Josef was at work, which was a convenience Hart had planned for. It wasn't that he disliked his roommate, and he knew he got along with Sloane, but it was awkward attempting to have a date with anyone else around.
He had put Ouch in the basement to keep the feline out of the way while he cleaned and also from getting under foot while he cooked. He had kept Sloane's food dislikes and allergies in mind, which meant none of his own favorites, unfortunately. They really didn't care for the same foods, it seemed.
So instead of onion and garlic-infused pastas he had baked salmon with couscous on the side. Dessert was a key lime pie he had bought; he wasn't talented with desserts.
True to his word, he had dragged out a (somewhat ratty) old tablecloth to spread across the table and dug up candles from somewhere. The candle holders needed some polishing, but between the cooking and vacuuming up cat hair he hadn't had time.
He had even attempted to dress more nicely than usual, in khakis and a polo shirt. He didn't think Sloane was the type to expect him to wear something fancier.
When the doorbell rang he nearly raced to fling the door open, smiling breathlessly at his date.
"Hey. Come in."
