With no ability to cook, sandwiches are the best food choice.

Work had been long and hard and went she got home in the early afternoon all she wanted to do was heat up some leftovers and find herself in bed. Now she knew that Ike would need a walk before that but she was not prepared for coming home and finding her apartment building dark and having to use the small flashlight she had on her key chain to find her door and then enter. Well this was just great. Now she was afraid to even open her refrigerator for fear the cold would escape and her food would spoil. She checked her pantry as Ike nosed her hand. She had canned soup, canned vegetable, rice, and all manner of things that needed to be cooked, which with her electric stove was not looking to be an option. She found Ike's leash and got the dog to sit long enough for her to put it on. "Let's go find something to eat. Someone's bound to have power." She checked her wallet, she had cash so hopefully even if they didn't they'd let her pay with cash.

She changed into a pair of shorts and a comfortable tee shirt before putting on flip flops and venturing out with Ike. At least it was cool enough where no one was going to be too upset about loss of air conditioning. It was nice to be out in the sun again and out of the dark caverns of her apartment. She was slightly excited, maybe this would give her an excuse to burn a few of those candles that she had floating around her apartment. Maybe without power she could finally disconnect and read a few books she had piling on her coffee table. And this was a nice chance for Ike and her to take a stroll into downtown. Ike was getting big, but luckily he was also getting better at listening and he nosed a few people down the street but otherwise paid attention to Idalia and her commands to leave people alone. All the while Idalia was looking for some place with food that either had power or was still operating without. She knew generators were expensive and she was glad that the power outage had missed Burlington or at least that the generator at the station was well in working order.

She came upon Honest Abe's and with a smile noted that the door was propped open and people were eating both inside and at a few tables outside. "Alright," Idalia said her stomach rumbling. "Ike, sit. Good boy," she scratched his head and stooped to tie Ike to the base of a free table. She took out a water bottle and a small collapsible bowl and filled it with water. Ike started to lap up the water and Idalia patted his side. "I'll only be a minute," she told the dog and escaped for a moment inside to order a sandwich. It seemed this place was smart and making sure that their refrigerated products were being sold. Idalia got a cold cut ham and Swiss with a delicious looking salad and waited for her order to be placed. She glanced out the window at Ike who had taken to lounging on the ground, stretching his large body out over the sidewalk. He noticed her watching and his tail wagged and his ears perked. She mimed a kiss at him and the dog cocked his head. Ida chuckled to herself and listened for her number.
