Axe was one person she was referring to, but also some others who wouldn’t put up with Lucas no matter what. His roommate, Rylee, was pretty strong herself, despite her small size. And Safia…Marcus feared to see what condition Luke ended up in if he ever crossed her path. He wouldn’t even have to make a bad impression with that dragon-girl, she’d cut him down to size before he had a chance to offend her.
Marcus had no idea why that made her more appealing to him. Somehow.
Marcus scoffed at his excuses. “You just have an answer for everything, don’t you?” Whatever, if that’s the way he wanted to be, then let him. Marcus didn’t have to listen or pay attention to a word of it. Why should she trust the word of someone who never seemed to take anything seriously?
Again, Marcus had to reflect how much that line of thinking sounded like the stuff his grandfather would drench him in. Maybe she should go easier on the guy? Well, wasn’t that why she was helping him in the first place? It’d leave a bad taste in her mouth if she just left him there to flail. Even if Luke was a dick, that didn’t mean Marcus had to be one too.
Or maybe he spoke too soon? Marcus blinked at the sudden apology, having expected that to be the last thing to come from the boy’s mouth. Her arm lowered slowly, having not received the pants she was supposed to help Luke into, and her eyes did as well. She had no idea how she was supposed to react to that. “…thank you,” she said finally, lifting her gaze to meet his again. “It means a lot that you said that.” Even if he didn’t mean it, it at least showed that he had the decency to say it when it needed to be said.
Marcus slipped into a thin smile. “Okay, humpty-dumpty, let’s get you put back together already.” She chuckled lightly and took the liberty of grabbing those pants herself. “How do you wanna do this?”
