The grand opening (Rayne)

"Me an' Jayson were working on it all afternoon, I bet you'll really like it," Katya insisted as she led Rayne by the hand to the closed door of the room they shared. She was practically bouncing up and down, excited to finally reveal the project she and Jay had finished. The thought that her roommate might not like it had barely even occurred to Katya, and had been easy enough to dismiss. Who didn't like twinkling lights, after all?

"Okay, three, two, one..." she counted down excitedly, before swinging the door open with a flourish. "Ta-da!"

Inside, strands of wire criss-crossed the ceiling like vines strung from tree to tree. Tin bulbs of light speckled the walls with orbs of color. The main light in the center of the ceiling was off, leaving the room dark but for the pinks and blues and greens dotting the wallpaper.

"So what do you think?" Katya asked, watching Rayne's face expectantly. From this angle, Kat couldn't help but notice with a fluttering in her stomach how the flecks of light reflected in the other girl's eyes. "Isn't it pretty?"

When Rayne got home from work she didn't really expect to be instantly grabbed by her roommate. Sure, by now she should be used to the fact that Katya had about as many ideas as she did. But it still always managed to catch the Russian by surprise whenever her curly haired friend would come bouncing in with yet another home improvement she completed (usually with the help of one of the boys).

Rayne knew there was a reason she kept the boys around. They were handy.

The Russian girl allowed herself to be led up to their shared room and chose not to comment on the fact Katya had roped Jayson into whatever 'it' was. She'd have words with Bluebird later.

As the door swung open, Rayne couldn't help but smile some at the criss-crossed strands on the ceiling. If it weren't for the fact there were various colors, Rayne might have been able to imagine that they were outside. However she reached in and carefully throwing on the light, frowning slightly when the effect was ruined by their slightly boring (though not for lack of trying) room.

"We should build a fairy house." She concluded, despite the fact she hadn't actually spoke yet. When she turned to her roommate there was a wide smile on her face. "We could put fabric on the wall. Replace the ceiling light with a paper lantern. Maybe we could convince all the boys to help us redecorate!" There was a small pause before she cocked her head to the side. "Oh. The lights are really pretty, Hedgehog. Good choice!"

Katya nodded along with Rayne's suggestions, smile growing to match her roommate's. Her chest swelled with pride as she took in the praise. The nickname was icing - Rayne had been calling her Hedgehog for years, but Kat had never gotten tired of it.

"I knew you'd like it!" she squealed, before striding into the center of the room. Arms out in front of her, index fingers and thumbs forming the rectangle of a frame through which she could picture Rayne's suggestions. "What would we use? Tulle? Silk? What about colors? I want pink and red on my side!"

Katya chattered a mile a minute as she imagined what their room could look like. When she'd hatched her plan, she'd only gotten as far as the lights. No surprise that Rayne would build on it, though, as many ideas she had herself. Kat could see it now - luxurious streams of fabric draped over the walls, the paper lantern casting juuust enough light, maybe even candles or incense to create a serene, almost romantic atmosphere. Perfect.

Rayne smiled at Katya quickly jumped in on the train of her idea, but unlike the other girl she remained in the doorway and looked over the room with an eye practiced in visualizing things. Mentally she draped fabrics over the walls and tried to visualize making an almost tent for the ceiling. They'd lose some space but it would definitely be a cool effect. "I think silk and satin with a bit of the soft tulle over top? Maybe to change up some of the shades. We could do deep red, rich pinks, and a bit of purple." She nodded some as if she already knew Katya would agree.

"We could even get a bright pink to kind of... Tent around your bed. Make it a bit of Moroccan meets Fantasy." Rayne nodded some more before grinning at her roommate. It was just like her to latch onto any idea she deemed 'fun' and try to expand on it. "Alright! We need paper and pencil! We need to write this all out so we don't forget." This, Rayne has decided was an important step in planning. If you didn't document the ideas you were far too likely to forget them.

Katya listened attentively, picturing the effect of the hypothetical decorations with a dreamy smile on her face. It would be like they were in a totally different room, a different house even. Right now Kat's side of the room looked pleasant enough, with photographs and paper cutout hearts tacked helter-skelter across the wall, but "Moroccan meets Fantasy," well, she liked the sound of that. She'd have to find another place for her photos, but that wouldn't be too hard, right?

"Oh, here!" At Rayne's words Katya leapt into action, hurrying to the backpack she'd thrown onto her bed after a day of classes at the university. Unzipping it, she reached in for a notebook - with a pink and green cartoon owl on the cover, of course - and pen which she then presented to her roommate. "We can use this one, don't want to forget anything!"
