"Well, let you be assured that the feeling is entirely mutual." Samantha always did this. She made sure that Sydney never forgot that she was different. That she didn't belong. But she had stopped caring about that long ago. She would rather be special and alone than someone who cared more about what other people thought of them. Sydney simply wasn't meant to be that person and she was far happier that way. Samantha flung those words at her like they were a weapon when in truth Sydney considered them more akin to a gift.
Sydney laughed though as her sister tried to imply that she somehow had more options. "Wow, denial really is a powerful force," she managed to say through her laughter. That was one thing that Samantha could never take away from her. She knew her future was bright. She could go on to do anything she wanted. And that wasn't some statement of optimism, like mothers who tell their children they'll be president someday if they want it enough, it was a fact. She could study science, medicine, law, economics, politics, mathematics... anything. She was genuinely capable and Samantha hated that knowledge - but she could never steal it away from Sydney. That was why Sydney always won these fights of theirs.
It was difficult to bite back the urge to laugh all the more as Sam mentioned her empathy. She didn't understand how Sydney's ability worked at all, that much was obvious. "Oh yes, because looking pretty is so very vital to understanding a person and decorating the walls with posters of actors and your favorite color is so very telling of what an emotionally complex person you are. My mistake." The sarcasm that dripped from her voice said she was anything but sorry.
"Because you are the only person in the world, in this building even, who has done charity work. Do you need a trophy for focusing on someone other than yourself? One moment, I can get one for you, I have more than enough to spare one to help inflate your ego just a little further." Sydney rolled her eyes. Typical Samantha. She didn't even know why she was still standing here having the same exact fight they always had once again. It's not like anything ever changed with them. Yet as always, her temper got the better of her and she kept talking, flinging insults right back at her sister. Sydney just had to have the last word.
"Of course, maybe that's why appearances are so important to you, Samantha. Because maybe you finally realized how little of substance you have underneath that. Look at that, finally a breakthrough. You're right, I understand you so much better now." With that, she turned away and walked towards the door.
