"Kids don't pay attention to that stuff." Hart laughed. He certainly hadn't done so, and neither did Jessica. Nor did most of the students he'd taught. A few here and there, sure, but they were in the minority.

And then the door slammed open and shut and a loud voice was shouting from the entryway as his niece made an unexpected appearance. This had the advantage of distracting Ouch, who leapt from the sofa to go rub up against her ankles.

"Hey, Jess," Hart had to fake a cough to cover up the laughter bubbling up at the expression on her face. He had no idea what she had been about to say except that it was about his friend; he was long familiar with her nickname for her trainer.

"We still have...." He glanced at the tray of food, "A few chicken fingers left. Help yourself."

If she could stand to be in the same room as Mr. Campbell, of course.

"How was school?"

“Yeah,” Chase admitted. “But it still bugs him.” Granted, it made sense for James to be miffed when the kids forgot about the Doctor title. He’d worked hard to get it.

He reached forward for another chicken finger, thrilled with the idea of putting grease back into his grease-deprived body. He’d just have to wash his hands really well to avoid detection by his husband. “This was a great idea, y’know? Catching up, sports, food. Thanks, Hart.”

The yelling teenager distracted him from his brief moment of bliss. He recognized her voice, and despite the fact she was obviously upset over something (a boy, he guessed, simply by what was coming out of her mouth), he still raised a hand in greeting.

“Hey, Jessica. I was just visiting with your uncle. Hadn’t seen him in a while.” It was entirely the truth. As for the drama, well, he’d let Hart handle that. Jessica might have been his student, but she was Hart’s niece. That automatically made him more qualified to deal with boy troubles. Right?

Her face finally settled on a brilliant red as her eyes darted between the trainer she'd been about to complain about and her uncle whom she KNEW was doing his best not to laugh at her expense. Whyyyyy was he even there. So what if he hadn't hung out with Hart in a while, she needed to complain!

"Ahhhh..." no words. Just sound. Crap. She had to try again.

"Nah, it's cool." Smoother, but not exactly what she wanted to say. "I mean it's cool that you're here. Must be nice to have a life outside of work." Except that life was seriously screwing up her fantasies. It wasn't FAIR.

All she wanted in life (for the moment) was a Hotty McHotHAWT all to herself. She didn't want to share him. She didn't want him to be gay, and she absolutely didn't want him changing his name to match that of his husbands.

So there had been signs. Pictures. A wedding ring. All perfectly ignorable things. But the name. Having to call him Campbell or "C" now just rubbed her wrong. "What game are you watching?" Like she cared if it wasn't hockey. Shooting her Uncle another look, Jess arched her eyebrows at him and none-too-subtly jerked her head at Chase.

"No prob, man," Hart dismissed Chase's gratitude with an easy grin as they polished off the remains of the food; he supposed it was fortunate that Jessica seemed uninterested. Of course, she was probably just a wee bit distracted from any potential hunger by the presence of her trainer and crush.

He was so glad he wasn't a teenager anymore.

"Uhhh..." At her question his eyes darted to the screen, and he shrugged. "Sports casters talking about Tebow again." He had nothing against the quarterback, but he also didn't think he warranted the amount of gossip that swirled about him. Then again, perhaps the lack of scandal made him enough of an oddity people had to continuously comment on it.

"I wasn't expecting you by today," He admitted, shifting his feet and straightening slightly. "What's up? Need homework help?"

Chase noted the scarlet look on Jessica’s face, but he didn’t point it out. He knew how the teenagers were. Pointing it out would just make it a hundred times worse. The only kids he allowed himself to tease over blushing were Ginny and Nikki. His money was still on some kind of boy trouble, and he was not going to get involved. She was his student, not his daughter. (Or anything else, for that matter.)

“Yeah, it is,” he replied to the girl honestly. He liked having his life back. “Life’s finally calmed down enough to let me do things like see friends.” He nodded to Hart. “I think your uncle thought I was dead or something.” Which was a reasonable conclusion, being that he’d all but disappeared for a little bit there.

He leaned back into the sofa cushions, letting Hart deal with his niece. He wasn’t sure what he’d do, the day Nikki started noticing girls in a way that wasn’t really friendship. Or even if Ginny randomly announced she had a boyfriend one night while she was over. So... yeah. Hart was really better equipped to handle this.

"Homework help?" Distracted by Chase, Jess didn't follow the line that her Uncle had tossed her to save her from herself. Realization dawned just a moment too late and she snagged for it. "YES. There's this thing... in my class.. that. I need help." Crap.

Jessica winced visibly at her own clumsy efforts to get cover her clear fluster over Unk's friend.

"I'm, I'm glad you have your life back." Grudgingly towards Chase. She was glad to see him more often again, but she hated that his getting his life back had included taking the name Campbelle. It wasn't fair. It wasn't right. She didn't care that he liked boys, except that he ONLY liked boys and was married.

Stupid ring.

"Unk. I uh, I'm gonna go get a drink." Moving with a jerky kind of speed into the kitchen, the two men could hear the banging of the cabinets and the open-close of the refrigerator as she moved about. All the while she was muttering under her breath about how stupid she'd been, and what an ass Mr. James Campbelle was, taking perfectly sexy creatures away from the rest of the public. There were the same sentiments she had whenever she discovered a particular movie star she liked was seeing someone else.

"Still can't believe you're alive," Hart agreed, though he was only teasing. He was sure that if the other man thought whatever misadventure had resulted in his injury was life threatening he would have swallowed his pride and actually called the police.

After all, there wasn't any reason for him not to.

As Jessica retreated into the kitchen he called after her, "Hey, since you're up already will you see if there's any Pepsi left?"

Then, after a moment, he added, "Ouch is on my bed if you want to go say hi."

That done he returned his attention to Chase. "So how are Jess's training sessions going, again?"
