Sean held his professional and ethical standards in the highest regard. It was important to him not to compromise on his ethics, because those were often all that he had, when one stripped away all of the social pretense. He had told others before that each person was only a collection of what he or she had chosen to do with their lives, and he believed that. The telepath was firmly committed to helping other people, because that was the right course of action. His professional goal, which was his personal goal focused on Hammel, the students, and his coworkers, was to make the world a better place than it had been before he was born or would have been without him. He was realistic enough to know that he couldn’t save the world, but remained idealistic enough to want to do everything in his power to help.
With her nod, the telepath knew that they had reached a full understanding and agreement. What remained was entirely on him for the future: he had to draft up the consent form and bring it to her so she could review it. He had to prepare himself mentally and physically for the task. He had to check with Josh’s schedule so that he could determine a neutral time and location and then inform her of it. He would begin that as soon as he returned home from Hammel tonight.
Sean waited until Deliliah had given him her assent, as he knew how she felt about being touched by men. The handshake a moment ago notwithstanding. He had no desire to run roughshod over her boundaries, not at this moment and not in the future, not in light of the recent past. Once she had given him the assent to help, he offered her his arm for support. She could take it and lean on him, since he was concerned that she might fall. But by offering rather than touching her, she had the ability to do so on her own terms and thus maintain comfort and control.
With that, he walked toward the door to his office with her and then out into the hall. The telepath didn’t know exactly where she had parked, but Hammel didn’t have too many designated parking spaces. Fortunately, with the location of the administrative offices, they didn’t have that long of a walk ahead of them. “We’ll be there soon,” he promised.
