[/b]The BasicsName: Orin Annabel Jewell
Nicknames: Rin. She hates her middle name and doesn’t like to say it.
Age: Sixteen (April 23, 1997)
Orientation: Unsure
Desired Rank/Job: New Transfer Student, Junior
Powers: Ink Fingers
Each finger produces a different ink-related medium except for her thumbs, which act as ink erasers. Her left forefinger produces standard ink (she’s left-handed). Each of her seven other fingers produces one of each: henna, marker ink, and different types of paint. Black is the standard color that they create, though if she tries hard and expends more energy she can produce ink of different colors. While it’s harder to do this, sometimes she has the energy to produce paint to put on a palette or into a pen and use it from there.
[li]Her hands are constantly dry, and it’s worse in the winter. She doesn’t like to put lotion on lest it mix with the ink.[/li][li]Too much use of her power leads to pain and stiffness in her fingers.[/li][li]Though she’s getting better at controlling when her power manifests, sometimes it will flare up at inopportune moments and get ink all over whatever she’s touching at the time.[/li][/ul]

General Appearance: Orin is a slender, slightly tall girl with a subtle hourglass shape. Her soft round face sometimes makes people think she's younger than she is, though she usually wears a bit of makeup to nudge people away from this assumption. Her hair is long and wavy (unless she styles it), falling straight to the middle of her back. It's fairly fluffy, especially on humid days. She has fairly dramatic mannerisms and facial expressions, though she can tone it down when she needs to.
Her style is fairly typical for a feminine high school girl: skinny jeans and calf-height boots, layered tank tops, short skirts over tights. There will be times when she wears something notably more dramatic - usually in the days after she sees an outfit she likes and buys it. In general she doesn't like to wear sleeves that go up to her wrists, large cowls, or anything else that could get in the way of her drawing or end up with ink spattered all over it.
Personality: Orin was raised in a wealthy dysfunctional family. This taught her two lessons which inform most of her approach to the world. The first is that she is entitled. Rin is used to getting what she wants when she wants it, and isn't used to hearing "no." This makes her a bit of a brat: if someone can't or doesn't want to give her something she wants, she will keep pushing in some way, trying to get it through manipulation of sheer pressure. The second lesson she learned is how to manipulate people and keep up appearances. She first learned how to do this in order to hide what was going on at home, but extends this lesson to other aspects of self. She's good at putting up an angelic appearance, even if she doesn't like somebody and is actually being a bitch to them behind their back. This leads to her being generally likable, especially to those not in on her manipulative tendencies. She's very good at reading and manipulating people, subtly influencing the social aspects of someone's life to get what she wants.
Rin has an authentically kind and nurturing side to those who do get close to her. Those are the people she wouldn't manipulate or use, and would do most anything for them. However, given the lack of authentic connection throughout her life - Rin doesn't let down the mask with many people - she's extremely possessive of those she does connect with, and becomes easily jealous. If she senses that other people have "replaced" her in their life or are simply taking up "too much" of their time, she will find ways to lash out. There's a lot of insecurity that she masks behind her angelic demeanor and manipulative ways, but she never lets people see it.

Strengths:
Social manipulation: Being raised in a family that cared a lot about appearances and had a lot of unrest to hide, she's good at keeping up angelic appearances and socially manipulating people to whatever ends she wants. She’s also good at masking what she really feels.
Visual art: She’s been passionate about this from a young age, in almost any form. She’s ended up doing ink drawing and painting more just because that’s the power that manifested, so it’s the most convenient for her. She also does a fair amount of pencil sketching.
Dextrous hands: Because she often paints directly with her fingers, they are quite strong and nimble.
Finding information on people: In part due to her manipulative tendencies – it’s easier to get people to do what you want if you have dirt on them – but more due to her ongoing quest to find out more about her brother and (to a lesser degree) biological parents. She’s become good at searching for information on people over the years.
Weaknesses:
Being told “No”: She’s used to getting what she wants, having been raised in an upper-class family. When she doesn’t, she takes it very, very badly.
Possessiveness: She holds the people close to her very, very close. It undercuts her confidence a lot to feel like she’s being replaced, or when someone close to her starts spending more time with another person than they do her.
Insecurity: Ultimately, the angelic mask she puts on, as well as her manipulative ways, are a way of hiding deep insecurity about her own value. The mask just makes it worse, making her wonder if anyone would really like her if they saw her for who she was, but she’s terrified to take it off in case they don’t.
Oriel: She could be convinced to do almost anything if it meant seeing her brother again.
Fears: Rejection, and never finding Oriel.
Secret: She resents her adoptive parents for separating her from her brother.
She likes her father's money more than she likes her father. She doesn't think that much more highly of her mother.
Because she doesn't know her biological parents, she doesn't know much about her descent. She and Oriel are twins, though they look fairly different, which makes her wonder.

History
Orin doesn't know where she was born or who her biological parents are, but she was in the U.S. foster system until she was 5 years old. Orin Vanguard and her twin brother Oriel Vanguard took care of each other, defending each other from anyone who meant them harm. At five years old the Jewell couple - a man and woman who wanted a child but couldn't conceive - started looking at the two of them. They ended up only adopting Orin, changing her last name to Jewell to symbolize her introduction into the family.
She was immediately introduced to a life of relative luxury. However, it meant little to her if she couldn't share it with her brother. All questions she asked about his whereabouts were evaded, and she was left more and more frustrated as the days went on. Her heart shattered the day she finally realized that the two of them were really separated. She developed resentment for her parents that she never really got over, and started looking for information on her own, since any conversation with them didn't reveal much.
Over time Orin got used to her new life, though her desire to learn more about Oriel persisted and she kept searching. For a few years the three of them were the image of the idyllic American family - mom and dad with their young daughter, nice houses with picket fences, six-figure incomes. However, that began to change as Agnes and Matthew began arguing. Orin would have to use headphones to block out the sound of their shouting some nights, and they became icy towards each other at best during the day. The tension could be cut with a knife, and Rin used any excuse to get out of the house.
A few weeks after it started, the family prepared for a move to England. Orin was a bit young to understand the family politics that had occurred, but Matthew wanted to move to Europe (in part for his job) while Agnes didn't want to, and things had been falling apart between them for a year or so. The three of them moved to a sizable house in England when Orin was 8 years old, Rin feeling awkward and out of place there. She quickly learned to hide the difficulties she had at home, though still had trouble making friends and had a mild problem with teasing.
Their lives proceeded like that for a while, Orin feeling out of place at school but still looking for any excuse to be away from home. She developed a wide, shallow social base, frequently spending nights at the houses of friends or acquaintances. Art was another escape from her dysfunctional home life, constantly carrying a sketchbook around and using a variety of mediums to express or distract herself from her emotions.
The arguing between her parents escalated until one night (when Orin was 12) the tension broke out into violence. The two started throwing things at each other. Orin heard the crashes and called the police, terrified. When she let go of the phone she realized she had left smears of multicolored ink all over it. This scared her even more. She curled up in her room until the cops arrived. While they dismissed the event itself as a harmless domestic dispute, they also recognized that the ink on the phone was Orin's power manifesting. That night they talked to all of them, informing them that Orin was meta-human and would be taken to Kocher for training as soon as possible. Her parents were passingly familiar with the existence of meta-humans but never thought much of it, and tentatively placed their trust in the government and the institution to take good care of their daughter.
Orin was overjoyed to be leaving home and rooming in the dorms, where she could live most of her life outside of the confines of her dysfunctional household. She got along a bit better with people there, partially because of her ability to put up an agreeable mask. Her ability to hide familial unrest expanded into a general ability to put on a mask and manipulate people, and she was a master at it. She rose the ranks of popularity fairly quickly. Not only was she good at making people like her, she had money, and lots of people liked that.
Her parents stayed together in her first year at Kocher, but in her second they went through a messy divorce. A heated custody battle ensued. Orin was ambivalent about the whole thing - she disliked both of them for various reasons, her father more, but mostly just didn't want them to spend all their money on the legal procedure. Still, it was stressful, and she lashed out a bit more at school to cover the anxiety and insecurity she felt. The result was her father having primary custody of Orin, and Agnes (who had visitation rights) moved back to the U.S.
Orin did fairly well at school for a few years, enjoying her social and financial status at Kocher while trying to hide the insecurity she felt. A few months before her 16th birthday, her relentless Internet search for Oriel finally yielded something: he was listed as a student in the Hammel Institute. Overjoyed to finally find something about him, she started on the work of convincing her father to let her transfer to Hammel. He was reluctant - in part due to fear of losing primary custody - and at first gave a solid "No." However, she kept working at convincing him, and he eventually relented. After her sophomore year at Kocher wrapped up, she prepared for her transfer to Hammel for her junior year.
At the beginning of the 2013 school year, Orin moved to Pilot Ridge, staying in a hotel until she got her room in the dorms. Her mother did indeed try to change custody arrangements for Orin. She doesn't really care that much this time, though. She's eager to see a new country, and burns to see her brother again.
