A strained gasp escaped Evony's lips as Lucy continued her relentless assault on Evy's integrity as a person. Was it that hard to believe that even a petty criminal could feel affection? Evy rummaged through her mind to decipher the reasoning behind Lucy's doubt. Was it something she said earlier? Was it because she didn't sound convincing enough? Had Lucy simply given up on any sort of human connection exceeding the shallow? Theories and possibilities lined up one after the other as the girl desperately attempted to emphasise her point.
Why was this so hard? Why did Lucy need to know so badly?
"Because I won't gain anything from lying to you!" Evy pleaded, allowing the quickened breaths to escape her rosy red lips. What else could Lucy want, an encyclopaedia detailing every little reason why the Blue bird had fallen for her? Did she require a lie detector? The very notion that the tattooed beauty thought her a lying wench hurt like nothing else. Didn't her deepest and most protected feelings mater?
Every passing second was like a final warning from fate itself. Everything the thief did to convince the girl of her dream was tossed aside, rendered impotent by Lucy's sheer lack of understanding. But the threat was enough to strike her to her very core. A cold sensation crept up from the base of her spine and spread its icy tendrils into Evy's diminutive form. Lucy was willing to leave her just like that. After everything that had been confessed, after every heartbreaking admittance Evy was still left in the cold.
Her knees wobbled, hands desperately clutching the side of the desk as a shallow breath escaped her lips. There was no lie in Lucy's words, she meant it. Evy couldn't afford to lose the girl, not after everything she had gone through during her life. Losing another would just be the final nail in her coffin.
"I... Lucy I..I did it because I got jealous...", the confession forced her head low, humiliated with the admittance. Her body felt numb, and her mouth felt weak. This was her last resort. "I couldn't bear the sight of you kissing him. This perfect human, tall and handsome and everything I'm not! Look at this and compare me with that guy!" She cried out, motioning down to her body with her trembling hands. Scrawny, pale and unattractive. "You were the first person I have ever opened up to, the first person! I...I didn't want be some random girl you kept on the side..." Her breathing was now audible, breaching hyperventilation. "It was fucking stupid and I know now that you won't take me back..."she whispered, closing her eyes with the confession. Anything to block out the girl standing over her.
Manicured nails broke the skin in her dainty palms and trickling crimson seeped into the crevices of her quivering fingers. But she did not notice. It was her heart that ached.
"I'm sorry Lucy..." She whimpered, not bothering to hide her anguish any further. There was now no defence left that Lucy hadn't broken. Evy slumped onto the table with her face in her hands, shivering from the humiliating taste of defeat. That was all she had.
