Rebekah clutched the sticky note in her hand, crumpling it slightly, then smoothing it again. These walls were overwhelming. She had been proud of Bennett's newfound ability, but she hadn't been prepared for a place like this. It was one thing to have a special son. It was another to stand inside an entire school for special children.
She smoothed the note and reread the name she was seeking. Doctor Sean Neville. The thought of leaving Bennett here alone was overwhelming, almost crippling. It wasn't that she didn't think he could take care of himself. She just didn't think she could. Losing Eliza had been... No, she couldn't let herself think about it. She couldn't let words pin down her feelings because that made them more real than she could bear. She lost her wife. She wasn't about to lose her son.
It had taken a little while before she'd been able to find someone to tell her how to go about it. Who exactly was she supposed to talk to? What did a plain old numbers girl like herself do to connect in this wild place? She smiled a little. Girl. It had been a long time since that was accurate. Eliza called her that, told Beka that she was much younger at heart than she ever let herself admit. No. She had to stop thinking about Eliza.
After asking around and getting a good deal of odd looks from the kids, someone had finally been kind enough to write down Dr Neville's name for her. They hadn't gone as far as writing down directions to his office, instead simply gesturing vaguely at one hallway.
She wasn't even entirely sure what he was a doctor of, but supposedly he could help.
The name on the door jumped out at her and she realized she had walked past this same spot twice already without reading the name plate. Psychiatrist. That was an interesting choice for someone to call on for help.
She knocked lightly on the door, then added a harder rap for good measure. Well, this was it. She imagined just for a moment that Eliza was here with her, ready to take this step together. But she wasn't here. Time to plunge in to this strange and novel world alone.
