The Basics
Name: Akira Riley Faulkner (His parents were a little spacky when it came to first names. For ALL their kids. Poor things.)
Nicknames: ‘Kira
Age: 15
Orientation: Completely unsure. He knows he's got feelings for his best friend. He just doesn't really know what they are.
Desired Rank/Job: Student
Powers: Animal Control – Yes, as Disney-esque as it sounds, ‘Kira can talk to and control animals. No, he’s not going to go Snow White on your ass. Hell, he doesn’t even like the control aspect. Communication, however, he does like. Except when he can’t quite figure out human communication again, but hey, he’s working on it. His ferret, Moxie (dubbed such by his older brother, not him) likes the communication aspect, too. If she had things her way, Kira would only talk to her.

General Appearance: Can you look at the picture? Please? Pretty please? No? You’re going to make me write out something you’re not even going to read? ... Fine.
Small and scrawny, ‘Kira is. Only just beginning to hit his growth spurt, he’s still at that awkward, gangly stage. Yes, he trips over his own feet, but this is a new development – he’s not naturally clumsy. He only stands at 5’ 6”, but he’s growing, and he’s a scrawny little thing. He’s still got a childish quality to him, but he’s beginning to mature up. It’s slow, but it’s coming.
He keeps his hair longer than most boys, and will sometimes braid a tiny section, just for fun. (His sister used to do it to him at home.) He doesn’t paint his nails, though his hands are often stained with paint from art, nor does he do the guyliner thing. He’s small, he’s cute, but he’s skittish. As for clothing, it’s mostly casual. Jeans, t-shirts, that sort of thing. He’s usually in a hoodie, because he lets his ferret, Moxie, come with him to class, if he thinks he can get away with it. If he’s on the grounds, chances are, she’s with him.
Personality: Shy. Introverted. Impossibly sweet. That sums up Akira.
... Oh. You wanted more detail. Dang.
For being the baby of his family, Akira doesn’t act like a spoiled brat. On the contrary, he often wishes he was invisible. His older brother, he’s the attention seeker. And his older sister lies somewhere in the middle. With strangers, Akira is likely to shy away, or simply go mute. If he can, he’ll escape, and go talk to Moxie. He deals a lot better with animals than with people.
Put him with his siblings, and you’ll find a fairly well adjusted fifteen year old boy. He’ll play video games with his brother, and reluctantly tattle if he thinks he really needs to. He’ll let his sister mess with his hair, or tell her exactly what her dog, Freya, is thinking, or wanting. (Unlike their brother, she doesn’t think he’s a freak. Just different.)
Put him with his friends, and he’s not nearly as shy as he is with strangers. He comes out of his shell, so to speak. He’s playful, upbeat, and actually, you know, talks. He’s a sweet kid, and unfailingly loyal when it comes to friends and family. Toru, his best friend, in particular. He’s known Toru for what feels like his entire life (and he probably has). He’s like a second, nicer brother, a mentor, and a best friend, all rolled into one, and ‘Kira is most relaxed around him. Even Moxie likes him, despite being possessive over her master.
If ‘Kira’s nervous, it’s easy to tell. Moxie will crawl out of his hoodie pocket and curl against his neck. He goes very quiet, and very still, and very few people can calm him down. It’s here his side effect tends to worsen. He’s usually holding a silent, mental conversation with Moxie, and when stressed, he tends to lose his human communication skills for longer. But that always come back. Eventually.

Any Other Important People:
- Moxie, his ferret. A hand-me-down pet from his older brother. He decided it was ‘too much work’ to take care of the little critter. Akira felt bad for her, and took her in as his own. She was the first animal he ever spoke to.
- Toru Edenbrooke – Akira’s best friend. They’ve been neighbours since before Akira could even walk, and best friends since they were kids. Sometimes he wishes Toru was his brother, instead of his biological brother (because, face it, Seta’s a real dick sometimes). It killed him when Toru was sent to a special school, even though they wrote letters and sent emails back and forth. When Akira found out that he could attend the same school, there was a lot of happy going on.
History
In Akira’s life, there have always been constants. He could always rely on his big brother to boss him around, and be a general pain in the ass. He knew he could always run to his older sister, and be reassured. Animals were another constant – he had pets in the house since he was in diapers. And Toru. Always Toru. Growing up, his next door neighbour, Toru Edenbrooke was his best friend. He was like a second brother, a tutor, a mentor, and Akira loved spending time with the older boy. Toru would help him study for math, play with him when his own siblings weren’t in the mood, or around.
So imagine the heartbreak when Akira was twelve, and his best friend told him the news. He was being sent away, to a special school. A school he couldn’t tell him about. Just that he was going away. Akira cried for days. His older brother told him to suck it up and get over it. His sister tried to reassure him. But he was upset until the first letter came. He didn’t feel so far away from Toru after that. However, there are some things a kid just needs his best friend for.
It started... strange. When his brother Seta was ten, he’d gotten it into his head he’d needed a pet. A ferret, to be specific. But as it turns out, ferrets are a lot of work to care for, and he honestly couldn’t be bothered. He dumped the little creature on his then seven year old brother. From the second Moxie changed hands, Akira was smitten with the little animal. He took care of her, with the help of his sister. Everything was normal between him and his pet, until he the year after Toru left for school.
He was lying on his bed, doing his homework. Moxie was sitting beside him, watching in a cute ferret-y way. He was talking to her as he worked, and then, he realized something. She was talking back. At first, he was considering it was just his imagination. He was a creative, artistic kid. Really, it was just his imagination. But then Moxie just looked at him and wanted to know why he’d stopped talking.
He’d picked up the ferret and raced down to his brother’s room, insisting she could talk. Seta had promptly kicked him out, calling him a freak. Of course he did. Everyone knew that animals didn’t talk. In his mind, Akira was just being a pest. So he tried his parents. They just sort of smiled and told him that it was a nice idea, and animals didn’t talk. And this freaked Akira out, just a little bit. What was going on, if animals didn’t talk? What was worse, he’d talk to Moxie, tell her she couldn’t possibly be talking to him. She just looked baffled. As far as she knew, humans couldn’t understand her. Which made Akira special. And freaked him out a lot more. And that’s when he learned about the side effects. After talking to Moxie, he’d find his communication skills shut down. This worried his parents, when he couldn’t seem to be able to talk to them. They took him to doctors, who found nothing wrong, and, out of desperation, a psychologist.
It was the psychologist that realized something was amiss. To Akira’s parents’ dismay, she requested them to bring both their son, and his pet, in. It might help her to diagnose just what was going on. When the young boy came in, it was fairly clear what was going on. They had an emerging meta-human on their hands.
The letter came just a week after that. Akira couldn’t believe it. Neither could his parents. Or his brother. His sister didn’t seem so bothered by it. A recruiter came not long after that, and explained to his family what was going on. The more they explained, the more Akira began to realize something. This was where Toru had gone! He recognized the name from the letters. He begged his parents to go. Not that they had much of a choice about it. While Akira didn’t seem a danger, there was always that potential. So, he was sent to Hammel Institute.
He’s spent two years here, working on sharpening his skills. He doesn’t fare well with cats – they talk to him, but they refuse to do what he wants them to. Moxie’s the easiest, because he’s known her the longest, and they have a bond. Whether he forces her or not, she’ll do anything he asks. He’s happier than he’s ever been at Hammel. For one, he’s reunited with his best friend once more. For another, he’s away from his bully of a big brother. And he’s finally with people like him.
