The stars shone through eternity lighting the same sky endlessly with eyes seeing more than the human mind could ever hope to even understand. Lani didn’t mind that these endless stars might glance down one moment to see a blooming romance and the next time the thought crossed their mind they glanced down at world far different than the one today. Perhaps there would be ocean where there was once thriving humanity. Perhaps there would be fire crossing the land, and the stars would take no care either way. They would shed no tears for the lost souls that passed their breath so briefly on the plant so ancient, so magnificent that it marveled at their insignificance. Maybe the soul lived forever, but where forever. On the geisha face of the moon? On the endless glorious flames of the sun, or on the envy green of the earth herself? Or was it on the stars so vast they were lost in the blackness and brightness of space?
It was hard to see the meaning or the worth in such a short time. No one lived forever, so when the last human died no one would remember their name. No one would remember their existence. No one would remember that once upon a time two lovers met and thrived on luck and their chance of meeting. Their breaths pass the blink of an eye of the stars and yet in their breath their importance never dwindled. The vastness of the universe and the lives of the planets were something contemplatively overwhelming. But the fact that in this vastness of the world and of time and of people something out there deemed that their paths should cross was something amazing. Lani didn’t have a name to thank but if he did he would thank them endlessly. Maybe it was the stars, or maybe it had no name at all. Or maybe it had all the names.
Lani’s expression softened and he squeezed Odion’s hand. “Well I don’t know about you, but I like this reality.” Lani said with a soft smile. He could understand Odion, the unknown was one of the most terrifying things about humanity. Hadn’t Lani just been afraid of what would happen if he admitted his feelings to Odion. Fear was a natural part of life, it kept people alive, it gave a motivation and an understanding of what was dangerous. He didn’t pretend to understand what Odion was going through, he had never had something in the way of visions, he sometimes got feelings, hunches but they were usually based on nothing more than impressions. “This is real.” Lani said, “This is reality.”
A soft smile crossed Lani’s face and stayed there like it was made on his face. There was a lot to think about in the world and if Odion had to be logical so be it. Lani laughed. He didn’t know why he loved Odion’s smirks and smug looks so much. It was perhaps that he thought he was winning all the time. Lani was willing to give that to him. But just today. “Logic will only get you so far in the end,” Lani pointed out, “Some imagination needs to thrive and push the impossible or we’d never have electric lights.” He said with a sly grin that showed he was sure he would win if they wanted to argue logic and philosophy. Everything was philosophy before it was science. Philosophers examined the stars and the weather and the world far before the respective fields were decided.
Lani missed the annoyance Odion had for his joking. Lani stuck his tongue out at Odion for that comment. “Might as well start dying my hair now.” He said sarcasm dripping off of his tongue. Odion was right, it did ruffle his feathers but two could play at that game. Though as soon as Odion pulled him closer Lani’s mind really couldn’t focus on anything for too much longer. It was like fire but instead of burning it was a warm and tingling feeling that raced across his skin. Odion definitely had the number one way to distract Lani from whatever he was focusing on. His eyes slid shut but even behind his lids he could see the piercing blue eyes. He opened them as slivers and separated long enough to catch a breath. His hand gripped Odion’s and his other hand toyed with his hair a little. Lani finally backed off his heart racing and pounding in his ears. “You didn’t tell me you could kiss like that.” Lani said in a mock accusing voice.
