Occupational Questions
1. Do you have a job? What is it? Do you like it? If no job, where does your money come from?
I do have a job. I'm the psychiatrist at the Hammel Institute, where I have worked for twenty-three years. I like my job quite a bit, even when it is stressful or life becomes absurd.
2. What is your boss or employer like? (Or publisher, or agent, or whatever.)
Yvette cares a great deal about the students and Hammel as a whole. It isn't easy to be Headmistress, and I don't take that away from her. However, we do not always see eye-to-eye about policy matters.
3. What are your co-workers like? Do you get along with them? Any in particular? Which ones don't you get along with?
My coworkers are, by and large, good people. Many of them are also alumni of Hammel which gives us a bond with the school, with the students, and with each other. I am also pleased to say that I get along with most of my coworkers, because we are friendly to one another, and, addressing that bond from a moment ago, essentially everyone cares deeply for the students as a priority and one another as a matter of self-care and maintaining energy in the face of some of the more difficult students. I am proud to say that many of my closest friends are also my coworkers, such as Chase, James, and Kateri, and that many of my friends who do not work with me used to, such as Anya, Clarisse, and Claude.
4. What is something you had to learn that you hated?
I've never particularly cared for dancing, but I had to learn that as a boy.
5. Do you tend to save or spend your money? Why?
I do both. I have more than sufficient savings, and my bills are always paid on time. Because of that, I feel comfortable spending on my partner, my friends, my family, and myself when necessary. I am not an extravagant person, but I am comfortable.

Firsts
1. Who was your first love?
Joshua Bernstein. I dated before him, and I had relationships, but he was the first person with whom I can say I felt love as opposed to affection, attraction, and caring.
2. Who was your first kiss and when?
Maggie Donovan, when we were about fifteen.
3. Who was your first prom date?
Hammel didn't have a prom, but Maggie Donovan was the first person with whom I attended a dance.
4. Who was your first room mate?
My roommate at Hammel was a telekinetic named Michael.
5. What was your first job?
Volunteering at a hospital.
6. What was your first car?
A blue VW-Bus, which I still have. I don't drive it regularly.
7. When did you go to your first funeral?
I don't remember exactly how old I was, but I was young. Anytime someone died who attended our parish, my family attended the funeral, and we had a very age-diverse group.
8. How old were you when you first moved away from your hometown?
I was twelve. I moved to attend Hammel, which was a boarding school several states over.
9. Who was your first grade teacher?
Father Doyle.
10. Where did you go on your first ride on an airplane?
To California for a vacation and to visit family.
11. Where did you go for your first date and who was it with?
Maggie Donovan again. We didn't go anywhere special for our first date, just into town for lunch and a movie.
12. When you snuck out of your house for the first time, who was it with?
I never snuck out of my house.
13. Who was your first best friend and are you still friends with them?
This is a complicated question because of defining "best friend." I don't think I had a best friend before Hammel; I had a group of friends from my neighborhood and from school but I don't think anyone was my best friend. Then Maggie was my closest friend and my girlfriend. Then Greg in college before I met Josh, who has been consistently my best friend for three-and-a-half decades, while also being my partner for the past two years (and for several when we first met).
14. Who was the first person to send you flowers?
People don't typically send me flowers as a romantic gesture; they tend to be part of condolence gifts.
15. Where did you live the first time you moved out of your parents house?
I lived at Hammel when I first left my parents' house, but I still technically lived with them. The same went for when I lived in NYU housing as a college student. When I attended medical school, I had an apartment with Josh, and that was the first time I had permanent housing apart from my parents, as opposed to seasonal school-based housing.
16. Who is the first person you call when you have a bad day?
Josh.
17. Who's wedding were you in the first time you were a bridesmaid or a groomsmen?
Most of the early weddings for friends didn't have large wedding parties. The most prominent one in my mind is my sister's wedding.
18. What is the first thing you do in the morning?
I turn off the alarm before slipping into the bathroom to shower and shave.
19. What was your first career choice?
To be a psychiatrist. I did not have imaginative career choices, and I am pleased to have achieved my goal.
20. What was your first sport?
I didn't play sports as a child, but I did love to swim.
