Pitch Imperfect - open

[Sawyer Lynn]

She was supposed to be swimming. That was what Sawyer had set out to do that morning. But there were these two very annoying little jerks who were holding up the tap to wash off before stepping into the pool.

One had a very high-pitched, very nasal voice while the other just kept "OMG get out of here, that bitch did not" -ing to every word the other was saying.

Tapping into her abilities, Sawyer smirked and started to mimic the high-pitched girl's voice. At first, she didn't notice so Sawyer raised her voice until both of them jumped and turned around. "What is wrong with you?" the friend demanded before they both walked away, calling her a stupid bitch.

Sawyer smirked and stepped up to the tap to rinse herself off. It started off slowly but surely, she found herself not hearing anything. She thought it was the water so she stepped out and shook her head.

"Oh for God's sake." She started to say. Not that she could actually hear it.

As she walked, trying to blow her nose so her ears would pop [not that it would help], she tried to make sounds to see if she could hear again but all that did was make her look like a lunatic, screaming as she walked around the pool's area.

In her doing so, she barely had the time to register people in front of her as she bumped into someone and bounced backwards. "Dude, I'm sorry. I'm deaf right now." She shouted. She didn't mean to of course, but without her hearing, she had no control over her volume.

Braxton had been stalking a very pretty girl all day long. She was just about Braxton's alley, blonde, petite, beautiful face and perfect curves. There was only one problem: she was best friends with a girl he had previously been with, and who with, as per usual, things didn't end pretty. If only her friend could leave so Braxton could hit the blonde up...

"Hey!" Braxton exclaimed as he bumped into the brunette. "Watch it!" Her explanations went over him, as his eyes were searching for the couple of girls he had been chasing all day. "Whatever."

In reality, the fact they bumped had been Braxton's fault as well. See, walking while your eyes following two girls on the other side of the pool, and not looking at what's in front of you, it's not the safest way to... well, walk. He had avoided falling into the pool twice now by pure luck. But something was telling him his luck was going to run out soon. Or maybe it had run out by now, he had lost track of the two girls and could find them in the vicinity now.

"Oh great, see, now I've lost them!" He exclaimed at the girl before giving her a more detailed look. "Wait, weren't you the one who drove them away some minutes ago by mimicking her voices?" Yes... it had been her. "So mean."

She looked up at the person she had bumped into and saw that he looked a little upset. He started talking but Sawyer looked at him dumbly, trying to figure out what he was saying.

"Yeah dude, I can't hear." She yelled out. Pointing to her ear, she shook her head to indicate what was wrong. "My power must have short-circuited or something." She shouted before looking back up at him. "Can't hear a word you're saying." She shrugged.

People were looking their way but looked away just as quickly, not bothering to find out why the tiny girl was yelling at the good-looking boy.

"How loud am I?" Sawyer asked as she poked her ears, wondering how long this would last.

"What are you, deaf?" Braxton shook his head lightly as she explained herself. "Hey! Tone it down!"

Oh, she was indeed being loud. Very loud in fact. The few heads that were around the pool had already turned towards her, and well, she kept screaming. Worst of it all: Braxton still couldn't find the two blondes he was here for, and they probably weren't going to come back to the weird annoying girl that shoo them away in the first time, specially if said girl is now screaming her lungs out (well, almost) in the pool.

"You, weirdo, stop!" Brax motioned with his palms towards the brunette. "YOUUUU AREEEE YELLIIIIIING!" He yelled at her more intensely than she was originally yelling. "STOP YELLIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIING!"

As the boy continued to speak, Sawyer shook her head to try and speed up the process of her ability setback. I probably should start learning how to lip read. She thought to herself as she looked at the taller teen. Was he a teen? She'd never seen him around before.

When his palms suddenly appeared in front of her, Sawyer reeled back and looked at his face, scandalised by his gesture. She still couldn't hear what he said but at least she understood what he was saying. Suddenly, her ears popped and she heard his last syllable.

"Jeez, you don't have to yell." She replied, mock offended. She knew she had also been yelling.

"Why are you still standing here, I'm trying to get to the pool. Do you even go here?"

"Hey!" Braxton finally returned to a socially acceptable voice volume. "It was you who started it!"

The girl was right. Why was Braxton even still standing here? He had a certain blonde to chase and this brunette was nowhere near as interesting as, well, any other blonde in the universe. He was about to simply step aside and leave, as per her suggestion, when he felt rather annoyed at her words. Was she shooing him? Because no one shoos Braxton Carson.

"Oh, no worries, I'll take you there, then," Braxton said with a smile as his left arm moved aside, focusing his power on sending the brunette flying into the pool.

Raising an eyebrow at the boy's weak come back, Sawyer mimicked his voice, making it whinier than it actually was. "It was you who started it!" She changed back to her own voice before snorting. "What are you, in the fifth grade?" She retorted, ignoring the hypocrisy and hoping this guy was thick enough to not recognise it as such either.

Of all things the boy could have done, pushing her into the pool had to be his biggest mistake. Purely out of instincts, her leg curled around his while one hand grabbed the front of his shirt, sending him toppling down into the water with her. She accidentally swallowed some of the water in her panic from falling and as she pushed back up to the surface, she hoped the boy swallowed even more.

Coughing out the water, Sawyer kicked over to the side of the pool, sputtering as she realised she could have easily just knocked her head against the tiles because the asshole had too much pride. "The fuck is wrong you, jackass? Did your mother drop you on the head too many times yesterday?" She demanded in between gasps of air. She reached her foot out and kicked him on the shoulder. "Douchebag."

Did she just mimic me?! Braxton's mouth opened in astonishment as he was thrown back into his childhood when his sister used to do the same to him. Of course, his sister did it with a silly voice, while this girl was doing with Braxton's own exact voice... but he didn't quite caught that, as he was, for a moment, reliving memories that made him shiver inside out.

"That's not my voice!" Braxton whined exactly like a fifth-grader would, probably answering the girl's own question.

SPLASH!

One second he was laughing at the girl and the next one he was just as wet as her. He didn't feel her grabbing him into the water, though, it only occurred to him that his power had a mishap and he had pushed both of them into the water by accident while trying to push only her. It's what served him for using his power after the long power training session he had had that morning.

"Noooooooo!" The Carson twin screamed as he took his cellphone from his pocket to outside the water. "Great! Another cellphone I need to buy. Fuck, Ethan is going to kill me." He sighed, telling himself that one of these days he was going to learn where exactly and how he could buy one himself without the need of his older friend. "What the fuck is wrong with me? What the fuck is wrong with you?" Braxton retaliated the rather weak and slowed kick by splashing water into the girls face. "But if you want to know, my mother didn't even hold me yesterday, so yeah," Braxton stuck his tongue out and made silly faces to the brunette. "Now leave me alone, you... you... YOU!"

She looked at him and raised an eyebrow that indicated that she could obviously rest her case.

"Ha. Ha. Ha!" Sawyer responded to the screams coming from the boy. And then he started rambling and asking what was wrong with her. She could go all night listing down her flaws but not to this boy. Especially not after she got splashed with water.

"God, how sad. You poor thing. No wonder you're such a dickwad. No motherly love." She rolled her eyes and swam away from the boy. "Leave you alone? You were in my way! I said sorry but noooo, you wanted to have a go at me!" She splashed water back into his face. "Get out of the pool, silly. You're not wearing proper swimming attire."

"Hey, you started it!" Brax whined once again. "And don't splash me!" Brax splashed water at the girl's face again. "That's rude."

Hadn't he started with the splashes, though? Well, Braxton was rude, there was no way around to deny that, but if fingers were to be point, Braxton was the one that got them into the pool anyway, but it wasn't like he was ever going to accept this was his own doing, either to others or to him, his subconscious had already made up a way in which this was all the girl's fault and not Braxton's. His brain works in mysterious ways.

"Maybe YOU should get out of the pool," Braxton said while crossing his arms in his chest. "You're ugly!"

What that had anything to do with anything? Well, nothing. But nonetheless Brax knew the girl was sort of right, he should get out of the pool, but he wasn't in the mood to comply to her words. It would have felt as he lost his childish argument with her, and well, Braxton never loses, just ask him (but don't ask anybody else).

Sawyer stared at the older boy for a full minute in dumbfounded amazement, even as the water splashed her face. Though he couldn't blame him for being such an asswipe. He most certainly had the face for it.

But she did feel like he deserved a good punch in the face for calling her ugly. Though she never considered herself a classic beauty, she knew for certain she was not ugly. Sure, her personality could possibly be called ugly but she was pretty sure he wasn't talking about that.

"Are you serious? You're actually using that as your comeback?" Sawyer rolled her eyes and started swimming away from the boy. He obviously couldn't handle the fact that what little wit he had was dwindling to a midget like her. She did him a favour by moving away before her IQ dropped around him.

True, this girl wasn't particularly ugly, and Braxton does have low standards (though, he'd never admit this), but he wasn't going to tell a girl this bothering, at least to his current opinion, that she was pretty, right? Well, unless he thought had a chance to bed her.

"I happen to have very good comebacks," Braxton raised an eyebrow.

Was she leaving now? Ha! Braxton scoffed. Maybe he should leave too, but hadn't she just offended him? What's wrong with my comebacks? She was not going to have the last word on this, so propelling himself around the girl to the place just in front of her with the help of his powers, he raised his index finger at her.

"You owe me a cellphone!" He used his free hand, the one not pointing at her, to show his damaged cellphone at her. "I wouldn't be in the pool if it weren't because you were being rude, who raised you like that, huh?" He guessed, wrongly, that he could spin this into being her fault. "But you know what," he crossed his arms in his chest again. "You're kinda pretty so if you kiss me, I'll let it go."

Who ever said there exists a girl Braxton didn't think he had a chance to bed?

"You should let other people tell you different. Oh look, I'm people. And I say you don't." She shot back as she moved away.

Frowning, she turned around when he demanded she get him a phone. "Dude, I was not being rude. I was apologising because I bumped into you and I lost my hearing and then you shouted at me."

His next words made her laugh out loud. "What? No!" She didn't even let the compliment register into her head. The thought of kissing the boy who pushed her into the pool was not a savoury one. "Unless you mean you want my fist to kiss your nose, I'd be delighted."

"The people who tell me different are liars," Braxton quickly replied. "Like you, liar."

Could you blame the boy? The way he handled life was flawless: if things weren't the way he wanted them, he quickly dismissed them in some way or another, either as unimportant, or as false, such as the brunette's thoughts on Braxton's comebacks (which were, indeed, childish and terrible).

"You were shouting at me!" Braxton attempted to correct her. "Yes you are rude, you're a rude little girl, you're a mean girl."

He'd be lying if he said he didn't watch that movie, and he'd be lying more if he said he didn't like it. There was something in Regina's personality that Brax had been secretly attracted to for a long time now. Not to mention her gorgeous blonde hair, source of many of the boy's wet dreams.

"Aren't you a toughie?" Braxton splashed more water into her face. "You want to kiss me, just admit it." He crossed his arms in his chest while making a smile. "Say it, just say that and I'll go and won't even charge you for my cellphone."

"No, you're just a brat who can't accept the truth even when it's slapping you right in the face." She emphasised her sentence with a quick slap of the water in the boy's direction.

"I couldn't hear, damn it!" She furiously refuted. Sawyer paused and rolled her eyes. "Why am I even bothering defending myself?" She threw her hands up in the air, not really caring for the movie reference had she even noticed it at all.

She managed to turn before she got a face full of water and scoffed at his assumption. "Your cellphone is not my fucking problem, dick. And even if you were the last living organism in the entire universe, I would still not kiss you." In another time, honestly, she probably would have been very attracted to the boy but right now, all attraction was out of the window and all she wanted to do was punch him where it hurt most. Why she was even giving him the time of day, she didn't know.

Then again...

"You know what? Maybe I should..." she raised an eyebrow before waded over to him, forcing herself to place her hands up to his shoulder, squeezing it a little. She pushed against his shoulder so they were eye to eye and then with as swift a move she could underwater, she dragged her knee up and made contact with his stomach.

"Moron." She used her foot against him to propel herself away from him.
