Take What you Love (Oriel)

[Carter Chevalier]

Carter rarely bothered to answer the door to their dorm room. He was usually busy, or not even there. Or perhaps he just didn't care for visitors. But the boy was in the kitchen procuring himself some coffee when something particularly strange happened. Something odd.

Usually when they had visitors, they knocked.

But instead, the door itself opened and a certain someone - the jealous one, as Carter remembered him - just breezed right in, towards Luxanna's room. Standing at the counter, Carter just watched, knowing the room was empty.

"What's the matter?" He said aloud, "Can't find your princess?" He turned his eyes down to the mug before him, idly stirring the darkened liquid about with a spoon. He even feigned a gasp; "You've lost her!" Feigned shock! The horror! The sarcasm; "Shall I call the guard?"

What to do what to do? Oriel needed hugs. Like really needed them. And Phoenix was off hanging out with one of his new friends, which was perfectly fine and he wasn't jealous at all because obviously Oriel was the one who encouraged the boy to expand his social…somethings…in the first place and he had no reason to be needy and jealous at all.

But something unexpected had come up and…well…hugs were the best cure for it. And Luxanna Princess hugs were the best.

He let himself into the dorm, like he'd done so many times in the past(probably not as much as he's deluding himself into thinking though), and made a bee-line for the Princess' Chambers.

She wasn't there.

As he headed back to the main room, Oriel retracted his crappy cell-phone and proceeded to text…only to realize that a certain wannabe heartthrob was addressing him. Nope, no texting in front of this guy(it'd take him forever just to write one).

"You know, just because you're blonde doesn't mean you have to act like an idiot." He pressed the speed-dial #1 instead and put the phone to his ear.

Carter spied the phone in his hands, raising an eyebrow in mild curiosity at the shear age of the device.

"You're right," He conceded, glancing back down at his cup. "Calling her princess is the mark of an idiot."

He even chuckled to himself, amused by the nature of the conversation already. Ah, the jealous one did have such a bite to him - though the rumours of his relationship development had to make the blonde wonder if he'd been tamed.

That's what relationships called for, after all. "Don't you have a lover to occupy your time with?" He asked, curling his fingers around the handle and bringing the mug to his lips. But before he dared to take a sip, he continued; "Must you bother mine?"

Oriel snickered, he himself keyed up from the retort from this Aryan WASP. "Your tiara envy is really sad, my friend." He listened as the rings went off on the other side of the phone. "Though, out of curiosity, is it simply the royal title that you're jealous of or the complete lack of male genitalia?"

Nope, Oriel still didn't like this guy, especially how he continued to use his superficial interest in Lux as ammunition as if it were creative. While his presumptuousness still grated on him, Oriel'd be damned if he took the bait like he did during their last encounter.

"Contrary to popular belief, I don't own him." Oriel hung up the phone. There was no answer. Not exactly the best for his nerves, but Oriel could deal. He just had to find something else to do. Oriel lifted his head, stuffing the phone back into his back pocket, and turned to the yippy albino. "He is allowed to have other friends." He ignored the other comment.

"If you'd care to look at mine you need only ask." Carter replied simply. He knew it was only a matter of time before his genitalia would be the subject of conversation. "You don't even need to buy me dinner first."

Not that he could.

The news wasn't surprising. Nor was the way he ignored the Chevalier's latter comment. "And how did you convince someone to be your layover?" He asked, sounding genuinely curious. "Until you confess your love to luxanna, of course."

"One of these days, you're going to realize the world does not care about your sack of diamonds, no matter how much you want to show 'em off." Clearly this guerro was not only vain, but an exhibitionist.

Oriel helped himself to the couch, positioning himself to face his adversary. "Answer me this first, why are you so fascinated by my love life? Is it because your own is at an unfortunate standstill?"

"A fair portion of the world would disagree with you." Carter pointed out.

The fact spoke for itself.

He quickly resisted the urge to grin at the lack of an answer; "Ah, she's a sensitive topic for you." Carter denoted aloud. Else he wouldn't shift about the question so poorly.

As always, the Chevalier wasted no time with his responses. "I merely wondered how one could fit a muzzle across that mouth of yours. Much less the rest of you." He replied with a slight shrug. Truthfully, that was what a relationship meant. Surely he - in the standing that he once had in this little community - would have known that already; "I find it's always a shame when one such as yourself succumbs to the concept of singular companionship."

"Wow, you do get around." Oriel couldn't dispute that. The Chevalier's 'private life' was no doubt as colorful as Oriel's. "Must've lured them in with actual diamonds. Because it certainly wasn't with your character."

Oriel, however, did not resist a smile as Carter made assumptions about Oriel's feeling. "Yeah, she is," he said calmly. "'swrong with that?"

There was a pause as Oriel considered, followed by a sharp sigh. "You know what? I just realized. It's pointless talking to you. We ain't never going to be friends. We ain't never going to understand each other."

"But since you asked so nicely, I guess I'll bless you with an answer. I love Luxanna. But not the same way I love Phoenix. And that's Ok with me. I'm happy with that. But trust me, I ain't missing out on nothing. We do have ourselves an open door policy." He grinned. "But you ain't invited."

"To each their own." Carter replied. His was likely far more colourful. And he couldn't be happier.

He tried his best not to grin so overtly at the statement about Luxanna; "You should ask yourself that."

Carter feigned curiosity when Oriel spoke about how they weren't going to be friends. He pursed his lips, as if accepting a new idea into his mentality. "No need to be so negative." He reassured, the corner of his mouth twitching into a grin; "Scarcer concepts have come to fruition."

What that might be, he didn't say.

And then he pressed his lips into a line. He tried his very best not to laugh. But as he glanced down to his cup, a small chuckle slipped out; "I'd hate to get between young love." That he'd even use the word was hilarious.

"Besides," Carter moved to take an enjoyable sip of his coffee, "I fucked him already."

Nonchalant. As ever.

"Already did." And Oriel was perfectly comfortable with them. "Though considering you incessant in-quire-ies I'm obliged to believe you think there is." If Carter didn't care one way or the other, then why go out of his way to question, or merely comment on, Oriel's motivations towards either Lux or Phoenix?

"Oh pray, do tell," Oriel returned. A hand came up to gently tap the side of his cheek while his eyebrows shot up in a worried shock. "I'm very eager to know what they are." Oriel shot his counterpart a daring glance, with narrowed eyes and a snakeish smile.

That Carter so clearly found the concept ridiculous only proved Oriel's first instincts about him.

Though, his next comment had Oriel staring at him for about three straight seconds….before he collapsed sideways onto the cushions, incapacitated by a flurry of giggles. "You…" he strained out in between breaths, "you really are in love with yourself…." He would continue, but the idea was just too absurd.

It was an outright lie. That he knew for a fact.

All Carter did was turn his head slightly. It wasn't a nod or a shake, just a simple movement. His smirk never faltered.

"I prefer to keep my secrets as they are." Carter raised his hand to the fact, dismissing the concept with a gentle wave. Let the curiosity simmer until the perfect moment found them.

Instincts about a Chevalier were never proven. They were speculated until the bitter end. It was why they were who they were. It was why Oriel always failed to get to him.

Carter instinctively chuckled alongside the boy's irrational giggling. He too found it funny in the most genuine way. He appeared as he was; unaffected by the nature of the boy's outburst. Because he was unaffected. He simply didn't care. Nor did he care to lie. "You love the word love." He replied simply, his eyebrows raising with a smile.

Because it wasn't a lie. It was a fact.

That actually brought out a laugh from Oriel. "Or maybe there just ain't nothing to tell?" Though Oriel doubted that was the truth.

This guy really, so obviously got on Oriel's nerves. Especially the way he always seemed to be looking down on him….no, Oriel surmised, he wasn't looking down on him or even laughing. Oriel wasn't even on this guy's radar as someone worthy of being looked down on. It was Carter's complete indifference that got to him.

It wasn't just because he had an interest in Lux.

Oriel propped himself up, peering over the back of the couch to leer at the would-be Jr. Nazi with a devilish grin. "Something wrong with that?" Sounded to Oriel like this guy had issues with the concept of love.

Well….Oriel hadn't been that much different not too long ago. But in his case it was because he failed to understand it. Or maybe refused to. He shrugged, looking away towards the door, hoping that Lux would miraculously return in the next few minutes. "I'm trying it on. See how it fits." Then a snigger before repeating something he'd said to Penelope a while back, though it came out as more of a mutter. "Hell, I'll try anything once."

Carter didn't care to respond with words. Rather, he raised his eyebrows curiously. Should he believe his own words, he mightn't have even bothered saying them.

Again he didn't strike the conversation with a response. The word was only an issue for those who let it become an issue. Truthfully, it sounded absurd coming from the other boy's mouth. But sanctioning his love life to the farce it likely was seemed too easy a shot.

It was cheap. Carter avoided cheap in every sense of the word.

"I doubt that." He replied with a shrug as he sipped from his cup again. This time he left the secluded area of the kitchen. He ventured into the common area where Oriel took his seat, opting to lean against the back of the couch. "You've never tried a Chevalier - and evidently - you never will."

Man, what was with this guy? Did he have some sort of brain malfunction that made him unable to speak unless it was the most annoyingly "profound" thing ever?

"Seriously, though," he pressed the issue like the idiot child he was. "Why say anything about my love life, why try to chide me about it, unless there was something, like a bad jock itch, you just had to say?" It still wasn't any of Carter's business, so why say anything at all, kind or unkind?

Oriel followed Carter with his eyes and an ever growing evil grin as the blonde made his way to the back of the couch. Hmph….stupid blonde. He'd be a hella lot hotter if he dyed it brown.

"That's my intention," he leered, cradling his head in his folded arms. "Though, even if I did, as skilled as I am, I still doubt I'd be able to get past that stick up your ass."

Again, Carter didn't bother to speak or answer. It said more about Oriel to push the issue than it did of Carter to just stand there and grin.

"Aren't you a paradox." Carter mused to himself. To say he'd try anything once, but never have the intention to try a Chevalier. It was an open contradiction - one he'd admit to enjoying. As for the latter comment, he chuckled to himself about it; "You wouldn't be a top with me."
