Once upon a time there was no indoor harnessed electricity. People still had to read books.

[Lucy Serrano-Blaise]

It wasn't Lucy's first encounter with the English Department's office when it came to extra school-based work. Nor would it likely be the last. Really, she should have learned from her past experiences instead of silently refusing to work on a joint paper was probably a bad call on her part.

This time, she wasn't even alone. Lucy had a partner to work with on the project. If it weren't for the fact that a certain Brit had explained (read: passive aggressively suggested) to her that dragging someone's grades down with her own dismal scores was bad, she likely wouldn't have been there. Still, she'd barely said a word to the blonde girl across the table from her. Why would she? All she had to do was pretend to be engaged until she was allowed to leave.

Once those lights flickered and suddenly cut, her eyes went wide.

She forgot to charge the 3DS.

The mild panic that crossed her features was short lived, as it always was when she remembered she was living with a human battery pack. A quick trip to Dani's and she'd be able to charge it up... Provided she didn't blow it up.

"Reckon a school this fucking choice would have a back up or something." The Australian mused, glancing up. She had no issues with the dark, really. But it was still annoying. She swung the book closed with a slam, throwing it down on the table. "And I reckon it means we can bail out."

Eloise wasn't a fan of group projects. She was even less of a fan of group essays. It was hard to write a paper with someone - especially if you had differing opinions or ideas. It was even harder to write a paper with someone who refused to do any work. Eloise knew that the work session had not been planned by her partner - she didn't need to be telepathic to figure that one out. But she still obliged, not surprised when her partner didn't participate in the work that still had to be done.

So Eloise just quietly wrote, knowing that her teacher would be able to tell the essay was entirely written by her, and wondering if that would hurt her own grade at all. It wasn't her problem if Lucy got a zero. Only once or twice had Eloise even looked up for her partner's input. That was all she needed.

What Eloise didn't need was a power outage, but that was what she received. It was still daylight, so it hadn't become completely dark in the office, but the lack of light was noticeable and still a nuisance. Eloise sighed, wondering what could possible cause the lights to go out, actually agreeing with Lucy that a school like this should probably have a back up. For god's sake, there were enough Electro and Ergokinetics that they should expect more power outages, and be able to deal with them. But a couple moments passed, and the lights remained off.

Lucy slammed her book shut and decided that the outage was a sign to leave - which could only make El laugh. "You do realize this is due tomorrow... and you haven't contributed a word," she said, trying to make sure her thick - accented partner knew what she was signing herself up for. Eloise was giving her a chance to sit back down and make a contribution, but she wouldn't be surprised if the offer was left without recognition.

The laugh this chick gave her made Lucy's eyebrows raise curiously. She feigned a relatively remote, almost dumb expression at the response she gave. Shit, what was her name again? Lucy had always been better with faces than she had been with names. Leaning back on a foot, she folded her arms across her chest and allowed the curiosity she felt to be evident in her eyes.

"Didn't know you were so keen to fail, bae." Lucy replied. Because really, anyone who knew anything about her - and many knew about Lucy Serrano - knew that she wasn't exactly the person one wanted on her team for a school-based project. Unless it involved art in any way. The warrior girl on her upper arm wore an identical grin to the ink manipulator; the amusement she felt as evident in her tattoos as it was on her lips. "Anyone'd think you were just stalling to get me to stick around. Bit of a sweet sentiment, I reckon."
