The courtyard was one of AJ's favorite places. Well, besides the library. She'd taken one of the books she'd most recently gotten from the library and tucked it safely in her book bag before trekking to the courtyard and settling down in the grass under a tree. There were a few stray students around, but it was quiet enough for her to read and even if it wasn't, she was fairly good at blocking all noises out when it came to literature. She could get lost in the pages. Nobody usually bothered her and she got some reading done. It was perfect in her opinion. She could not worry about her power, which really didn't seem to go haywire unless she was particularly near people. That meant she could let go and not fight to control it.

She let out a sigh as she turned the page, glancing up for a moment to glance around.

There was a disturbance in the force. Or rather, his personal bubble. He could feel it, despite his eyes being closed. It was like ripples, stretching outward and growing, as pebbles were plopped into his little aura pond. What did the samurai dudes call it? Ma-ai?

Oh well, that didn't matter. What mattered was that there was someone close by who had disturbed his tree-napping. He opened his eyes and cocked his head over, looking down through the foliage at the trespasser.

A girl?

A cute little brunette girl. Totally his type.

Not like them self-righteous bitches or chicks who dyed their hair weird colors.

Oriel shuffled and twisted himself to lie on his stomach on the branch he was napping on and directed his attention down at the girl. "Hey, cutie. This spot's taken." To add some flavor to the greeting, he stuck out his tongue in a half-playful, half-ornery manner.

AJ jumped as she heard a voice and she looked around frantically to see nobody around and that only meant that they were up. She glanced up putting a hand on top of her book to see a guy above her, cockily sticking out his tongue. "Sorry, I didn't realize that somebody was actually in the tree..." she trailed off. She felt no no need to respond to the pet name and looked down at her book again. She wasn't entirely sure, but she didn't think that this guy was somebody she wanted to be having a conversation with and she wasn't really supposed to be getting in a conversation with anybody, at least in her opinion. She didn't want to manipulate anybody and the second she let her guard down it would happen.

Whether or not this girl intended to manipulate Oriel, the mischievous little boy had already set his sights on her as a plaything. For what, only time would tell, but her shy attitude only made him want to poke her more.

"Gotta learn to look up sometimes." He sneered a little and let his arm hand down, swinging over her head. Oriel snickered a little. "There ain't just angels up here in the sky." He stuck his tongue out, again.

Part of AJ wanted to tell the guy to leave her alone, but she wasn't rude like that and he was probably harmless. She just wanted to read and he was interrupting and she didn't want to lose control of her powers. Even when people did their worst, she couldn't bring herself to purposefully use her power against them. It just wasn't in her.

She looked up at his sneer, watching his arms swing over his head. "What are you doing up in a tree anyway?" she asked, once again ignoring his other comment as he stuck out his tongue. It was childish.

Oriel flashed back to the first time he met Ava. It was kind of like this, only she was more pleasant. Too bad she turned out to be a patronizing cun--- shrew. Yeah, that was a good word for it.

He pushed himself up a little bit and held his hand up authoritatively. "I am reigning over my kingdom! For I am the dark and evil overlord, Chondrysith!! All shall tremble when they hear my name! Especially those who ruin my naps!"

Ask a stupid question, get a stupid answer.

"And why are you lounging under my designated sleepin' space!?" His tone was utterly ridiculous at this point. She'd be a fool to take him seriously.

She should have expected that the guy wouldn't give her a straight answer. Instead he rambled on ridiculously and AJ did all she could not to roll her eyes at him. She set her sights upon the words on the page of her book again, in an attempt to ignore him. So, he'd been napping...it's not like she'd really done anything to disturb him. She was quiet enough, he was the loud one.

"I'm challenging the dark and evil overlord," she said with a shrug, begging in her mind for him to stop talking to her.

Unfortunately, the mind begging did nothing. So long as she kept responding and so obviously looked disturbed by his stupidity, he would keep going. The boy lived on the attention of others, whether it be good or bad.

So long as he got it.

"And who, may I ask, dares to challenge meee!?" Yeah, Oriel was on a roll down a steep hill with no end in sight. "By the way," he said in a normal-ish voice, "you know, in case you didn't get it, that was me trying to be friendly and askin' for your name. Congratulations!" He applauded lightly. "Not many people find this dark overlord in such a good mood. You should count your blessings!"

AJ wasn't exactly sure what to make of him, but it didn't matter because she was not going to say much of anything. She'd been encouraged during the term to start trying to make friends because her trainers believed she'd made progress, but AJ was overall wary and she didn't trust herself not to hurt people and this guy...he was getting on her nerves and she had a pretty high tolerance level. She wasn't sure what it was about him.

She found this guy completely ridiculous and she kept reading the same sentence in her book over and over again because of him. "Creative," she mumbled, and was surprised to find that it actually did sound sarcastic. He seemed obnoxious. AJ was fairly good at reading people, especially since she didn't really socialize with them anymore. She merely observed them from afar. And he didn't seem like somebody she'd be friends with. "I'm AJ."

Awww....This girl was no fun. Pretty, but had a pretty sour and bland personality. Probably a book-worm. The unsociable type that had no face. Not like a Beauty and the Beast Belle, but more like a Twilight Bella. Hell, her name was more interesting than her personality.

"A-J....That supposed to stand for something? Or were your parents that droll?" Yeah, now he was getting board. The less she talked, the less friendly Oriel wanted to be and the more pissy came his answers. He asked for her name in such an entertaining way, the least she could do was return the favor by being a little bit more genial, otherwise, he wasn't going to bother giving her his. She could just know him as the Dark-Overlord.

AJ was becoming increasingly annoyed the more he spoke. "It stands for Amanda Joy. I'm named after my grandmother," she told him. He was starting to get even more obnoxious as time went on. "Look, I just sat down here to read. I wasn't trying to interrupt your nap and I'm not trying to be rude, but you're kind of offending me and that's not really how you start a conversation with someone..." She'd let her guard down. That was official and she wasn't even thinking about what this could result in.

The whole situation just made her upset because he was acting like she was a bore, but she was just trying to be a good person!

"Well you certainly aren't acting like your namesake," he commented with a dull tone, obviously bored.

But apparently he'd pushed the right button when she started getting all snappy. Now the fun could begin. "'Kind of' offending? Looks like I need to try harder, you should be greatly offended by now." Oriel brought a hand to his chin to "ponder". "Wonder if I need to work on my technique....?"

AJ merely stared at him and the lame joke he made about her name. She raised an eyebrow, wondering what exactly his goal was in this conversation. Part of her wanted to release some pheromones just to repel him from her, but she knew using her power would most likely end in disaster. Releasing pheromones was dangerous because they were chemicals and they altered people, taking something that was barely there and heightening it, revealing things about them. Sometimes the pheromones she released even manipulated people to feel how she was feeling.

She realized she'd been thinking too much and snapped out of it to look at the guy again who probably thought she was ridiculous. "Look, I don't want to cause any trouble and believe me, I can cause a lot of it, so maybe I should just find a new place to read..."
