((OOC: In response to the letter Emma sent to Sean.))

The telepath had an easy day because he and Josh had managed to finish the yard work earlier that weekend. And while the other man was reading the paper in the den, Sean had gone to his study to sort through the mail which would only pile up further if he didn't attack it in a timely manner. Under an assortment of bills, forwarded mail from Josh's house, and this month's copy of The Progressive was a letter written in a familiar hand.

Smiling to himself, he opened it and read through. He made a note of that, and given the present date, he had a quick decision to make. And because Josh was living here as well now, he set the letter down and wandered out to find the other man, explaining the situation briefly before getting his lover's permission.

That established, he returned to his study and picked up the telephone, before dialing Emma's number.

Emma was jostling around in her room desperately trying to get her clothes squished into a suitcase - there were many of them, and many more pairs of shoes than Sean would care to know about - when the phone rang on her bedside table. Shooing Basket off the bed and closing the door, she pressed the receiver button.

"Hello-ey-lo!" She called, sitting on top of the suitcase to try and get it to shut properly. "Charles! I was scared you didn't get my letter and I'd have to sleep in a cardboard box or in the janitor's closet at school!" She grinned, pulling her hair back behind her ear. "It is all okay, right? I mean, I can find a motel if need be, I don't want to put you out."

Sean settled in the chair at his desk and set aside the letter while he waited for her to answer. When she did, he smiled to himself, because it was nice to hear her voice again. It was no secret that he was exceedingly fond of her. "Hello Emma."

He listened as she queried for permission, listing her alternative options, two of which were wholly unacceptable, and the third of which was unnecessary and expensive. "I certainly couldn't have you sleeping in Dylan's janitor's closet; it would be uncomfortable. Of course I don't mind. We'd be happy to have you."

He made a point of saying we, to let her know that Josh was aware and had agreed to her stay as well.

"I've missed your voice." Emma admitted quietly as she finally got the suitcase closed and moved around the room to check she had some other essentials packed. Mostly girl things that Sean wouldn't have, and a few little presents she'd bought.

"We? You mean Magneto is okay with this too?" She said cheerily, sealing up another bag and checking everything was ready to be loaded up. "I had to buy a sidecart for the bike to fit all my luggage in." She added with a smile, stretching out. "I've bought you both some little things, and I actually want to talk with you about something."

She hesitated then, and gave a wave to her dad out the window. "It's about my future, actually, but I'll talk more about it when I'm there."

"I've missed hearing yours as well," he replied, smiling to himself. He could hear the sounds in the background of furious packing: zippers being zipped and unzipped, hands pressing down on suitcases to make them close properly, items dropped around. It reminded him of the other month, when he had helped Josh move in, and those memories caused his smile to widen.

"He is," the telepath said. While he didn't mind her nickname for him, in fact it was a bit flattering, he had his doubts that Josh would be quite as appreciative. "And his name is Josh. You might want to start with that and then ease into nicknames with him." He chuckled at the mention of the side cart. "If it's the presents that are putting you out, you know you don't have to bring us anything."

Then the conversation turned more serious when she mentioned wanting to talk about her future. "And I would be happy to talk to you about anything you wish. We could make coffee and have a late night chat."

Emma grinned a bit when she heard Sean continue to talk, before shouldering the phone and lugging the various items down the stairs to the hallway, giving a coy wave to her little sister when she reached the bottom floor. "Can I call him Joshneto? Then finally drop the Josh?" She laughed, sitting at the bottom of the stairs.

"And it's actually the clothes and Trouser's glass pen that take up the room in the side cart." She shook her head and lent back. "Dad's also packed a few handy gadgets he thinks you might like. He sends his regards and asks you look after me." She rolled her eyes a bit. "The bike journey should take... 3 hours and eleven minutes according to Google Maps." She added.

"I'll be leaving about 9am, after breakfast." Emma nodded. "The last time we had coffee and a late night chat was after a bar brawl. It'd be nice to enjoy the company without a busted rib." She teased lightly. It was great to hear Sean again.

“Start with Josh,” the telepath replied, although he smiled to himself at her exuberance. He thought that Josh would take a liking to her when they met, and not merely because Josh took a liking to nearly everyone he met (when not bogged down in other baggage). He thought their personalities would complement each other. “Then after a while, and after you explain the history to him, you can give it a try.”

The telepath listened as he listed her cargo and then smiled at the mention of her father. “Thank him for me and tell him that I’ll be a perfectly responsible chaperone.” Not that he had any intention of looking over her shoulder; she was an adult now.

He took out a pen and paper and made a note of her estimated time of departure and how long the trip would take. That would land her squarely in the middle of the afternoon, and tomorrow was a work day. However, he did have control over his hours and he could shift his lunch break as needed. “Call me when you’re close. I can meet you at the house and help you unpack. Then I can give you a ride over to Hammel if you want to surprise everyone else.”

He was happy to do it.

He remembered their last chat over coffee vividly. He hadn’t been in too many bar brawls in recent years, and it had been quite the night. “I would agree. We could camp out on the porch as long as the weather stays nice; otherwise we’ll take it inside.”

"Alrightalright. Fine. I'll start with Josh, but it seems so formal." Emma laughed, pulling her hair back and tying it up. "I'll try and get him on side as soon as possible." She added honestly. "Dad's taught me how to bake chocolate cheesecake brownies, so I thought I could bribe Josh with food." She grinned, heading outside to check up on the bike.

"There's a mechanical foot massager, an alarm clock that makes a loud wailing noise when it's time to wake up and some other miscellaneous items I don't care to remember." Her dad HAD to just pack up a load of his inventions to be tested out on others. "Oh, he knows you will. He can't thank you enough for helping me graduate."

When Sean suggested a surprise visit back to Hammel, the blonde girl bounced eagerly. "Oh yes that would be amazing!" She yelped, dancing around her bike victoriously. "I'll pull over just before I get to Pilot Ridge and ring you to let you know. I'll probably stop off for a quick drink too." She mused. Long ride, too. She'd probably have a sore butt from all of that.

She smiled fondly then, and patted her beloved bike with a thoughtful sigh. "That'd be really great. I can't thank you enough Charles. You're amazing."

“I assure you that you can bribe him with food, although I expect you to save some for me as well.” There would not be chocolate cheesecake brownies under Sean’s roof unless he was able to eat at least one himself.

“A loud wailing noise, you say?” That would be unbearable. Then again, the psychiatrist was an early riser and he was good at waking with the alarm, if not before. As a favor to her father, they could try it one morning, perhaps. The foot massager sounded far more tolerable. “He needn’t thank me, I hope he knows. I wanted you to graduate. As nice as it was to have you around, there was no reason for you to suffer the same fate as Vincent.”

She was no longer a student, and Vincent’s academic troubles were hardly a secret. That the faculty expected him to never graduate also wasn’t a secret.

He smiled, hearing the exuberance in her voice. “Then that’s our plan. As soon as I get your call I’ll drive home and we’ll make quick work of the rest of it. I won’t tell anyone that you’re coming, but I’m sure the other faculty will be happy to see you.”

He paused briefly and then said. “It’s all in a day’s work for the resident telepath, but you can thank me by arriving safely.”

"Of course I would. It'd be pretty rude to bake brownies and not offer you any." Emma smiled, looking up into the evening sky with excitement in her eyes.

She nodded mutely at the alarm clock and facepalmed. "Don't worry, I can always give it to Verax, he needs the extra boost to get out of bed." She chuckled. "He still feels like you're the one who looked after me when I first got to Hammel." Which was true, she'd sought solace in Sean's office while she talked about her mother. "Vinny still failing school? Do you want me to have a word with him? I'll be sure to keep sentences short." She laughed.

"Alright, I'll look forward to surprising everyone. James knows I'm coming back, I sent him a letter, did the same for Vincent. But no one else has been told." She paused then, and frowned a bit. "I think Morgan could do with the cheering up, right?"

But then her father turned and said something about dinner from the porch, and she gave a thumbs up. "I'll do my best. Listen, I have to go have a big family dinner with my dad and sister now. Apparently they want to treat this like I'm going away forever." Another laugh. "So I'll call you when I first leave and when I'm close to Pilot Ridge, okay Charles? And send my love to Magn-... Josh and that I'll look forward to meeting him."

“Good. In that case, I look forward to having some.” Which he did. It was so easy to win him over with the promise of baked goods.

“You could try that. If nothing else, his apartment could use the decoration.” Which was undoubtedly true, although Sean hadn’t taken a trip out to his apartment; he had no reason to do so. His expression softened as the topic turned from Vincent to Emma’s early days at Hammel. He remembered vividly the many conversations in his office, discussing her mother and her family. “That’s kind of him, but you’re the one who got through. I was merely on the sidelines.” And then it was back to Vincent. “You’re welcome to try. He has an internship now; you’ll hear all about it, I’m sure.” Vincent’s internship was supper conversation at their home now.

“I’m sure James will be happy to see you.” Perhaps not as happy as Sean would be, but Emma had been one of his protégés and thus he was exceedingly fond of her. Just as Morgan had been, and he sobered somewhat at the mention of the young man. “Yes, he could do with some cheering up. I think he would appreciate a visit.” Not seeing her, not anymore, but a visit.

“Give your family my regards and enjoy your supper,” he wished her pleasantly. “I’ll see you tomorrow, and I’ll pass that along to Josh. Have a good night.”

With that, he hung up the phone and smiled to himself, before he went about finishing with the mail.
