Settling In (open to 403 residents)

[Jace Murphy]

Jace staggered through the door to her new dorm under the weight of her duffel bag. She couldn't see anyone in the common area, but there were several piles of personal belongings stacked against walls. She hauled her gear to the bedroom she'd been assigned and dropped her duffel to fumble with the handle. The crisp, clean room greeted her with the faint smell of cleaning solution. She dragged her rolling suitcase to the plain bureau and leaned it against the scarred wood.

Her mother was supposed to be bringing up a rug for the floor later, but for now, Jace dropped her duffel and book bag near the door and examined the room. After a moment, she dragged the bed away from the window. The last thing she wanted was the sun beating down on her first thing in the morning. The scrape of the bed's feet on the floor gave her chills, and she shook them off to slide the nightstand across the room as well. She tried to move the bureau to take the bed's place near the window, but it proved to be to heavy for her to move safely. One dangerous wobble towards falling on top of her and she decided to seek help.

"Anybody home?" she called, poking her head into the common area. The doors were all shut, and she hadn't heard much movement, but it was move in day. Someone had to be around somewhere.

Sawyer had the day off and had chosen to spend it indoors this time. Sleep. Sleep was just...heavenly.

That was, until somebody decided her sleep was not at all important by scraping things here and there, waking the five foot voice mimic. Rubbing her eyes, Sawyer stretched a little before climbing out of bed in her Marvel printed boy shorts and a plain black tank top.

Padding out of her room, she heard somebody call out.

"Yeah. Was trying to sleep but sure, why not answer your call." Sawyer's voice had taken on the new girl's, brought on by her sleep deprivation. "Augh." She grunted, clearing her throat and concentrating on her own voice. "Voice mimic," she explained, pointing at her throat and sratching the side of her head.

"Newb, what're you doing in there? Orgy?"

"Whoa, cool!" Jace laughed, hearing her own voice come from her roommate's mouth. Realizing she probably sounded childish, she throttled the rising insecurity in her throat. She rubbed the back of her neck, grinning sheepishly. "Sorry to wake you. I didn't think anyone'd be sleeping at this hour."

She blushed deeply at the word orgy and shook her head. "I'm not new," she answered instead. "I switched rooms. I really clashed with one of the girls in my old suite so I thought I'd move to avoid the conflict."

She decided she'd hold off on talking about the conflict being an unrequited crush on said former roommate until she could figure out her new suite-mates' sentiments. She looked over her shoulder into her bedroom and shrugged. "I was just trying to move this gigantic monstrosity so my room didn't feel so lopsided."

She stepped back and gestured to the blank wall across from the door. Her bed, nightstand, and desk all crowded the left hand side of the room. She'd have to fix that, too. Maybe the desk could go on the right after she moved the bureau...

"Sorry!" she said again, snapping out of her wandering thoughts. "I meant: Could you maybe help me move this?"

Sawyer gave a small huff of laughter at the other girl's amusement, even though she was still not used to people being amused by it. She was usually met with annoyance or disgust in some people.

"Yeah...I'm Snorlax, I sleep anywhere and at any time." She rubbed her eyes tiredly with a yawn, emphasising her point.

The blush was an unexpected turn of events and Sawyer smirked. "I don't judge. I'd join but I'd probably sleep on one of your participants." She teased before nodding at the information. "Did she disapprove of your extra curricular activities?" Her smirk deepened, so proud of herself for making someone uncomfortable.

Tilting her head to the side to see through the door, Sawyer had to actually take a few steps to the front to actually see what the girl meant.

"Ah. Eh. It's not so bad. And why not. I guess I can sleep later." She shrugged, scratching her neck a little before approaching the room.

"I'm Sawyer. We have two other roommates in here. One's Bluejay and the other...is very quiet. Or she's gone or something. Either way, I don't know who she is."

The flu had finally caught onto the Evony, shoving its gross tentacles into her body and forcing the dainty little thief to battle a major migraine and a running nose. The girl had been bedridden for two days, a personal hell considering how fidgety she got when she was in one place for too long. There was only so much the sniffling swindler could do in her room to keep her amused; organising her jewellery and watching late night 80s comedies were just about everything Evy could manage at that moment.

It came as a shock when a certain Australian waltzed right into her room to check up on her, something which equally baffled the Blue bird as much as it did secretly please her. Yes, Lucy Serrano was a sympathetic human being after all and the past two days had involved the occasional visit by the tattooed beauty. Today had been no different, albeit a bit worse considering Evy's weakened state. Water and painkillers were in constant supply, but, as corny as it sounds, Lucy's presence was what gave the porcelain skinned acrobat proper comfort.

It had been an hour or so into recuperating on the comfortable single bed did Evy finally muster the energy to make proper conversation. Frasier had just finished, so the T.V was muted. The silence was good, but Lucy's accent was a personal drug, one Evy needed a fix of.

"Sorry in advance if you get sick..." She mumbled, tracing her fingers against the cerulean locks of hair in an attempt to keep her hands preoccupied. As much as she enjoyed touching Lucy, the thief wasn't going to risk spreading her germs...regardless of how much the Australian did or didn't care. "Urgh, on a scale of one to ten how gross do I look?" Evy asked, pale lips curled into a little grin as she cocked a brow at Lucy.

Soon enough, their conversation was quelled when a stranger's voice broke the atmosphere outside. Evy shuffled in the bed, furrowing her brow before releasing a deep sigh. Apparently Sawyer had heard it first.

Glancing up at Lucy the thief pursed her lips, attempting to listen in without straining her mind too much. Something about a new roommate? Strange. Evony didn't even know what had happened to the two other girls. "Maybe I'll check up on what's happening..." She whispered, offering Lucy a weak smile before slowly propping her pyjama clad body onto her elbows. The Blue Bird wasn't so sure what petty drama would ensue if Lucy simply walked out of her room...imagine Sawyer's face.

Slipping out of the sheets and rubbing her head, the girl gingerly slinked over on bare feet, slowly opening her door to see what this new development was. With her body still halfway between her room and the common room she gazed out with bloodshot eyes, first seeing Sawyer's marvelled ass and then the female Goliath standing next to her.

"Oh woah...you're tall..." Evony croaked innocently, gazing up at the new girl who towered over both her and Sawyer. Damn, who invited Titania to the building?

Every so often when the Australian was bored, she visited number 403. Two of her friends lived there, so why not.

But on this particular day, Sawyer must have been down and out, because when she knocked on the paint splattered door, she didn't answer. So she went to the proverbial next best thing in the room. The thing that happened to be sick as hell. Oh, the urge to back track and walk right out - Lucy hated the very idea of potentially being sick. But she'd walked in anyway and procured the desk chair for herself, dragging it back beside the bed and kicking her feet up on the mattress.

"I better not, though." She grumbled slightly, folding her arms and glancing towards her with a grin. She swung on the back legs of the chair idly, finding balance with her feet up on the bed. "You're so far off the scale it actually hurts to look at you." Lucy smirked anyway, glancing in her direction despite the apparent pain she was literally facing.

The sound of a familiar voice had already caught Lucy's attention. Because finally.

She simply shrugged when Evony decided to get up and check on the commotion. The Australian didn't really care where she was or who saw her there. So after another spare moment Lucy decided to forgo the fun of keeping her own balance and get up to see what was going on. Peering through the door, the eldest Serrano rolled her eyes at Sawyer; "Look who finally got up and forgot to put on pants."

"Something like disapproval..." Jace said, frowning down at her sneakers. Something a bit like loud, overly-dramatic modesty whenever Jace entered the suite. She'd never thought bullying could happen at Hammel, but Holly had shown her otherwise. The last few months of spring term had been a nightmare.

"Not orgies, though!" she added quickly, covering her eyes with her hand and laughing nervously. "God."

When the girl offered to help, Jace lowered her hand and flashed a grin. "Great! Thanks!"

"I'm Jace, good to meet you," she said, extending her hand. "Hydrokinesis, hence the...um...redecorating. Though I would probably be hanging out the window in a rainstorm."

She tucked a stray lock of hair behind her ear and studied the layout of her room once more. She stepped back to take her place on one side of the dresser and started to direct her new roommate when another voice sounded across the common room. Jace stared in unabashed awe as a lithe, blue-haired girl joined them. The effect was ruined when Jace took in her sickly expression. And of course, she loomed over the two girls like a weed.

"I get that a lot," she said. "Jace. And no, I have not nor will I ever play basketball. Eughh, sweating. And sorry if I bothered you moving my stuff earlier. You wouldn't be Bluejay, would you?"

She asked the last with a glance to Sawyer for confirmation on the name, but by that point another girl joined them. "It's a party! Are you the last roommate?" she asked, pushing down a tide of rising anxiety. She was beginning to wonder if there'd been a mistake in her room reassignment. All of these girls looked at least a couple of years older than her. She suddenly felt a little childish in her enthusiasm, and the last thing she needed was to be the "kid" of the suite.

"Eh...bitches be cray. Like that explains why I'm in a room full of them, right?" Sawyer teased before laughing at how mildly scandalised the other girl seemed to be at her joke about orgies. How old was she? She sure got the tall gene.

Shaking her hand, Sawyer nodded with a small laugh. "That's unhealthy." She teased as she looked around the room to see if she could do anything to spruce things up a bit.

When she was about to move to help Jace with the drawers, she heard a familiar voice and found two very familiar people. Aah, what a sight for sore eyes.

"My bitches!" She slurred a little, still on the sleepy side. She waved them down and looked down at her exposed skin, then winked at Lucy. "Look who noticed."

Turning to Jace when she mentioned basketball, Sawyer snapped her fingers in consternation. "I was totally going to challenge you to a game of horse. I clearly have the advantage." She gestured to her short self with a smirk.

Seeing Bluejay looking a little sick got Sawyer wincing. "Dude...you look morbid. I could have sworn you looked fine last night. And yeah, she's totally Bluejay. But maybe...a more green coloured avian friend would be more suited right now." Sawyer joked. Maybe not so humorously. The girl really did look a little hellish.

"And no, Luce is Bluejay's Mistress. As in, Luce owns Bluejay." Sawyer laughed, suddenly realising something. "The fuck are you doing...did you spend the night here without even attempting to wake me up? DID YOU SPEND THE NIGHT WITH EVONY?"

It took a moment of quiet reflection, idly standing by her door with messy hair and a face of death, for the sickly thief to put two and two together and conclude what She-Hulk was doing in their dorm. Looks like she was the newbie. The little revelation brought a weak smile to Evy's lips and she slowly nodded as towering girl introduced herself. Sawyer's casual interjections and Lucy's eventual appearance made the situation even more enjoyable, one which actually distracted her from the metaphorical axe in her skull.

"Yesss...that would probably be me." Evony slowly confirmed, blinking away an eyelash before glancing at Lucy. "Well, it's a better name than Frosta." She shrugged, leaning against her doorway before scanning the rest of the dorm room. There was luggage here and there, had they been warned about this new addition? Probably, although neither Sawyer nor Evony would have taken notice.

The Blue Bird found herself cringing at the momentary limelight, maybe they should stop looking at her and focus on other things, like Sawyer's butt. Taking in a deep breath she glanced back at the voice mimic and wrinkled her nose. "I have no idea, yesterday it was just a running nose and today...I feel like shit." She gloomily mused, not bothering to even come up with a quip. Her head hurt too much for that.

What was said next actually offered a brief chuckle to escape Evony's pale lips, a hoarse chuckle but one nonetheless. Glancing back at the Australian the porcelain skinned thief pursed her lips and smiled, wondering what Jace thought of all this.

"Yes, it's true. Sawyer never lies, it's a side effect of her power. Believe everything she says." Evony smirked, raising a brow before lazily combing her fingers through the unkempt mess of cerulean hair. Oh, the thoughts of Lucy being a mistress were too much for Evy's frail mind then, so she remained silent with nothing more than a little grin on her lips.

"Ooh I think you've hurt someone's feelings..." Evony pouted, nudging Lucy's arm before offering Sawyer a consolatory bow. "It's not you Sawyer, it's me." Evy grinned, oh...this was beginning to remind her of her first day in room 403. Someone was bound to get naked. She knew it.

"You know me, I always notice." Lucy shrugged. Well, everyone else was staring. Why not be the blunt one in all this? Sawyer's ass was nothing new to her eyes.

"Fine." Lucy begrudgingly shook her head; "Frosta is too awesome a nickname for you anyway."

Hearing Sawyer respond to the sick-looking Evony forced a grin to Lucy's face. "Right? She looks so fucked up and gross right now." Lucy laughed, pushing away from the door. The chick in front was pretty tall, there was no denying that. Taller than the three of them, but Lucy was still pretty thankful she wasn't as short as the other two. "Ah, and Saw owns me. It's a bit of a fucked up chain of command, really." She shrugged anyway, speaking pretty nonchalantly through the whole conversation.

"These bitches?" Her roommates? "God no." Lucy replied with a scoff. She was insanely glad not to have these two as roommates; nothing would ever get done. And she'd hate trashing her own common room. "Good bloody luck to you, though."

She almost stumbled forward when Evony nudged her arm, running her hand along her skin as she felt her tattoos shifting. They glared at her briefly in unison - evidently, they didn't like being pushed. "I was waiting for you, baby. But you sleep so late... Lately." Ah, poor choice of words as she walked forth and poked Sawyer's arm. "I gotta hang out with someone to pass the time, though the giant one looks like she'd be decent company." With that, Lucy waved her free hand in Jace's direction. The giant one? A better name was forming in her head too slowly for her liking.

"Do you like the paint job, Hyldnir?" Lucy asked Jace openly, gesturing around to the occasional stint of brightly coloured paint that had been thrown about the room. Sawyer's door in particular sported a rather bright shade of neon pink.

Jace felt a little like an owl, swiveling her head to follow the conversation as it moved around her between the other three girls. She tried desperately to keep up and looked for an opening back into the conversation. From what she could gather some offense had been committed by Bluejay and the girl who’d joined them after. And Sawyer wasn’t wearing pants. She glanced automatically when the girl with the Australian accent mentioned it and looked away again quickly. And then the mention of their ‘chain of command’ had her raising her eyebrows in alarm. Maybe she would just spend the year locked in her room…

“I’ve got some cold medicine, if you want some,” Jace said, jumping back into the conversation anyways. “It’s still in my bag—“ she kicked her duffel “—but I’ve got lots of it. And my dad always sends me extra. I have a bad habit of hanging out outside in rainstorms, which can be problematic around this time of year.”

“You can’t lie?” she asked Sawyer, cocking her head. “That’s a weird side effect…not like…in a bad way. I mean, I just get wicked headaches and sometimes I get all wobbly like I’ve been on a boat for too long.”

She barely held back her sigh of relief when she realized that only two of them were going to be living with her. Jace wasn’t sure how much innuendo she could take on a daily basis. Though from the look of it, the third girl would be with them a lot of the time as well. She felt the blood draining from her face. Good luck? Oh lord. At least they seemed to be…ah…friendlier than her previous roommates.

When Bluejay shoved the Australian girl forward, Jace thought she saw something move on the girl’s skin, but before she could ask the girl motioned to the random splattering of paint all over the common room walls. She’d been so absorbed in moving her things earlier that she’d completely missed her new roommate’s ‘decorations.’ Hopefully they weren’t going to get in trouble for it, but Jace wasn’t about to say something to piss anyone off. “It’s kinda cool,” she said, poking her head into the hallway to survey the rest of the paint.

"I guess you do, and that's why you're my number one." The brunette turned and gave her ass a little wriggle, unaware of her new roommate's preference.

Nodding at Lucy's 'chain of commands' statement, the voice mimic couldn't help but feel the love for her melanokinetic friend for always managing to indulge in her crazy. "It is though. We're just basically dominatrices in our own rights. Except for Bluejay over there. That one's just whipped, aren't you baby boo." Sawyer cooed teasingly at Evony.

Blowing a kiss in Evony's direction at her tease, Sawyer nodded enthusiastically at Jace's naivete. Oh the poor girl had a lot to learn about sarcasm it seemed. It really is too bad that she was going to learn it from the likes of Sawyer.

The poke made her dramatically wince and retract her arm from her friend. "Damn it, bony woman. Keep ye paws off me. I'm fragile!" She hissed before shrugging. "Fine, I suppose you're off the hook but you Bluejay...you're in for some trouble for being more entertaining than watching me sleep." Sawyer jabbed two fingers in her eye's direction before stabbing it in the air in Evony's direction.

"Yeah, Luce is always looking out for me. Giving me things she thinks I like. Like hot pink paint on my door. I totally love hot pink paint on my door." Sawyer smirked. At least she had added more stuff with black and dark red pen; sketches of skulls and snakes and tattoo-ey tribal marks...it looked half decent.

"Nah, I think she just sneezed. Bless you, you accented freak of nature."

A playful growl rippled across Evy's lips at the unsurprising crassness of Lucy's remark, trust her to smash the ice and scare the new girl. "Oh psssh. Sawyer'd still bang this regardless." Evy smirked, motioning down at her body and tossing Lucy's insult out the window and giving the voice mimic's behind another glance. How had she never noticed that before? Well, at least her roommate had something going for her other than wholesome titties.

Shrugging her dainty shoulders the sickly thief sniffled away, cocking a brow at the Australian before swivelling her attention over to Sawyer. "Yes, totally whipped. These two share me like I'm some slutty toy, makes me feel uber special." She sighed, offering Jace a little grin before cocking her brow at the girl's gullibility, oh now that was going to be played with in this dorm room. There was no questioning that.

Hearing news of free drugs caught the fragile Blue bird's attention, forcing her to perk up a bit at the offer. Now wasn't this new roommate just dandy? "If you're offering, I'll take it!" Evony weakly grinned, taking a step towards the kitchen counter and refilling her cup with the bubbling water. In truth, Evy would've preferred to remain in the background during the moment, she was simply too exhausted and dull to keep up with the other two scoundrels. But, soon enough she was caught in Saywer's playful web of words.

"What can I say Sawyer? I guess our Australian friend prefers the sick as balls foreigners to sleeping beauties." She winked, shrugging her shoulders to the theatrical glare. Her attention turned to the matter at hand and she took a generous sip of water, anything to moisten her parched throat. She was so flat in her attention to the conversation that she missed Lucy's remark, although it wouldn't surprise her if it was some well meaning insult or backhanded compliment.

But she thought it best to quell any tension before a certain newbie's feelings were possibly hurt.

"I'd watch out for Lucy. She broke my nose first time meeting her." Evy solemnly nodded, feeling almost humbled by resurrecting the rather funny little chapter in room 403. Evy was never going to let that die.

At thee question of what she'd called her, Lucy smirked her way passed the lack of intimidation. "Google it," Lucy replied, with a laugh and a simple wave of her hand. "By the time figure it out I'll be so far outta here even your freakishly long legs won't help you catch me." And she laughed at that too, until her attention was dragged away to a conversation between Evony and Sawyer.

"You're all foreigners to me." She pointed out. There, it could be either of them!

But breaking her nose? "We talked about that, right?" Lucy asked Evony, pointing over towards Sawyer quickly. She was taking the blame and she seemed to be okay with it back then. Of course, the Australian knew she was always obviously at fault - she was the ink manipulator after all. But it was too funny to let up in her mind.

And with a small turn, she was looking back at Sawyer again. "Oi, you." Yeah you, she grinned. "You gonna hang with the half-breed," She pointed towards Jace, "And leave me with the Russian crazy?" And she pointed towards Evony, before lowering her voice a touch; "You're from Russia, right? Or was it some other European shithole?"

As the conversation spiraled into uncomfortable territory Jace decided yes, she’d definitely be spending a lot of her free time in her room. Once she got it set up the way she wanted. Which means she needed help from someone with or without innuendo. She knelt to fish around for her cold medicine and held it out for Bluejay, but she nearly dropped it in shock at the next comment about their supposed sex lives. Heat rose in her cheeks as she stood upright again.

She bristled at Lucy’s remark despite Sawyer and Bluejay’s reassurances, but as the Australian did have a point—she wasn’t sure what was said even though she was pretty sure it was insulting (she’d definitely have to get her laptop hooked up as soon as she was behind her closed bedroom door). And exerting energy that might cause her to sweat lose precious water was not something Jace had any desire to do. The prospect of a potential broken nose wasn’t too exciting either.

“I just wanted help moving my furniture,” she interrupted before they could desert her, trying but failing to keep the hard edge from her voice. She compromised by not making eye contact, worried about the sullen anger she could feel building behind her eyes. Already her subconscious was chanting insecurities in her ear. From being an outsider in an already established clique to being a goofy tall freak, it listed them all on repeat.

“I can go find someone else if you guys are too busy.”


And after that she was going straight to the pond. She needed to go for a swim to blow off some steam if this was any indication. It had only been a few days since the last rainstorm, but she was already getting irritable.
