani hadn’t seen him, which was all too well for the other blond since now that Lani had woken from his stupor things were not going to go well for Rhett if he tried to pick another fight.
Lani shrugged, “I mean I guess it could be a little better, but it’s not like I’m going out like this.” He laughed and nodded in remembrance. “And I do recall it was fine then too. You just don’t like my color choices.” Lani accused. Of course Lani still had the hat, though that had remained in the closest where he had put it. He didn’t have anything that went with it so he didn’t really know what to do with it. Every time he looked at it he told himself he should return it, but then he just went through a moment of forced forgetfulness. He liked the hat. Lani wondered what Caroline really would think of Odion, he hoped she liked him, but she had heard all that had happened when he had gone home from Lani and he just hoped that he had been such a blubbering mess that she hadn’t heard the name very well.
Ah yes, Adrianna, he found himself clinging to her over the past weeks. Lani could almost feel the chill in the air. He watched Odion his eyes guarded but curious. Why did that bother Odion? He had been the one pushing Lani to tell Adrianna about his job, and while this certainly wasn’t the way Lani had wanted to tell her, that had been taken out of his hands, didn’t this give Odion what he wanted in the ways of Lani telling Adrianna? He watched Odion his face falling as he felt the tension growing and the old way of things was slipping through his fingers. Adrianna was trying to make him feel better but Lani was tearing himself down more than she ever could. How broken did Odion want him? Lani didn’t think he could have fallen much farther.
He sighed and nodded not needed to be given the translation. “Yeah,” Lani said withdrawing inward again, “Good luck.” He said offering a smile back at Odion. He didn’t move from his chair until Odion was gone and only then it was to close the door behind him. He sighed resting his head against the door, why was this so hard? Oh well, it looked like his plans for today were about to be fulfilled anyways. He grabbed the book back from the shelf and realized with a hateful smile that he was at just the right part of this book. For the main character’s life just became shambles around him as well. But there was a fundamental difference. It wasn’t his fault. He hoped Caroline would be done soon he didn’t like being alone now, his thoughts were just getting a little too dark.
