A Strange New Life (Open)

Lani smiled as her mood seemed to lighten. He blinked with shock when she thrust her dog at him and told him to smile. He juggled the wriggling for a moment and glanced up his face an expression mixed with shock and confusion. He managed to pop a smile out before the dog attacked his face. "Ah wait," he laughed, he hoped she hadn't caught him in that awkward transition state. "I wasn't ready!"

He laughed and bent his head away from the tongue, this little guy was too cute! "Woah," he scratched his head trying to quell the puppy. He was caught off guard and wasn't sure how to feel about it. It was odd, he didn't normally get caught off guard. He looked at her for a moment, she was so uptight but then she had moments where she was spontaneous. It was fair to say Lani was intrigued. "See, no worries, life is fun, enjoy it." He grinned.

"You're silly," he told the dog and got distracted for a moment. He glanced back at Jenny when she spoke again. He picked the dog up and hummed. He blinked confused for a moment then realized what she was probably thinking. He put the dog back in Jenny's arms and went to the window leaning on the sill. He opened it with a thought and stuck his head out. "Well," he pulled himself back in, "I have a feeling we're going to have some pretty peculiar weather for the next year or so." He grinned and pointed his thumb out the window, "Now that is cool." It was only lightly snowing but it was a mighty thing to accomplish for so soon. He smiled, he was sure that if anything she would graduate before him, especially wince she's more likely to try hard. Lani felt a sudden sense of insecurity. Perhaps he should try harder...

Jenny shrugged her slender shoulders and sat on the floor in front of Lani. Her puppy jumped on her and sat in her lap, she petted him softly and yawned with her other hand. She wondered if Lani was single or if he wanted a girlfriend or one of those guys who were with different girls every month. She didn't think he was the kind to be without sex until marriage like the guys Jenny knew in New York.

"It's not that much while I control it," said Jenny, "When I really freaked out I made a tornado. It's silly though why I freaked out. I found out my best friend cheated with my boyfriend and I got angry, it started raining and a tornado showed up in Times Square."

He watched her from the windowsill. He kicked himself up on the ledge, as at home in his precarious perch as he was in his room. His feet kicked absently against the stone under the window. He smiled absently wondering what Jenny's past had been like, she seemed like the type that his procrastinating and class skipping... and failing and his whole not caring attitude would annoy intensely. He held back a laugh at the thought, he really hoped he didn't scare her away.

Lani glanced out the window over his shoulder, "So what?" He said bluntly. "So it's not much now, so what? You just got your power you can't expect too have a handle on it after day one." He smiled encouragingly. At least she was trying, Lani was still kind of winging it. He fell silent and listened. He pulled a foot up onto the ledge and leaned his back against the side of the window getting more comfortable but never taking his eyes off of her. He frowned, "Well that's no good. But if that is a silly reason to get upset I'll eat my shoe." He looked at her, "Its lucky for him that you didn't know me when this happened. I know if that had been my sister I would rip him limb from limb, and that would be without my power." He said his voice growing with anger and his fists clenching. Just the thought made him livid, and that man, Jenny, from what he could tell was an amazing woman, why on earth would a man feel the desire to cheat on someone like that.

Lani stopped for a moment and let his head cool, what right did he have talking about morals anyways? He shook his head, "Well obviously he wasn't good enough for you." He searched for a change in topic, "So you're from New York? I think I remember seeing that tornado on the news. I've never been there. So did you go to one of those fancy prep schools?" He asked curiously, she didn't seem like the kind of person who came from the inner city. Lani had always wanted to go to New York, it was like the Hollywood of thievery.
