Mayu stared at the words on the pages, her eyes scanning over them quickly. No, this wasn't possible to exist. She was sure that someone would have mentioned it. Telepathic bonds were not possible. Fairy Tales of normal humans. Yet everything this book said made sense. It explained it all like it could be true, yet she wouldn't know unless she asked would she? May closed the book with a snap and headed to her mentor's office, still reeling from the idiocy of the book she knew couldn't be true.

If wishes were fishes...

She knocked softly on the door to her mentor's office before peeking her head in. "Mr. Neville? I have a question for you.." May smiled softly, walking in at the affirmative and raised the book to eye level. Maybe it was very stupid to hope it might be true, but how did anyone ever find out things if they never asked? "Mr. Neville, can telepaths create bonds between themselves and another person? I know about gestalt pairs but what about the rest of us?"

Alright, now she felt too self-conscious and stupid for thinking it might be true. No way could minds merge without someone becoming destroyed. May pushed her bangs back in front of her eyes, pushing the book back into her purse before he got the chance to grab it. "It sounds stupid when I say it out loud.." she muttered, glancing up through her hair to look at the teacher. Maybe this wasn't such a grand idea after all...

One aspect of mentoring students and making himself an available resource was that Sean could never say for certain when a student would have need of him. As such, he kept an open-door policy, with his office unlocked and available to any student who needed him during the ten hours he remained at work every day; the only exceptions were when he was not in his office or when he was in a session with someone. Students knew that they could come at their leisure and were welcome inside so long as his door was ajar.

He wasn’t surprised when Mayu arrived at his office that day, interrupting the paperwork that he’d been drafting for the staff meeting later that afternoon. As one of the few telepathic students currently enrolled, he had made it his mission to develop a relationship with her, so she had someone to go to for advice beyond her trainer; he’d been lucky that Robert had been a telepath, but most trainers weren’t, and telepaths had special needs.

The reason for her visit, however, was surprising. That wasn’t a question that came up often, certainly not with anyone whose powers were as unrefined as Mayu’s, given her age. “It depends on your definition of a bond, but yes, it’s possible. But it also isn’t anything like a gestalt pair.”

May sat down on the edge of a chair, keeping her legs crossed and hands folded in her lap. A look of pure innocence if anyone ever bothered. "I'm fully aware how 'unrefined' my power is.. But that doesn't matter in the bonds, does it? Can you please explain to me how it would work?" she was quiet, and trying to be as subtle as she could. It was a shock to her for this book to be possibly true, and even more so that is would be different then the gestalt links.

With a tiny smile she leaned down to dig into her bag for the little black book that held her entire life. She set it down in her lap, pen in hand for whatever her mentor had in mind to tell her. Or think about around her. It was still hard for her to control exactly what she was picking up from people around her. Mayu looked up again through her bangs, eyes scanning the man in front of her. "I'm only asking to know, sir. I found a book in the library with speculations, so I figured I'd come ask my mentor for information?"

This was a complicated matter to explain, as any intimate matter was. And a telepathic bond was the height of intimacy, because it involved the connection of two minds, peeling away the other clumsy layers that interfered with most aspects of life. “It would because you wouldn’t be able to maintain one; like everything else, a bond is work. But your mind and someone else’s mind would sync, letting you know what they were thinking from longer distances and making it easier to read their mind than to reason someone else’s.” That was the simple answer.

The psychiatrist would never chastise someone for the pursuit of knowledge, unless the pursuit was in violation of someone else’s privacy. He couldn’t fault her for being curious about the topic, since it did relate to her powers and she was of an inquisitive age and temperament. The book she mentioned sounded new, as he couldn’t recall one immediately on the subject; then again, he also wasn’t Eli Morrison. “What book had you been reading?” He wanted to make sure that she was receiving accurate information. That wasn’t always the case, given the sheer amount of speculation that movies and literature attached to telepathy. As a result, he also tried to do damage control after media influence.

Mayu wrote down the words he said in a neat black-like handwriting, makes short notes to the margins for future reference. She didn't look at her mentor as he spoke; really didn't need to as the words he spoke flowed from her brain and to the paper. No stops in between so she could absorb it. Perhaps that explained a lot of what her problem was with Telepathy; she just never soaked up information like the others did. In fact Mayu was known to do the exact opposite which is one of the many reasons she had to write everything down. However when she paused to read over her work (creating an awkward silence in the office) Mayu noticed that he had asked about the book.

You would have thought someone like him would know every book of telepathy there was; fiction or not. "It's called Specialis Vinculum." Mayu replied with a soft smile, pulling out a thick bound book with golden words on the worn leather. There was a slip of paper marking it as new since no one seemed to have labeled it past a call number on the side. "The title and chapter names are in latin.. So I'm not sure what the real title is, I found it in the stacks.." She looked nervous momentarily as she set it on his desk, thinking that she must have done something wrong. It was hard to know if students were really allowed in the stacks, but she always went anyway.

It was common enough for young telepaths to do research on their own about their powers. Since telepathy was a mental ability, psychics tended to want to read as a means of discovery, rather than relying on hands-on experimentation. When Sean had been a student, he’d spent many hours in the library reading, but as he’d grown up, he’d gotten around to writing articles himself. The library was Eli’s domain now, and he didn’t interfere with the book orders.

It had been years since Sean had needed to use Latin outside of the basic medical applications; however, he had taken it throughout elementary school, and then in middle and high school back when Latin had been a suggested course in addition to the usual “foreign language” requirement. He knew the rough translation of the phrase Specialis Vincululm – special or secret bonds – and he was vaguely familiar with that book. It had been largely discredited. Then again, many books on psychic powers had been discredited with the advent of meta-human studies replacing metaphysical theory. “Special Bonds,” Sean informed her. While she hadn’t quite asked the question, her statement implied she wanted an answer if one was available.

The psychiatrist reached for the book and opened it, glancing at the chapter index briefly. “I wouldn’t take too much away from this book, Mayu. Although it looks like one, it isn’t an authority.” The adage about not judging a book by its cover applied in this situation. “There are other better books out there, with more accurate information. Real experiences are incorporated rather than armchair theories.” Shutting the book, he handed it back to her.
