When Sean had asked about borrowing some time to discuss something with Chase over the weekend, the trainer had worried at first. Of course, he’d said yes, but he’d worried. He’d sat through many talks with Sean since the M.S.A.D. drama had finally been put to bed, but he hadn’t needed that for a while now. Maybe someone had said something?

What was worse, he didn’t even have James to ask if he’d heard anything to that effect. His husband had gone out on a particularly tricky recruitment, leaving Chase to look after Nikki, and Ginny if she showed up. Well, whatever it was, he tried not to let it get to him too much.

They’d arranged a time on Saturday for Sean to come by. Niko was already entertained in the living room with a Harry Potter marathon and popcorn. Both Mirage and Milo seemed content to lay on the floor beside him, the cat batting a piece of escaped popcorn on the carpet.

Chase was flopped on the couch, half watching the movie, and half looking at hockey scores on his phone as he waited for Sean to show up. Whatever his friend needed to talk about, he was here for him.

For once, Sean had taken it upon himself to make a meeting with Chase for the purposes of discussion (as opposed to simply spending time together as friends) that had nothing to do with M.S.A.D. They had discussed that matters many times since the events two years ago (and farther back than that). Instead, the telepath had questions that were for his own sake, as opposed to the trainer’s.

He and Josh had baked cookies together the night before, simply because they could. Sean had bundled several into a Tupperware container, and took those under his arm with a fruit salad that he had made this morning. Fruit salads were better in the summer with the array of summer fruit, but he found people needed them more in the winter, precisely because less fruit was eaten. While he knew that his friend was a notoriously picky eater, one or the other, if not both, would surely appeal to him. Then it was off to the house that Chase shared with James.

Upon arriving, he parked his car and moved through the snow in the driveway and lawn to the front door. He was ready for winter to be finished, although it would be a while yet. He shifted the items into one hand and arm, and then raised the other to knock and announce his presence.

Though Chase was the tiniest bit anxious about the meeting, he was trying hard not to show it. That was surprisingly easy, being that Niko was completely absorbed in watching the movies, and the pets were more content to snuggle with him than with the trainer. So, he just busied himself with his phone, looking up every so often at the movies. He wasn’t as big a fan of them as James and Nikki were, but if they would keep his son occupied during the meeting, he was okay with it. As long as he wasn’t going wandering around outside without Mirage, the boy could do whatever he wanted.

He watched as Milo continued to wrestle and bat a piece of popcorn, smiling at the cat’s antics. James might have had a little fit if he was there, but he wasn’t, and Chase would ensure it was gone before his husband got home. He wasn’t about to interrupt Milo’s fun.

The knock caught his attention away from the cat, and he got to his feet. After jamming his phone back in his pocket, Chase crossed the cabin and opened the door for his friend, smiling in what he hoped was a calm manner. “Hi Sean. Come on in.” He gestured vaguely inside, waiting for Sean to come inside before closing the door behind him to stifle the arctic air trying to gain entrance as well. Stupid winter. “Nikki’s got Harry Potter going, so we have some time to talk about whatever you need to.”

Sean returned his younger friend’s smile. “Thank you,” he said, as he walked past Chase and crossed the threshold. As soon as he was inside the foyer, he went over to the wall, set down the container of fruit salad and the one which contained cookies, and then removed his boot covers, and then the shoes underneath them. The telepath had visited the Campbell residence enough times to do the entrance ritual on autopilot. As soon as he was clad only in socks, he picked up the treat containers.

“Which movie is he up to?” Sean had no personal interest in Harry Potter, since he had been in forties when the first book was published in the United States, and it wasn’t his cup of tea. However, Ryan’s long-term girlfriend was interested in it, as was Ginny Campbell, as were several students, and so he was more familiar than one might expect with the lore. He certainly knew how many movies existed.

He then asked, “Do you want to talk in the kitchen? This isn’t anything top secret, but I’d prefer that you were comfortable.”

Sean could make himself comfortable in most places, which was a plus for his career and his lifestyle. However, since he was imposing on his friend, he wanted Chase to be equally comfortable before they began.

“Also, I made these for you, so help yourself,” he added, holding out the two containers.

Chase was content to wait until the so called ritual was completed, used to it by this point. Even when James wasn’t around, everyone still adhered to it. Of course, that wouldn’t stop the trainer from roping Niko into doing a general tidy around the house before James got home. When he wasn’t around, neither were inclined to be as neat as usual.

“Uh...” Chase had to think for a moment. “He’s watched them all with James before, but I think he’s watching the third one right now. With Harry’s Godfather running around?” He wasn’t as versed in them as James and Niko, and even Ginny were, but he knew enough to follow along with the movies. Sort of. “I told him he could do whatever he wanted while you were over, and that’s what he chose.” He supposed it could be worse, really. “He’s got Mirage and Milo in there with him, too, so everyone’s entertained for a while.” Though he didn’t doubt that Milo would soon tire of his chase the popcorn game and slink over to see what the adults were doing.

“Sure, kitchen’s fine. Did you want anything to drink?” He turned to head into the kitchen, though paused when Sean spoke again. Anyone that knew Chase knew he had a wicked sweet tooth, so the grin he sported was unsurprising. “Thanks, Sean,” he said with a nod before taking the containers into the kitchen. Fruit he didn’t mind, but he had his eye on the cookies.

Sean nodded his understanding. “They’re a good diversion,” he remarked. Certainly more than enough to keep a child occupied for an afternoon. Movie marathons (and cartoons) had always worked with Ryan when he had been a child.

The telepath then followed Chase into the kitchen. He knew his way through the Campbell house, but it was better to follow than the rudely strut around as though he lived here.

“Coffee, please, if there’s any to be had.” Sean knew that James was a fellow caffeine aficionado and that Chase suffered from similar migraine problems due to the fact that he was a fellow psychic. Coffee tended to help, as did tea. “Or tea if there isn’t any coffee.”

If neither of those were available, then the telepath could always settle for water.

Once they were in the kitchen, he moved to the table to settle in and make himself comfortable. “You’re welcome. The cookies are actually somewhat healthy, so you can report to James that you’ve been eating better.”

That was an exaggeration, but there was underlying fact. The telepath and his partner had used substitutions to minimize the oil, sugar, and fat content of the cookies. Sean thought they tasted the same, and considering how many cookies he had eaten over the course of his lifetime, he considered himself something of an expert.

“Yeah, they are. I’m just glad he’s into them, because James and Ginny are too. Gives them something to bond over.” He was always worried about that. He had been able to bond so early with their son, given he’d been his trainer since his arrival at Hammel. But Nikki was doing well with James, and Ginny more or less adored him. Really, he didn’t need to worry as much as he did.

“Sure. I made some a little earlier. Should still be okay. If not, I can make more.” Though he wasn’t as much of an addict to the stuff as James was, he still liked it in the mornings. To kick start his day, if nothing else. (Everyone that knew Chase knew he was not a morning person.)

Chase went about grabbing down the mugs and filling them before bringing one over to Sean and settling in the chair across from him. “Hey, we’ve been doing pretty good so far. James taught Nikki how to help in the kitchen, and I’m... less of a disaster. I think.” He smiled and shook his head. “We just did pizza last night because we were both tired. But other than that, we’ve been good.” He didn’t feel like getting lectures from his husband upon his return.

After the blond trainer helped himself to a cookie, he looked expectantly at Sean. “So. What’s going on, and how can I help?”

Sean took the mug from Chase with a smile of gratitude, before reaching for sugar and cream to stir in. That was another area that he and James had in common – the requirement to sweeten their coffee. That made it easy to drink at the other man’s home, as opposed to at a purist’s. When he used to visit Josh in the City, the attorney always had to stock up on cream and sugar specifically for Sean, as opposed to keeping them in stock because they were staples. “I’m glad to hear that. It’s always nice to have a pattern of home life.”

The telepath sincerely believed that, and he was always happy when people for whom he cared were happy.

After taking a sip and finding it to his liking, he turned his full attention to the younger man.

“Josh and I want to foster,” he explained. “Of my friends who have, you and James did so most recently. And your situation is closest to ours.”

In terms of being a committed same-sex couple and being meta. There were differences, of course. Chase and James were younger than Sean and Josh were. James had a biological daughter. Marital status might be a factor as well. However, they were close enough in situation to be a source of information.

“I was hoping you’d be willing to talk about the process a bit so we can prepare.” Reading, and even conversations with his attorney, weren’t quite the same.

Apart from his usual morning boost, and times of stress during work days, Chase really didn’t rely on coffee as much as his husband did. At times it worried him, and for a while he had even tried convincing James to switch to decaf for at least half of the day. The attempt hadn’t lasted long, and he hadn’t wanted to force it on James with his power. That was just unfair. Weekends were special, though. On weekends Chase didn’t mind having coffee throughout the morning, being that he could wake up a little slower. “Yeah, it is. It took a while, but I think we really settled into it.” Though even now he found himself and James both guilty of continuing to fuss over Nikki. Granted, given the events of his fostering, no one could likely blame them.

Chase reached for another cookie, not caring about the health content. They were amazing, and far better than anything he ever managed to produce. Minus the gingerbread he and Niko had tackled a few years ago. Sure, they hadn’t been pretty, but they’d tasted fine. Sort of. Under the copious amounts of icing.

The trainer couldn’t help the grin that spread when Sean finally told him what was going. This was going to be a much more pleasant conversation than any of the ones they had had about the M.S.A.D. aftermath. “Really? That’s great.” He knew Sean well, and he could safely say that he was well suited to being a parent. Josh, too. “I can tell you anything you need to know,” he assured. “It’s a hell of a process, but so worth it.” He smiled over his shoulder, watching Niko for a moment before looking back at Sean. “Here’s hoping you get a better social worker than we got stuck with in the beginning.” He remembered that all too well, the constant battles James had waged with them, and the endless frustrations that came from those battles. He had been somewhat serious in his threats about taking Nikki and running away to Canada. They had been better than his quiet desires to meet face to face with the social worker himself and tweak her behavior a little.

... There was probably a reason that James had been in charge of most of it. “Have you already started looking into the process?”

Sean smiled widely at the description of his friend’s life with their son. That was all he expected from James and Chase, and it comported with his observations whenever he visited the Campbell residence or interacted with the family at work or elsewhere. That was what he hoped to achieve with his own potential foster children.

“Really,” Sean confirmed with a single nod. It was quite a bit to undertake, and he was aware of that; he had done research into this for years before finally submitting the paperwork. He was proud of himself and Josh for going this far, and he hoped that they would find success with the endeavor. Even though there were very real concerns about prejudice: agism, homophobia, metaphobia, possible concerns about religion. Other concerns that weren’t related to prejudice, including their work schedules and their hobbies. If successful, it would be a lifestyle change.

“I appreciate any insight that you can give me,” the telepath added, quite sincere in that. Any insight at all that didn’t come from legal speculation was important to him.

He sipped his coffee, listening as Chase spoke. What he described with his social worker was precisely what he was concerned about. “We have our fingers crossed about our social worker, although we haven’t reached that stage yet. I don’t know the makeup of the agencies’ personnel, but you know what I’m concerned about.”

Josh was an attorney and he could make the legal arguments. Sean could appeal to decency and humanity, but telepathy made people uncomfortable. Their living arrangement made people uncomfortable; he and Josh were, noticeably, unmarried.

“We already put together and submitted the application, but we haven’t gotten farther than that yet.”

Despite the nerves and the slight panic that had accompanied the very notion of adopting Nikki in the beginning, Chase could honestly say now that his life had changed for the better. He had changed for the better. Being a father had never been something he’d seen in the cards for himself. Hell, he’d barely seen himself getting married. James had turned everything upside down, and he couldn’t complain. He loved his family dearly.

“That’s really great, Sean. I’m happy for you. James will be too.” Of course, James was more family orientated, and always had been. The trainer was sure his husband would be thrilled for the news. “Anything we can do for you information wise, or for Josh, just let us know.” Especially if they needed references. Chase had no problem providing either a professional or personal reference for Sean.

“Well, I’ll do what I can. James handled most of the technical details, and it was a while ago now. Once the adoption was final, I kind of kicked all of that out of my head.” Still, he could always go up to James’ desk in the small office and rummage around until he found what he needed for information. Technical details weren’t his strong suit, but he could certainly go over how the process felt.

“Oh, trust me, I know.” Chase scowled and set down his coffee mug. “Ours was terrible. I know James went to talk to Cobalt about it at some point. He said there was minor prejudice going on, but it would be hard to prove, even though Jamie kept records on everything.” More than once, Chase had wanted to talk to their social worker face to face. “The waiting seems to take forever, once the application is submitted. Have you looked in the course yet to get certified as fosters?” Most of it had been new to Chase, but James had had no problems with it.

“Thank you, truly,” Sean replied, offering his friend a smile. The need for community references was a possibility, The process had been explained to them when filing, and then during the certification course, but a good word couldn’t hurt. Better yet to come from friends and coworkers who had gone through the same process and passed with flying colors, if one could say that adoption was the underlying goal of the foster system. It wasn’t always, but it often was. “I’m sure we’ll take you up on the offer of information as time goes by.”

The telepath nodded sympathetically. He remembered the rants about the social worker when Niko had first come to stay with the Campbell family, and then as time passed and it became evident to everyone else that the boy would become a permanent member. Law rolling over for the thought or not. “We have the course under control, and admittedly, I’m not worried about that.”

Sean knew what he was doing in terms of actual parenting, and Josh had the legal aspects under control. It was, as Chase said, the waiting that would take the longest. In addition, he remained concerned about potential prejudices.

Shaking his head to himself, he said, “It isn’t even the homophobia I’m most concerned about. It’s our ages, and our politics.” While he and Josh were undoubtedly liberal, they were also considered radical in some circles, although non-violent. M.S.A.D. notwithstanding. “And you know how people react to the telepathy.”

Chase knew; people side-eyed him for his powers as well.

“It’s no problem, Sean. Really.” He knew his friend would do the same for him, if he hadn’t already. The whole process was more of a blur to him now that Nikki was officially adopted, so he had no idea who did or didn’t give references at the time. “James might be more help as far as facts are concerned, but I can try.” Anything he couldn’t remember or didn’t actually know, he’d just ask James and let Sean know later. He was planning to talk to him later anyway, whenever he called tonight from his recruitment assignment.

Chase had been somewhat serious when he’d proposed stealing away with Niko to Canada. The social worker they’d had had driven him crazy, let alone James who’d been the one to deal with her. Even her superior hadn’t been all that helpful. He’d never been more in James’ corner over semantics than he had in dealing with them. Oh well. It was over now. “The course made me a little nervous, but James was amazing.” It seemed that all of the trainer’s experiences with his nieces and nephews had also aided in his success. Plus his experience dealing with teenagers at Hammel. “How’s Josh feeling about it?” He remembered his own anxiety all too well. If Josh needed someone to talk to as well... well, Chase didn’t have a problem with that either.

As he listened, Chase took another cookie and chewed thoughtfully. True, Sean and Josh had complications, but if he and James had succeeded, he saw no reason as to why they couldn’t too. “I’m sure it’ll be okay.” As for the power prejudice, well, he knew that battle all too well. “I think anyone with psychic powers has that problem.” He remembered all too well the scrutiny his powers had been given. “Still, we did something right. We got Nikki.” And he honestly wouldn’t trade that for the world.

Sean offered his friend a smile. “I’m happy to talk to James too, but I thought to start with you.” Partially because of the fact that he and Chase had similar enough powers and experienced the same reactions from people for them. James’s power was benign and had less stigma attached. If the psychiatrist felt that he needed more information, he could easily get in touch with the Campbells; after all, he was a family friend.

“He’s doing fine, actually.” While his partner was prone to bouts of anxiety, it was Josh who had made this proposal. As such, his single-minded determination had taken over and was doing its part to mitigate the attorney’s tendency to worry. Josh still worried, of course, but he was coping well enough that Sean was proud of him. “Nervous but excited, and he’s put his mind to learning everything he must so that we can have as few problems as possible.”

The telepath reached for the platter of cookies, breaking in one of half before bringing the remaining half to his mouth. “I’m hopeful that it will be all right,” he replied, before eating the cookie and chewing thoughtfully. He was never one to speak with a full mouth. One he had swallowed, he added, “You know I’m not one to underestimate anti-psychic bias in the broader culture or how it impacted you.”

Sean was well-aware of the stigma against psychic powers, and he was certain that Chase had suffered from difficulty with the foster process as a result. That was what he hoped to avoid, although he had little doubt that he would encounter it regardless. “But the telepathy is what I have, and it’s what sets people on edge with me.”

He would prefer to answer for his politics.

“My hope is to have a match like you and James had with Niko.”

Chase grinned back. There had been a time he might have shied away from these kinds of questions, but right now he was content to answer. “Well, all right then.” He was just happy to help in any way he could. His life had changed so much since they had taken Nikki in, and he wouldn’t trade it for anything. Though he’d had a hard time picturing himself as a father at all when he and James had first started dating, well... he loved it.

“Good. I know it’s a big change, especially if you’ve never really considered kids before.” Hell, when he’d first met James’ hoards of nieces and nephews, he’d been petrified. Now? He was fine watching them on his own, and even got involved in their football and kickball games without hesitation. “It’s a big learning curve. I was lucky I could practice with Ginny.” Even if it was still weird to call her his step-daughter.

The trainer cocked his head and blinked as he thought about that. “True. But there’s still a difference between what we can do. There were a lot of questions about mind control and how I use it. I think people see it as more of a threat than telepathy. I mean, you can read their thoughts, but I could make them do things against their will.” He shrugged. “It doesn’t matter in the long run, I guess. We passed, and we got to adopt Niko.” It had been the best outcome he could have hoped for, and that made him smile as he glanced over to the living room, making sure Niko was still entertained.

“Yeah. I guess it helped we got to know Nikki a bit as a student before we took him in, so he was already a little bonded. Going in more blind would have been a little more terrifying.” Chase smiled and took another cookie. “We’ll be hoping for a match for you, too. You deserve it.” After a moment of thinking, he realized something. “If your foster child ever needs to talk to someone that’s gone through it, I can always talk to Nikki about it, if you want? It might help.” God knew he remembered how hard a time Niko had had when he’d first arrived to Hammel. Being so young, with no one his age to play with or do much of anything with, not to mention going through the system. He was surprised at his son’s resilience time and time again. “It can’t be easy for them, and anything we can do to help, we will.” He knew James would be on board with this, too.
