Thread Roulette: Pleasant (Sean, Estelle)

Estelle didn’t technically need to see Dr. Neville. She was already seeing Mr. Rhodes, and one therapist was quite enough. So whenever she went to talk to him, she usually steered clear of serious issues and opted to just talk to him about other things, like classes or things that she’d read that day. He was just so nice and he always seemed to know what Estelle was talking about or how she was feeling. She was also pretty sure Dr. Neville was one of those people who knew everything, somehow. And people like that always had the best stories. Eventually she’d stop being vaguely intimidated by him to ask about some. He’d probably seen some crazy things. And he also liked tea. This was a good thing in Estelle’s book.

So after class, she trotted over to his office, always feeling the momentary sense of awkwardness after realizing she didn’t quite have anything to say. As usual, she hoped she wasn’t interrupting anything important, but he did invite her, so Estelle figured if he was busy, she would leave. No problems.

Internal pep talk given, Estelle knocked on the door and waited the customary three seconds before opening it, a wide smile on her face. “Hullo Dr. Neville. How are you?”

Dr. Neville’s office smelled like tea, which always managed to make Estelle smile. She liked the smell of tea and she was rather fond of cookies, both of which Dr. Neville always seemed to have on hand. He was just so nice. And he always seemed to understand things. Which was also nice, since sometimes Estelle didn’t understand the things she was trying to say. So she didn’t need to say anything. She supposed that was what he’d gone to school for, but he was rather good at it.

She sat down in the comfortable chair and grinned, taking a cookie, “Thank you. I’m doing well, actually. My math grade is getting up, which is awesome. Also, I’m thinking about doing something in the drama club for the play we’re doing but I don’t really know what yet.” She took a bite out of the cookie, chewing slowly.

Finally, she swallowed. “I don’t have a whole lot to talk about today,” She confessed awkwardly, “But I do appreciate the company.” Which was true. Dr. Neville never made her feel like a silly teenager. Even if she was sometimes.
