You look like you know what you're doing. (Connor)

Despite it not having been his original intention in the invitation, really, Connor saw no reason why he couldn’t change that. He hadn’t really had what could be called a girlfriend before. He’d had female friends, most of which were also racetrack brats that knew a barn and a horse like the back of their hands. But they weren’t girlfriends. Then he’d had girls at school that hung around him in the hopes of meeting ‘ponies’ and to leach off of the fact that, yes, his parents owned good racehorses.
Charlie didn’t really fit into either category. Which meant that going on a date was okay, right? She wasn’t what Curtis called ‘golddigging’, nor was she really a friend... yeah. Yeah, this made sense. Kind of.
Her surprise was met with what Connor hoped was a gentle smile. “Yeah. Seriously.” She was pretty. Why was this such a shock to her? Didn’t she have guys chasing her? If not, he didn’t understand why. As to her questions, he momentarily looked blank. He’d been to school dances with girls before, but that was different. And it was usually within a group. This was... “Uh... me neither. Not really. But no, you don’t need to. We can go like this. ... Unless you want to!” He wasn’t going to stop her if she wanted to get out of what she’d been using as gym attire. He didn’t particularly care that he was still wearing his gym kit. “And yes, I’m sure. You’re really pretty, Charlie. And really nice.” That alone was enough to justify a date, right?
“I’m not doing it to be nice, promise.” The thought hadn’t really occurred to him. Wasn’t it sort of mean to ask someone on a date with no intention of anything else? Just to be friendly? That seemed like a bad idea to him.
Her request brought him back to Earth, and he thought about it before tilting his head curiously. “Okay. Whatever it is, yes.” Close enough.
The favor wasn’t an expected one, but nice nonetheless. As soon as Charlie’s arms were around him, Connor automatically folded his own around her, keeping her close to him. She even smelled good. Not like that gross perfumey stuff the girls liked to spray in the dorms, but just... natural.
He had to struggle a little to hear her, but he managed to catch it. “I wouldn’t laugh at you, Charlie. Not ever.” With that, he let her slide away when she pulled back, and gently wrapped his fingers around her offered hand. “Ready, then?”
