Despite his superb low-light vision, even the half-elf’s eyes were no match for the sudden magical darkness. The complete lack of light was disorientating, but his hearing was still sharp and he was able to make out the awkward sounds of movement nearby. Pulling up the hood of his cloak, the druid muttered a spell aimed at his snake companion, the serpent giving a low hiss as it suddenly started to grow to the size of a gigantic anaconda.
When the lights returned the druid’s cloak made him difficult to focus on, his outline blurred and his exact form difficult to make out as it blended with the background. The light-stunned gnoll’s swipe with the short sword missed its mark, Gunnar easily stepping back from it as his snake struck at the gnoll. Fangs sank into the beast’s thigh as it was quickly dragged it to the ground and coiled around, constricted with the air forced out of its lungs.
The majority of the gnolls seemed to have become fixated on the obvious fighters in the tavern, so it was relatively easy for the druid to pick his way around the outskirts to the door. He tried to shove it open, but it wasn’t budging. With his giant serpent covering him, Gunnar knelt in front of the door and placed his palms on the cold ground before quickly saying a prayer to Mielikki.
Moments later and vines started to appear out of the ground, splitting between the wood and making it creak and groan as they worked to break through the door. A few moments later still and there was a loud rumbling from outside; the sound of heavy footsteps charging before the weight of a massive animal slammed against the door, weakening it yet more. The druid was convinced that with one more slam like that they would be out. Now there was just the rest of the gnolls to deal with.
