The library wasn't quite silent, although in Marnie's experience that was fairly common this time of day. Classes were out and the place was starting to fill with students doing research or seeking new reading material. Most of them were successful at keeping their voices down, but as always when teenagers got together to work on projects or even simply ran into friends, some level of chatter was to be expected.
Not that she minded, really. Marnie wasn't here to study - well, she sort of was, since studying had been the pretense under which she had agreed to meet Lucas here. But realistically? She knew they weren't going to get anything done.
Marnie wound her way around tables and past shelves, peering around excitedly for a glimpse of the boy. Lucas had texted that he'd already arrived, so now it was only a matter of tracking him down. After a few minutes of searching, she finally spotted him at a table near one of the library's high windows and rushed over, a smile lighting up her face.
"There you are!" Marnie took the seat next to him and dropped her books on the table. She gave the boy a quick peck on the cheek - which still felt a little surreal, but mostly delightful - and began rifling through one of her folders.
"I just got out of art class," she told him, too focused on locating the correct paper to monitor the volume of her voice. From the folder she pulled a square of paper with a bird painted on it and a post-it note attached, bearing the teacher's notes. "Check this out - so I thought I just painted a regular cardinal, right? But I must've gotten some of the colors mixed up because, look here, the teacher gave me good marks for 'thinking outside the box' and 'creative use of contrasting colors,' which, I don't know, it looks normal to me." She paused in her chatter and squinted at the image in her hands. "Except the wings are kinda wonky, but that's just because I'm not that great at painting."
